Emanuels First Test: Gang Mob Attacks Continue in Chicago After Memorial Beach Closing

Chicagoans flocked to North Avenue Beach last Monday for Memorial Day, only to have their holiday fun spoiled when Chicago police closed the beach. For the first time in Chicagos history, North Avenue Beach, where residents go to cool off, was closed due to excessive heat according to Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. McCarthy was backed up by newly elected Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who claimed there was a surge in calls due to heat exhaustion, and the reason for the closing was to give ambulances and paramedics easier access to treat those in need.

Fox Chicago News lightly covered reasons for the beach closing other than heat, which were missing from other local news outlets, CBS and ABC. Fox reported an unusually high presence of Chicago street gangs.

One resident interviewed by Fox claimed:

They were hooting and hollering and looking for confrontations, Daley said. A kid got in my face and was looking for a confrontation.

Others reported cyclists were actually thrown off of their bikes. Many believe the real reason for the beach closing was exactly this unwarranted violence. Police blogs and readers of local news sites were also quick to respond to what actually happened, and the reports are quite shocking. As many 2000 young teenage thugs stormed the beach, in an apparent effort to cause mayhem on those enjoying the hot sunny weather.

A comment on the Chicago Sun Times post reads:

Um folks believe me the heat had nothing to do with this. Its more like the 2000 or so punk teens that showed up around 3pm and started causing problems that led to the closure.

Local morning radio hosts Don Wade & Roma were quick to cover the story as well, and rightly question what actually happened. Listen as they point out the seriousness of this story, and what appears to be intentional omission by the Chicago mainstream media, leaving out critical information in their explanation for the beach closing.

Wade comments, what may be even more alarming is the fact that the incident was not isolated to Chicago. Drudge Reportand other outlets reported Boston, Nashville, Charlotte, Long Island, Rochester, and Miami were among the many other cities that experienced a large up tick in holiday violence on beaches and popular holiday areas. This may have been the result of gang members spreading their message to cause disruptions via social media outlets such as Twitter. Wade goes on to bring attention to another major concern, that President Obama and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder have beganaggressively investigating big city police departments, and their systematic abuses of civil rights, such as false arrests and excessive force. Roma demands answers during the segment, and claims that Emanuels response to the incidents in Chicago may have been acceptable for a first time occurrence; however, he must come up with better answers and solutions if this problem continues.

As of 1100 hours or so - with projected high of 95 degrees or better, so that means no beaches open this evening either. And we see that Rahm is saving money on printing signs, too. Maybe there is hope for this guy after all.

Fractured gangs blamed for Chicago homicide surge
June 12, 2012 Maybe it is the splintering of established drug gangs that has young men grabbing the tools of their trade handguns to jockey for position? Or it is that rival gangs, once miles apart in different public housing complexes, suddenly finding themselves sharing the same street corner?

Whatever the reasons, Chicago has seen a spike in its homicide rate with eight killed and at least 35 wounded in a spasm of gunfire last weekend alone that has authorities scrambling to put more police on the street and some frightened residents retreating deep into their homes. To be sure, the violence is nowhere near its historical peak of the early 1990s when Chicago recorded roughly 900 homicides per year. But from Jan. 1 through late May there were 203 homicides, an increase of more than 50 percent over the 134 during the same period in 2011. And in some neighborhoods, just miles but a world away from the gleaming lake and lush parks of which the city is so proud, gunfire has produced the kind of death toll that would alarm entire cities.

In Englewood, a roughly 20-by-20 block South Side neighborhood, homicides jumped from 40 in 2010 to 60 last year an increase that almost equals the tally of 21 homicides in the city of Seattle for the whole of 2011. The total number of homicides in cities such as Cleveland, Milwaukee, Washington, D.C. and Kansas City, Mo., each barely double the toll in Englewood. Mayor Rahm Emanuel has made combatting gangs a priority and has stood with Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy to unveil a plan of attack. Among the new police tactics is the deployment of dozens of specialized undercover officers to units on Chicago's West and South sides and saturating those neighborhood streets with uniformed cops. In addition, Gov. Pat Quinn on Monday signed into law the Illinois Street Gang RICO Act, which aims to dismantle gangs by boosting penalties for crimes performed as part of a criminal enterprise.

Though police are loath to attribute this winter's unusually warm weather as a possible factor, because it smacks of excuse-making, there were far more people on the streets in January, February and March including gang members than during those months in 2011. Just as important have been dramatic changes within the gangs themselves. "In the past the gangs were very organized from the top down," said Sgt. Matthew Little of the Chicago Police Department's gang enforcement unit. As more gang leaders are arrested, convicted and sent to prison, the gangs they left behind have become "very splintered," he said.

Young men on the city's streets agree. "There is no one to control this, so it has become haywire," said Devon Tims, who identified himself as one of the Chicago Vice Lords, making him one of the city's estimated 70,000 gang members. In interviews, McCarthy said the "fracturing" of larger gangs into smaller ones has doubled the number of factions and conflicts. "These kids have guns and they end up using them," he said. McCarthy said the gangs are far more territorial and rigid than those that operated when he was a ranking commander in the New York City Police Department and the chief in Newark, N.J. And that means trouble when a gang member simply crosses the street into rival territory. "If we see a car with three of (one gang's) guys three blocks over there (on another gang's turf), they are probably going to shoot someone," said Leo Schmitz, a gang enforcement commander who was redeployed in January to command Englewood's police district.

Chicago Has Violent Mother's Day Weekend
May 9, 2016 - Mothers Day weekend saw eight people killed and 43 wounded by gun violence in Chicago, the most violent weekend in the city since the end of September, according to an analysis of Tribune data.

At least 1,225 people have been shot in Chicago this year as violence continues at a pace not seen in the city since the 1990s, according to data kept by Tribune and police. This past weekends shootings were spread across the city, from the Roseland neighborhood to the south to West Rogers Park to the north. Two people were shot on Chicago highways, including a 35-year-old man who died after being shot in the back on Lake Shore Drive. The weekends youngest homicide victim was 16-year-old Nathan Hicks, who was shot in the chest as he stood on a sidewalk in East Garfield Park. The oldest was 58-year-old Andres Rivera, killed at his dinner table in Archer Heights when a bullet pierced the front door and hit him in the head, police said.

In just 3 ½ hours early Saturday, a 30-year-old man was killed and 14 other people were wounded the equivalent of someone shot every 14 minutes. From Friday evening to Saturday morning, two people were killed and 25 were wounded; from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning, three were killed and 15 were wounded. On Sunday morning the pace began to slow, and six people were shot, three fatally. The burst of violence comes on the heels of a new poll showing a wide disparity in how whites and blacks in Chicago view the safety of their neighborhoods. Many of the shootings over the weekend occurred in predominantly black areas.

According to the poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the New York Times, 41 percent of black respondents felt not safe at all or not too safe compared to 17 percent of white respondents. Forty-four percent of blacks rated their neighborhoods as a poor place to raise their children, compared to 16 percent of whites. Asked how likely it is that a young person in their neighborhood would be a victim of crime, 49 percent of blacks said very likely compared to 19 percent of whites.

20 People Shot in 16 Hours in Chicago Violence
May 20, 2016 At least 20 people were shot over 16 hours in Chicago on Wednesday into early Thursday, including a 12-year-old boy shot while at a restaurant and a couple in their 20s shot in the South Loop during a road rage incident that began on Lake Shore Drive, police said.

The boy and some friends were entering Golden Fish & Chicken shortly before 7 p.m. when a red SUV pulled up and shots were fired, according to Officer Kevin Quaid, a police spokesman. The boy suffered a graze wound to his leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, police said. Im just thanking God, the boys older brother, Johnny Lindsey, told WGN-TV. It could have been worse. Hes OK. Im OK. The road rage shooting happened about seven hours later, shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday, police said. A 23-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were in a red car on Lake Shore Drive near Michigan Avenue when another vehicle followed them and someone inside it fired shots, police said.

The man drove to Jefferson and Harrison streets in the South Loop, where the couple called 911, police said. The man was hit in the buttocks and the woman was hit in the head, police said. Police said the shooting appeared to stem from a road rage incident but had no details. The gun violence Wednesday and early Thursday also included two fatal shootings, both in the Austin neighborhood. One of them occurred on West Augusta Boulevard in the Austin neighborhood around 5:30 p.m. when someone in a car opened fire at two men, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman.

A 22-year-old man was hit in the wrist and the chest and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Sweeney said. A 21-year-old man also was wounded and went to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was in good condition with a gunshot wound to his finger and arm, Sweeney said. In the same neighborhood, a 28-year-old man was found dead in a vacant lot on West Walton Street at 9:35 a.m., said Officer Laura Amezaga, a police spokeswoman. The man suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, Amezaga said. Police News Affairs was releasing no further information about the killing.

At Least 63 People Shot in Chicago Over Holiday Weekend
May 31, 2016 | Between Friday afternoon and Monday evening, at least 63 people were shot in Chicago, five of them killed, including a 15-year-old girl, the city's NBC-5 television station reported.

Over the same period last year, Chicago recorded 48 shootings, 14 of them fatal; and there were 26 shootings (7 murders) over Memorial Day weekend 2014. NBC-5 quoted a police official as saying that about 1,500 people are driving the violence, much of it gang-related.

In an attempt to quell the anticipated summertime violence, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel urged Chicago residents, faith and community groups, and businesses to organize citywide anti-violence activities on Friday, May 27, 2016 from 7 to 9 pm. "Every block, every street, every neighborhood should be involved!" said the mayor's message.

He urged people to organize neighborhood barbeques, walks, clean-ups, prayer groups, and sports activities to show "presence and solidarity" in creating a "safer and more peaceful city." In the first five months of 2016, at least 1,400 people have been shot in Chicago, according to the The Chicago Tribune tally.

Singer on Mexican 'The Voice' dies in Chicago after shooting
June 18, 2016 A Chicago singer who appeared on the Mexican version of "The Voice" in 2011 has died after he was shot in an ambush while celebrating his birthday with friends.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed that 45-year-old Alejandro "Jano" Fuentes died on Saturday. He was shot three times in the head late Thursday outside his Tras Bambalinas School on Chicago's southwest side.

The attack happened less than a week after the killing of Christina Grimmie, who appeared on the U.S. version of the show. Authorities say a man shot her while she was signing autographs after a performance in Orlando, Florida. The man then killed himself.

Fuentes got into his car with friends and an armed man suddenly ordered Fuentes out of that vehicle and shot him. Police said they had no suspects in the attack. WGN television said police were investigating whether the shooting was an attempted carjacking or a robbery. Friends of Fuentes in Chicago said they were holding a vigil and memorial for the singer at his studio in Chicago on Saturday evening.

More than a dozen relatives and friends stood near the emergency entrance. They hugged, cried and smoked cigarettes.

A woman in a gray T-shirt and long jean shorts walked out of the emergency room and started crying and breathing heavily. She and other relatives and friends walked up to the man in the black T-shirt. He was in that car? she asked, pointing at the sedan. And they just shot it up? The man nodded yes. The womans wailing grew louder. She said the 15-year-old was her brother. A woman in a white T-shirt put her arms around her shoulders, consoling her.

As time passed, more relatives walked in and out of the hospital. A woman in dark shorts and a white-black top came out. She started walking toward the gray car, crying. Her sister, the woman in the gray T-shirt, put her arms around her, holding her back. All I want to know is where my little brother is, the woman yelled. I just want to see him. The two sisters hugged after a moment, sobbing together. Pamela Johnson, 44, a friend of the family, stood nearby with crossed arms, shaking her head. We need martial law. Period, Johnson said. If its to protect our children, then so be it. There is a difference between Millennium Park and 95th Street.
