You are one of a group of investors that are going to buy an island in the Pacific about the size of Ohio.

There exists some natural resources to sell on the world market and the land is fertile. There is no current population on the island. People need to be attracted to relocate to the new nation.

This will be an independent nation, but no political system has been decided upon yet. What sort of government would you set up, beginning with a blank slate? Why?

Basically you are talking about the development of vacant land in the middle of an ocean.

Chances are you are not going to lure many folks to live there however, I could see it being a viable resort enterprise.

If it did not fall under the rule of any existing country then you'd have to create your own. Something like the American constitution would probably be the best.

Since you are making your own rules and laws, things like drugs, prostitution and gambling could be legal. (Kinda like Las Vegas) You could charge a lot of $$$$ for a visit which would give you scads of money to hire a really good security force. (X-mercenaries maybe).

    Sounds like fun!!!

That is the idea I was suggesting. A largish island, with room for an airfield and usable ports. Some natural resources to be developed and sold.

All of this sort of like our own Sim Island, with no people, government, no industry, etc. What could we as the first inhabitants set up as a perfect government model?

    I dunno who "us" is.

I'm a servant of a corporation to. When my corporation does well, I do well. Therefore Republicans or Democrats can serve my best interests.Everyone else can go to Europe and live a life of "free from want".

Do you even work, or are you too proud to become a "corporate slave" so you are one of the 46.2 percent of Americans recieving a government handout?

Being a corporate slave is more honorable than being a welfare case.

the island has no corporations yet. there is no legal vehicle to bestow corporation status. maybe the formation of corporations should not be permitted.

How about letting the island remain free of government? If you'll look at history as well as what is happening in the U.S. today, you will see that all governments eventually devolve into tyrannies.

No government would devolve into tyranny. Something will be required as it grows in population and business.

yeah right. The minute a group of businessmen get together and invest thier capital collectively to promote the sale and distribution of all those natural resources the island has.. you'll have a corporation and they will expect legal protections.

Bermuda is nothing BUT corporations.. look how well they are doing.

the world is in the middle of globalisation already, if
you would like to establish some sort of government, it is impossible for you
to put up that is totally outside the ruling system, something like a break away
    a new model.............it cannot work.

if the island is virgin and you would like to establish it out from the scratch
you would require the political and economic assistance of say, the G 20.

because the ruling system is capitalism,
you definitely have to be a capitalistic minded individual.

if you dare stay outside the ruling system you cannot move forward because
even before you make your first step you could have collapsed already.

just like the people's republic of china, they claim that thay they are a
socialist country with a chinese character, but they practice capitalism
because if they don't, they cannot do tradings with the prime movers of
    the world's economy.

those who claim to be practicing socialism cannot last long because
    the ruling system is capitalism.

you cannot give money to the people by simply giving it to them.
for one country to move smoothly along with the prime political,
economic and social movers you just have to exploit the workers.

no country can ever operate effectively outside the steel framework of
    the exploitative nature of capitalism.

    only capitalism works.
there is no other possible alternative.

Corporations are a legal entity. Originally they were temporary business alliances for construction of a railroad, or a bridge. That sort of thing, not a permanent business model.

The start of the Island's government.

Law #1 No business corporations chartered on the island. Only individuals my petition government officials.
Law #2 Individuals have a right to buy, manufacture, grow and sell any product, service or idea.

This is the same scenario the Founders faced. There is already a template. Why not use it?

I agree, but we get a "do over" with this place. I didn't want to "personalize" it by using the USA and I wanted to see how difficult it is to devise a government from the beginning.

    So far no takers.:bored:

you seem to be travelling back in time.

    one scenario:
if you own a "sim island" and the rest of the world is just like
this "sim island" then you start building/inventing your own first
tool which is the hammer - departing from a solid stone.

everyone would enjoy the freedom of roaming the entire island
without any fence so there is no need for a visa.

    another scenario:

the whole world has the benefit of a digital technology
with only one virgin island left "sim island".

first question is what is the orientation of the first habitat/s?
    * cave man?
    * present time?

if the first habitat is the cave man then he shall survive.
if the first habitat is the modern day man he could die
    in the long run.

if your system is self built - self imposed then it could grow, could possibly
    lead to capitalism.
but if you will import a system then it is an instant capitalism.

No democracy or democracy-like systems. Rulers would be selected based upon merit in intelligence, knowledge, and compassion, backed by a Constitution that has logical rules such as: 1. Do what you want so long as you don't harm other people. 2. You don't have the right to never be offended. 3. Rulers can't be involved in voting upon rules that would benefit themselves more than most citizens.

In order to maximize productivity, we would want neither full socialism nor full capitalism. Maximizing the value of merit maximizes productivity, and you do this by socializing essentials like medical care and education (everybody has a chance to succeed) but being capitalistic when it comes to more luxury-based things.

From what we are agreeing then, we need to draft our own independent constitution.

Then we may want to start with:

    • The Island is an independent land with allegiance to no other nation on Earth.
    • No business corporations will be chartered on The Island.
    • Only individuals may petition (still to be determined) government officials
    • Rulers are selected based on intelligence, knowledge, and compassion. (selection process still undetermined)
    • Individuals have a right to buy, manufacture, grow and sell any product, service or idea. (with yet undetermined restrictions)
    • You don't have the right to never be offended. (Freedom of speech, press, art and worship)
    • Rulers can't be involved in voting upon rules that would benefit themselves more than most citizens. (All inhabitants are equal under the law.)

This is the classic capitalist/communist debate. In my opinion, the ones that know how to purify water, farm, fish and build shelter would clearly be more "valuable" than those who do not learn or know those skills. Thus, I would leans towards a capitalistic society with some regulations to ensure that people don't die off (i.e. really socialism with a strong leaning towards capitalism). Others might suggest that everyone is entitled to an equal portion of everything. I do not endorse that idea until everyone is fully capable of every skill.

the composition of our society shall always be
between the master and the slave.

    master = capitalist

    slave = workers

this is a lie that is at the base of all fears of inadequecy and jealousy. The captialist, the producer, is no more the master of himself than any other man. His workers are not his slaves, but his team, he cannot succeed without his workers and the workers cannot succeed without him. Without him where would be their jobs? Where would be their livelihood? Without them the capitalist would be the same.

Do you think any other man owes you anything for nothing? The capitalist became who he is by his own effort and everyone else deserves no part in the functioning of his life or his buisness.

No one is this situation is being forced to sacrifice themselves, it is a trade and will remain so. If you feel that you are a slave to you boss then quit and find a new job you are not being forced to stay.

    As for the island

Certain voting rights would have to be enacted for sure. It will not always be possible to keep the people in positions of power compassionate, protective and just. Who decides the ruler? Who decides who fits the description? Another person in power? And how do they come into being?

I propose a voting system for SOME issues. But people should be forced to pass a type of general knowledge/intelligence test before being allowed a say in their government.

I will be back later to finish this

A high quality education system on The Island could provide a basic education of the politics of The Island.

Requirements for leadership is another point to be decided.

I propose those that have no value to society be exiled from it. Why should we have to give to those who will never repay us? Why should we sacrifice our lives and be given a tax to support those who refuse to support themselves? People will always cry "I never had a chance!" our base of socialism, will give them the chance, the chance to stand on their own two feet and live, but when they cry "I can't do what you can! You should support me! I need it!" When they cry that they need not live for themselves, but cling onto other peoples lives like a parasite desperatly clinging to it's host while giving nothing in return but the rot it brings, we will exile them.

After a time in the Jamestown settlement, the law was, "if you do not work you do not eat". This was after a commune type of government was tried, and some did nothing but consume off the producers.

So a commune type of system is out.
