The Demand for Water Will Increase Five Times By 2050

    By Robert Lenzner | Jul. 23 2011 - 10:14 am |

“As 70% of the globe’s population will live in urban areas by 2050 the demand for water will skyrocket some 5 times according to a must-read 37 page study on water(the new oil) just published by Citigroup. Think about it; water for flushing billions more toilets, watering flower beds everywhere and washing tens of millions new cars must increase the $450 billion global water market. Infrastructure must be built on water utilities, canals delivering the water, on boats shipping it, on rail lines carrying it.

Bankers will be called upon to finance capital investment. Companies in the water business may well profit at a greater rate than GDP. Sound Global in China, an engineering and construction firm; Danaher, Roper Industries, Nalco and Pentair are publicly traded US companies that will benefit.

Another timely investment publication is the monthly letter from Jeremy Grantham’s GMO investment management firm, which deals with the natural resource shortages coming down the pike due to a population increase of another 2 billion people, a developing shortage of fertilizer, and recurrent shortages of some metals. Clearly, agricultural land is in short supply and scientific breakthroughs will be necessary to feed 9 billion people. Grantham predicts we will handle this challenge but fitfully and not without higher costs for food products."

    …….

As mining and oil companies continue digging and drilling for fossil fuels while destroying our environment, wildlife, contaminating our streams, rivers, and oceans, and when we look at our burgeoning population we realize that our consuming need at this moment in history is looking to our sources of water, the quality of it, plus our future food sources which are being decimated at an unacceptable level.

Our rivers and streams can contain traces of contraceptives, antidepressants,
antibiotics given to livestock, pharmaceuticals, rocket fuel, arsenic, pesticides from farm runoffs are just a few of the traces found in our drinking water. People have had their tap water catch on fire, others have their drinking water bubble like Alka-Seltzer, or contain brown sludge.

It is clear that good clean water is a needed source of health to every American, and should be a right that we automatically can count on, but that is not the case. More leases are given to mining and drilling companies than regulatory controls are made, and this is a severe detriment to our citizens’ health and safety.

Our government must now start a regimen of checking quality of all public water systems, fining those not in compliance with federal regulations. All water supplies in the vicinity of drilling and mining for fossil fuels should be monitored regularly, and restrictions put on companies that contaminate local water supplies. Coal fired and nuclear plants should be checked regularly so that their waste is not entering any water supplies.

    Recommendation for better water management...

UN Report: Population Growth to Cause Water Crunch
Monday, August 22nd, 2011 - A new report calls for better water and food management to prevent crises as the global population growth causes stress to natural resources.

I have to agree with Waltky. This seems to be a more of a population probelm, then enviormental.

Fountain Valley, CA Water Plant - It recycles more than 10,000 gallons a day... it is the "wave" of the future. As a Huntington Beach local (right next to Fountain Valley) we all know this.

    From toilets to taps.

Also... desalinization will come as it is in the Middle East.

The whole liberal anti-growth attempt to control our water since they are failing on the control out air with Global Warming is next... look out world. These authoritarian Marxists will use any angel to gain control.

According to the UN the majority of the world population starved to death in the late 80s, we went into an ice age, oil ran out shortly thereafter, and soon what's left of us will be undersea.

We should definitely take 40 year predictions from the UN very seriously!!!

desalinization tech will easily counter this problem.

They would have if the Green Revolution hadn't happened, but millions of Africans did starve, remember the whole "We are the World" thing?

And it's the conservatives that are taking control of water supplies around the world any way they can so they can make billions gouging people for it like they do with oil.

    Green revolution?

Unless you are referring to advances in agriculture that have increased crop yields dramatically, you're full of crap.

Of course that's what I'm referring to, you would know that if you were adequately educated. Without huge crop increases millions more people would have starved than already have.

But we want even more suffering because it's easy to make money off people, either as consumers or laborers.

There will be protracted litigation by leftists before desalination becomes a reality in most of California. A possible desalination plant was recently killed in my hometown because of conerns about its impact on wildlife.

Yeah if only we could have a society as well fed as Soviet Russia under Stalin. Can you imagine if even the poor in our country were fat? I dream of the endless feasting that must go on in North Korea.

If it wasn't for that horrible horrible profit motive and the liberty to act upon it we'd all be as plump and fat as a North Korean.

Man, that is going to suck, isn't it? Kevin Costner to the rescue.

Don't place your faith on de-salination, these processes are MASSIVELY energy hungry and will not support us moving forward.

LOL, well folks, the earth has the exact same amt of water it's always had, not a drop less, not a drop more. Dinosaurs peed in the same water you drink today.

A shortage of potable water is indeed an issue exaggerated by population growth, but it's still not a SKY IS FALLING political issue either liberals or conservatives can do much about. I just shake my head everytime I see that commercial about bringing clean water to Kenya. Good grief, one would think the most basic of human necessities would be a priority for every govt in the world.

Desalinization is the most logical answer. That and expecting people to get off their duffs and take care of their own. Teaching them to stop defecating in their own water supplies would be a huge step forward. Unfortunately, that happens in some of the same countries where Obama has dined with their leaders in golden palaces... and never mentioned a word about the need to provide clean water to the 65 million people who don't have it.

    Libs are such hypocrites.

'Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink."

two thirds of the world is water. If you like we can all pretend that we cannot tap into the oceans. The truth is we don't have a need here to tap into the ocean as it is more expensive to purify for drinking.

The problem of water in other countries is that we don't give away our purification technologies nor do we dig near enough wells in Africa and areas where water cotamination and water shortage is a problem.

If you would like to put this into perspective you should understand that relatively its impossible for us to run out of water. We can even purify pee.

Please do not be silly enough to worry about these things as the end of us somehow. The end of us will be when the people we neglect to give food and water convince bleeding hearts to kill in THEIR name and complelty slaughter the richer nations for being greedy, vain, selfish and violent.

    Really?

That statement does not seem to me to be rooted in fact.

But I am prepared to be surprised. Can you please provide me with your source of information that would show we could make a "huge step forward" with our water problems in this world if people would stop defecating in their water?

    A link would be great.

Just think of it this way 286 with the Arctic Ice Cap melting and seal levels rising, the economy will get a boost building desalinization plants to take advantage of all that added water. Lots of new jobs, plenty of water and lower the increase in sea lever all rolled into one. Your not looking on the bright side here.

Really? Once that water is taken out of the sea and used, water will not find it's way back to the sea?

A reasonably sensible post and you have to resort to idiotic partisanship at the end.
Yes, there is the same amount of water as there always has been. However you may have noticed that the population of the world is growing exponentially. These people need feeding. Land suitable for food production is a finite resource.
Sorry but this is NOT a conservative/liberal issue. It's far, far more important than ephemeral political trivia.

BTW the quote is 'Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink...'

Yes. Also the fact that roughly 70% of the Earth's surface is covered in water, I'm not concerned at all. Just another Greenie attempt to scare us all into submission. :bored:

then what is your suggestion? Do we begin with Europe and force them to adopt the 1 child per male/female couple rule of China? Do we then move that rule to Oceania and then Canada?

On the contrary, melting land ice (Greenland for example) will cause a rise in global sea levels.
    Sea ice obviously will not.
