This Muslim man was making 9 dollars an hour working as a security guard for a company and now has the opportunity to make hundreds of thousands of dollars in a lawsuit.

The company said he could not have a beard under the rules but he said his religion makes it neccessary.

A government agency has given him the go ahead to file a lawsuit for this company on the basis of discrimination.

Under most regulations the business would have to provide the man some form of reasonable accommodation for his religious beliefs. I fail to see how this man having a beard is unreasonable.

Its only a beard for heavens sake! But why would someone take a job knowing they would have to shave, and then complain about it?

It doesn't matter what policies the business had in place. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 circumvents it.

Sure it matters. Can't businesses set their own rules and dress codes? The mans beard violates the dress code the company has set out...

The company has to offer reasonable accommodation to any and all religions. It is the law.

Reasonable. It is not unreasonable to get him to shave. They can allow some things and disallow others. Why hire a man when he refuses to comply with the dress code anyway?

Rules are rules. If the company said he couldn't have a beard, then he can't have a beard, if he wants to work there. A company shouldn't have bend its rules or make exceptions due to one's religious beliefs.

He says the company didn't tell him about the clean shaven rule until around 6 months later.

I am unsure whose side I am on now.

How do you figure that's where she's coming from? She's wrong 97.874% of the time. This is one that she's making sense.

Ever think he's lying? It takes someone 6 months to realize NOBODY has a beard?

I have thought of that. I don't know, but I do think that if you are told to shave, then you shave. If you want to keep your job, then you comply with the dress code.

The guys had lawsuit in his eyeballs - Seattle is a very liberal city....he'll win:twisted:

That's what I liked about working for the Red Cross - no politics or religion allowed!

Reasonable rules were set and they were followed or the employee was gone and that even included the volunteers.....

Other wise you can rightly sue the company for a large chunk of change for religious discrimination. I'm fairly sure religious accommodation laws are the same for most of the western world.

He played Rent a Cop, yeah, that could be a form of law enforcement. Cops don't usually have beards unless they're undercover which obviously don't pertain to him.

requirements for the big religions such as muslim, christian, judaism etc.. are allowed to go against the rules under american law

everyone else has to shave because he falls under one of the major religions.

If the Muslim were a moderate and he were acting in good faith (i.e. if that is a fact about the beard) I would hire him no problem. I would say the religion clause overrides the dress code rules. In the future if I didn’t want to hire someone for any reason there are ways around any rule or law. Is it ethical or moral, that depends on a few things~ morals are so subjective, unless religious then they are spelled out for you, that too has its good side and a bad one..

agreed the best way is not to hire him because it would be hard to prove in court they did not hire him because of his beard..

the HR department for this company was very ignorant because they made his case

Is it a requirement of the Koran to remain unshaven or a tradition?

It's not clear, with people sitting on both sides of the fence:

They have a beard to look like Mohammed, so it would be like a christian turning up to work in a loin cloth:
