The crazy right-wingers want people to be walking around with guns. Wow. What's next? Legalize nuclear weapons?

We need to outlaw guns. Guns cause violence. Let's take a look at the violence from country-to-country, yes?

    In one year, guns murdered...

    17 in Finland
    35 in Australia
    39 in England and Wales
    60 in Spain
    194 in Germany
    200 in Canada
    9,484 in the United States!!!!

We need to BAN these guns like England and Wales did! Ugh these crazy right-wingers just don't look at the facts.

Not rationally debating, but instead personally insulting. Typical conservative response. :bored:

Starting this kind of thread with insults and exagerated rhetoric is hardly conducive to the debate you claim to be looking for.

If you're going to present statistics like this, you need to say which year and it's generally better to present them per-capita (don't worry, the difference will be just as dramatic). You'll probably need to address the wide variation within the US too. You may well be asked for sources of your statistics so it's best to get them in place from the start.

We never banned all guns though we have always had very strong restrictions which got a little stronger over the past couple of decades. The previously tightly regulated hand-guns were completely banned though rifles and shotguns are available with an appropriate licence. Regardless of the law, the UK has never had a huge number of guns held by civilians.

Of course, the biggest problem you face is that banning legal ownership of guns doesn't make them disappear from society. I'd much prefer to see fewer in principal but I don't think a simple ban is the way to achieve that, especially in the US where there is such a strong cultural tradition of gun ownership.

So we should increase the number of deaths by allowing guns? lol what kind of response is this?

A car is a good use for transportation. A gun? It's used solely to kill.

Wrong. You need to go right up to the person to kill them with a knife/baseball bat. With a gun, it's very powerful and can shoot from far away.
The reality is... there are a lot of gun deaths.

I thought this was your signature? Why is it showing up in my quote?

Yup... so more guns cause more violence. Common sense, really. And here's that source:

Not necessarily. If you were holding a gun right now, would you be more violent? The UK has many fewer gun crimes than the US but we're far from immune to crime and violence in general. A gun has potential to make a incident of violence more serious but you'd need to do better to demonstrate that private gun ownership causes violence.

That just shifts my objections to the presentation of those statistics on to them. They're fairly meaningless figures out of context (the one year could be 1865 after all). The organisation clearly favours one side of the debate and while there is nothing wrong with that, it does mean they need to provide independent sources for their statistics to be taken seriously.

Why are you sharing your opinion at all? Why are you on this site?

Yeah... UK has less murders. Less guns, too. See?

The Brady Campaign are honest people. They obviously mean in the same year.

    Mhm... sure they do.

    Indeed, ban all guns.

On Switzerland; they have a militia-style gun system— they don't just hand them out like in the US. Their requirements would be decried as 'unconstitutional' in America.

    Exactly.

If you don't want to discuss guns and think it is an insignificant topic, by all means, go to another section of the forum.

    Irrelevant, though. It's not required.

Banning guns won't make guns and gun violence automatically disappear, except in liberals' wet dreams. The guns are already out there. If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Law-abiding people will have no way to defend themselves from the lawless. The nanny state won't protect them, either.

Who kills more dangerous criminals? Law-abiding gun-carriers or the police? Hint: it's the police.

Liberal Activist.....If you hate guns so much, why do you want to have discussion about them.?

Why don't you go to another topic.

    <<<Mod edit: Insult removed>>>

I would and will encourage people to consider buying a firearm to protect themselves from the evil that does exsist in todays world....I choose to protect myself in case of danger. Everyone has a choice.

Infact....If anyone is considering on purchaseing a firearm for home defence or personal concealment carry.
If you choose too....Take a handgun self defence course.....well worth it. Get yourself a Concealment Carry Permit.
And a fine handgun I suggest the 'Bersa Thunder' in .380 caliber.
It's a fine reliable, compact, well known gun at a very affordable price...New or Used.
Resembles the PPK gun like James Bond used in the movies.

There is no need for a firearm in a modern society.

Good luck from taking away all the guns from the John Wayne's of the world out there. The mindset is that they can't live without their precious handguns or rifles. BTW, I don't' think that all right-winger are crazy; just some of the ones who insist on carrying fire arms. Those are some scary people.

In a nice neighborhood; there have only been 4 robberies and 9 assaults... in the past ten years. Needless to say nearly no one owns a gun and no one at all carries.

Well first of all...anyone who is carring a gun concealed, you would not know it....hello.
And is is probably nice to know that their are many small towns with under 50 population. Were one sheriff and a deputy exsist.
Reminds me of that old TV Series....

Conceal and Carry is inexplicably rare in my area; and state. I never said CCW, I said 'carry'.

    My town has 10k+ people.
