I pray this isn't just more political kabuki theater.

If scary Jerry is willing to do this and more cost cutting I would be willing to extend the tax hikes 5 years like he's asking. There would be 2 conditions: 1) Prop 13 is hands off, absolutely NO exceptions. 2) Carry out his promise of State Workers Pension Reform which will save us a bundle.

C'mon Mello Guy we need to talk.

Can it be the old time liberals like Kennedy and Brown are more conservative than modern republicans like Ahnold? Just the effort isn't good enough, with the state of the State, we need results not promises. I am withholding any hope till he can get it past the chuckle heads like Steinberg and Perez.

lol if he was more conservative there would be no talks of taxes, just cuts.

sort of like you hear from national republicans.

Brown is a leader and a man of character. hes going to do what he thinks is right, and hes going to try to do it so that the burden isnt just pushed off one group

Get back to me when he decides to cut his ties with the unions and decides to eviscerate the public pensions.

Until then, he is still a loony left-wing liberal whacko.

Jerry Brown still thinks it's the 1970s, and so do his apologists here, from the looks of at least one avatar.

This is pretty much a typical liberal proposal for addressing a deficit. The liberal plan for addressing budget deficits always involves cuts to ineffective programs and increases in taxes to plug budget gaps. That's the only way to actually balance a budget, and a balanced budget is a liberal ideal.

California will never balance it's budget as long as 1) The State Government pursues policies that drive business out of California. 2) Continue to spend approximately $10+ Billion dollars a year on illegal aliens.

Just keep telling yourself that. Until California realizes that states have to actually tax people, they're never going to get out of this hole.

Why do people think that more taxes is the only solution to a budget deficit problem? More taxes in California will just increase the exodus of jobs from the state. How are you going to make money from THAT?

Historically the more they take in, the more they spend.

A bunch are listed here. I don't know why you'd invest in their competition, without jobs people are leaving too.

I get that, if spending isn't cut and state workers pensions aren't re-negotiated, California will go bankrupt. They need to go back to 1990 and find all the pensions out there where workers, worked a ton of overtime in their last year, boosting their pensions artificially. Then re-set their pension payments to the contractual percentage of the last 5 years employment average wages not just the last single year. If they won't do that, let the state go bankrupt and the pensioners can file claims in Bankruptcy Court and take a pennies on the dollar payout.

This is a absolute prime example of why Jerry Brown NEEDS to eliminate these dopey Redevelopment agencies. That is the most asinine idea I have ever heard in my life. They will simply sit sideways on the bench. That works out to $3571 per bench to remove the back and turn them sideways. OMG!!!!!!!! Shut 'em down Jerry, shut 'em down!!

Here is what the foolish Democrats have done to many of America's metropolitian cities! This is what they often do when they foolishly tax and spend and drive the middle class out of the central business districts of the urban cities.

America's Beautiful, Horrible Decline courtesy of the foolish, tax and spend and very misguided liberal Democrats!

"Democrats have been running our inner-cities for the past 30 to 40 years, and blacks are still complaining about the same problems. More than $14 trillion dollars have been spent on poverty programs since Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty with little, if any, impact on poverty.

I don't know what to say. Most of this post is *gulp* reasonable. The only thing I will say is California's problems and solutions are not partisan. You have to match outflows with inflows. If a project cannot be objectively proven to work you have to cut it... especially if it is a $1.7 billion program in a STATE budget.
