    Obama abandons an ally

Bowing to Chinese pressure, the U.S. will deny Taiwan's request for 66 new F-16C/D fighter aircraft, a Taiwan Ministry of National Defense (MND) official said.

This is truly unfathomable, but completely believable.

WW 3 will ensue because we have an insatiable need to borrow money and feed the civilian sloth.

I don't even recognize my country anymore.

Why China's response to US arms sales to Taiwan is so muted
September 27, 2011 - In an effort to maintain ties with the US ahead of a major shift in China's leadership, China's response on a multimillion dollar arms sale to Taiwan, a normally divisive subject, appears muted.

Obama had not choice, China now controls your foreign policy because they own your debt. You and I mean "you" the American people, should have thought about that before you borrowed it all in the first place.

You've only yourself to blame, for putting your president in this uncomfortable position.

    What would Republicans do differently?

Get China to call in our debt?

Actually I think Obama and the Chinese share a common goal of bringing the US to its knees.

Obama doesn't want America to be No 1 anymore and neither do the Chicoms.

    Stop what?

If you mean the borrowing I think Obama will end up borrowing far, far more than Bush did.

And I think Bush would have sold the jets to Taiwan over the Chinese objections.

I would sell the jets to our allies.

wow, is it that hard? Has China said they will call in our debt if we make this sale? no

Much of this is the fault of the Taiwanese themselves. For a period of ten years the KMT and the DPP fought over defense spending and weapons acquisition. Their politics were paralyzed. Now the world has changed and its too late for them. Taiwan has no future as a separate entity unless it acquires nuclear weapons.

You'll still owe the Chinese all that money and will still be unable to act. This is the bottom line.

The paper held by the Chinese is worthless. It will never be repaid. And yes I understand the consequences of default.

Well saying that about Obama is pretty stupid.

Of course China wants to break the USA's hegemony, so do most Western nations as your country's foreign policy is such dumbness.

China and the rest of the Western world however don't want the USA to be "brought to its knees", again that's dumb. China wants you to pay your debts (the money you owe it that it earned from its labour) and the rest of the world simply doesn't like your GOP driven "with us or against us" attitude.

It would be very naive to believe that China or any one else would accept the wholescale abuse of hegemony.

If he would have, he would be as dumb as people say. It's called financial warfare. The US did the same to the UK during the Suez canal "episode", the loans that were being used were the Marshall Plan loans.

You'll pay. Or the consequences will not be to your liking. No one will ever lend to you again and your international trade will dry up. All US companies will be expelled from China. You've too much to loose.

Imo America in its current form is through. There will be something different. One of the reasons for this change is the impossibility of paying the national debt. All of your assumptions are predicated on the continued existence of the United States in its current form. There are profound social, political, demographic, and human capital changes going on in America that foreigners don't perceive. Bad things are going to happen to America in any event. By repudiating our debt we allow China to share in the pain.

I agree, the status quo is unsustainable. Personally, I see a complete inability for the GO and Dems to compromise (and both are to blame, with the lions share going to the GOP). The solution is simple, divide the country into two sets of states.
