For those of you who like to cut your daily dose of partisan posturing with some analysis:
    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/63069.html

As I've noted, the one dodgy bit in the plan is that the party responsible for making sure it is paid for is the deficit commission. But that doesn't take away from the merits of the proposal. I guess we'll see if the GOP is so far down the rabbit hole that they'll run away from a package that is mostly made up of things they supported in the past.

That may be true but how long will the jobs last?

We gave Obama $1 trillion in 2009 and most of those jobs are gone now.

This is no way to run a country or an economy.

We cannot trust Obama with that kind of money ever again. We were all fools last time, we'd be fools again if we went along with big plans that are unsupported with money printed out of thins air.

He wants to pay more, and actually still OWES MORE. Isn't the liberal left that says the rich don't pay their fair share. Now here is a liberal left who still really hasn't cause he still owes MORE. The $4 bill was good, but that is less than what he owes, especially if he is complaining that he isn't taxed enough.

That's a bit tough to predict, isn't it?

Some are temporary construction jobs. But the incentives for hiring wouldn't be creating temporary positions. And the infrastructure improvements will provide long-term benefits beyond the jobs.

And besides, the point of any sort of stimulus in a recession is to help get us through until the economy begins an upturn again. It's also intended to help spark that upturn by supporting economic activity -- both directly, and through spin-off effects (like those$1.9 million people spending their paychecks).

In addition, we recoup some of the money because we'll be paying less in unemployment benefits. That's part of what makes the $4,000 tax credit for hiring the long-term unemployed a good idea. We pay 4K, but save more than that on unpaid UI.

    What makes you say that?

First of all, most economists credit the stimulus with saving millions of jobs. That wasn't necessarily creating new jobs -- it was avoiding the elimination of existing ones.

Secondly, the jobs created in the recovery have not disappeared. They're still there. Since the recovery began, the economy has added about 1 million jobs.

That's not anywhere close to replacing the 2.8 million jobs lost in the recession. Which is why unemployment is still at 9%. But the jobs are not "gone."

Look, we had a very deep recession. Most economists say the stimulus worked: it saved millions of jobs, kept the recession from turning into a depression, got us started toward recovery.

However, the recovery has been weak. Frankly, the recovery from the 2001 recession was also very weak in terms of job creation, which is why it was called a "jobless" recovery. It took six years and a couple of economic bubbles to get employment down to the 5% range -- just in time for the bubbles to burst and throw us into recession.

It's no coincidence that the economy began a serious recovery when the stimulus kicked in, and began to slow down when the stimulus faded. The stimulus worked: the question is what is keeping the private sector from picking up the ball and carrying it forward.

My two cents: the continuing fallout from the housing bubble and the lack of serious reform in the banking sector. The first depresses consumer spending, both by making them feel poor and drying up home-equity loans, which was one of the big fuelers of consumer spending in the last decade. The latter makes it hard to get credit, as well as making businesses wonder when "too big to fail" banks will again crash the economy.

Both need to be worked through before the economy will seriously start going up again.

"Moody's: Obama jobs plan will create 1.9 million jobs"

I believe you and Moody's are very mistaken, CarlB.

The other stimulus bills have failed. This one new one will do no better!

    Please check this out.

"Consider the direct results of the Obama programs. A few have performed better than expected—e.g., the auto bailouts, although a rapid private bankruptcy was preferable and GM and Chrysler are not yet denationalized successes. But the failed stimulus bill cost an astounding $280,000 per job—over five times median pay—by the administration's inflated estimates of jobs "created or saved," and much more using more realistic estimates."

"Perpetually overpromising and underdelivering is not remotely good enough, not even for government work. No corporate CEO could survive such a clear history of failure. The economic records set on Mr. Obama's watch really are historic (see nearby table). These include the first downgrade of sovereign U.S. debt in American history, and, relative to GDP, the highest federal spending in U.S. history save the peak years of World War II, plus the highest federal debt since just after World War II."

can you show us where old people are not paying taxes?

My mom that is in a home pays taxes.

Illegals AKA undocumented d-baggers, on the other -hand, pay zero income taxes.

low declared income d-bagger spongers also pay no income tax.

This is a favorite conservative point, but as has been pointed out ad nauseum, it's pretty much baseless.

First, salaries are only part of the cost of an infrastructure project. You also have to buy the materials, machinery, etc.

Second, it ignores the long-term benefits of spending on infrastructure and education.

Third, it tries to pretend that the jobs created only last a year.

illegals do pay taxes....as ive shown before, and many retirees do NOT....

large portions of those who dont pay are old or in college (or just out).

point is people may not pay a few years, and then pay the rest of their life.

Let's also not forget that Obama's plan is mostly *tax breaks*, which Republicans are supposed to like.
