You read that right - although it might not have occurred to Mississippians just yet what they are doing! Maybe it has - that would be even more scary. If this is an example of how great "state rights" can be - the whole country will be dragged back several centuries. If we continue to let the ignorant legislate, America will be dragged back to the dark ages! Mississippi 'Personhood' Law Could Ban Abortions And Birth Control Mississippi voters will be allowed to decide on a ballot measure that defines "personhood" from the moment of fertilization, the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled last week. The measure could potentially outlaw abortions, birth control, in vitro fertilization and stem cell research across the state. Abortion-rights advocates say they worry that the language of the initiative is so broad and vague that its effects could go far beyond outlawing abortion. The measure could be interpreted to outlaw the birth control pill, for instance, because the pill can sometimes prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. They also say the measure could outlaw in vitro fertilization, stem cell research and emergency contraception for rape victims, as well as discourage doctors from performing a lifesaving miscarriage treatment when a woman is suffering from potentially-fatal pregnancy complications. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/12/mississippi-personhood-law-abortions_n_959100.html
LOL..America is already being dragged into immorality in some states, (Ma and NY for example), by NOT allowing the people to have a say. We really should pick some kind of standard. Either the people vote on issues or the government slams down what it thinks is best.
Nothing says freedom and less government interference like using laws to force your moral proclivities on other people. Are the right-wingers going to set up a Central Office for the Combating of Homosexuality and Abortion next?
It is too broad of a law, it will not make it, but I do agree it is a vieled attempt at anti abortion.
The point of States Rights is to avoid exactly what you are worried about. If Mississippi adopts this and it is held as Constructional, it does not mean every other State in the Union has to follow suit. However without states’ rights, if the Feds adopted a similar law and it was held to be Constitutional, then every state would have to follow the law. If it passes and you don't like it, don't go to Mississippi to get your freak on.
Agreed. They often make me hate humanity due to their sheer stupidity. I don't understand what the hell is wrong with people sometimes. I'm curious how true this is though. Is the state really going to ban birth control? It's not that I don't think they would; in fact I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. That said I don't know if people would really push such stupidity in this day in age. Then again AZ passed a law which would require US citizens to prove their citizenship to police or face deportation, so it's clear the right doesn't give a (*)(*)(*)(*) about things like liberty and freedom. They don't give a rats ass who they screw over so long as either America or Jesus 'wins' through oppression.

Oh, I'm sure you are ready to back up your statement with facts - or shall we consider it more of that baseless, conservative rhetoric?
I don't think that was the intent, however, the way it is written it could be stretched to that. Whoever drew up this bill didn't know the first thing about laws and how they work - the people, thinking they are just outlawing abortion (which they can't, because it is Federal law), will vote for it. The Republican party has been busy at work trying to undo Roe v Wade and have forgotten the things that are hurting the country, like no jobs. They've not initiated a single job's bill, but have managed to pass 9 abortion bills. They are coming up with bizarre bills that infringe on our rights - all the time claiming they want government to be inconsequential in our lives - liars! Unable to ban abortion, states have pioneered dozens of tactics to constrict access to it -- from requiring minors to seek a parents consent for an abortion to regulating the size of doorways in clinics that perform the procedure. http://www.stateline.org/live/details/story?contentId=121780 You got that right. You would think that some of these conservatives are smart enough to see through it, but obviously they aren't, can't or won't.
Thanks for showing the ignorance on some on the right. Obama is a Christian. Why on earth Christian people would claim he isn't is either because they are racist or they don't know Christianity. And, by the way, your post has nothing to do with the OP, thanks for trying to derail it - typical conservative tactic.
That's funny - the "red" states get much more money from the government than the "blue" states, so I guess they are either faking it or they are really worse of than California. http://taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_blog/2004/09/red_states_feed.html
Wow! That is scary - Mississippi not using contraceptives - the country being flooded with more inane people than what we already have.
Birth control is PRIOR to conception, so please explain ow it "could be banned", or is that just more madeup Leftninny bullcrap? The law refers to FETUSES, not zygotes. Try again. No one needs to "ban" ESC research; the market is already de facto doing just that, due to its unending medical failures.
You are right, it is too broad of a law, and when polled in other states it failed. Mississippi shows more people in favor of this law than those that are against it. Although a similar ballot measure has failed twice in Colorado, Mason is optimistic about success in Mississippi. Around 80 percent of the electorate is pro-life, Mason said. The only way we could see defeat in Mississippi is if folks just sit at home and do nothing. Though it was among the losing parties at the Mississippi Supreme Court, the Center for Reproductive Rights believes it will ultimately prevail. It is urging voters to defeat the Personhood Amendment and warning, This measure should raise all kinds of alarms. Should voters approve the measure, legal fights are guaranteed and opponents feel confident the content of the amendment will not survive legal scrutiny. Supporters plan to forge ahead. They hope to have Personhood Amendments on at least a dozen state ballots by Election Day 2012. http://www.personhoodusa.com/category/states/mississippi For those who claim they are against big government and government intruding in their lives, this is a fine example of how they don't mind wasting tax payer's money on such frivolous bills.
I'm sure most of the people in Mississippi believe that too. A woman who is not planning a pregnancy and is on the "pill" could unknowingly cause a fertilized egg from being implanted, that is just how the pill works. No more in vitro - because most of the times more than one egg is fertilized, then they are left in freezers because the owners just want one child. The measure could be interpreted to outlaw the birth control pill, for instance, because the pill can sometimes prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. They also say the measure could outlaw in vitro fertilization, stem cell research and emergency contraception for rape victims, as well as discourage doctors from performing a lifesaving miscarriage treatment when a woman is suffering from potentially-fatal pregnancy complications. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/12/mississippi-personhood-law-abortions_n_959100.html That is what happens when people don't know what they are talking about. They embarrass themselves. Zygote - What Is a Zygote psychology.about.com/od/zindex/g/def_zygote.htmAfter a female egg is fertilized, it becomes known as a zygote... I suppose most conservatives would prefer for the embryos in freezers to just be dumped, or kept frozen forever - either way is more sensible for them than to use them to help a "human" that is already a person. The National Institutes of Health have since allowed for "funding for research using human embryonic stem cells that were derived from human embryos created by in vitro fertilization (IVF) for reproductive purposes and were no longer needed for that purpose." ttp://abcnews.go.com/Politics/judge-suspends-federal-embryonic-stem-cell-research/story?id=11463843
If it reads the article, its question is answered. "The measure could be interpreted to outlaw the birth control pill, for instance, because the pill can sometimes prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg." From WebMD: "The hormonal contraceptive usually stops the body from releasing an egg from the ovary. Hormonal contraceptives also change the cervical mucus to make it difficult for the sperm to find an egg. Hormonal contraceptives can also prevent pregnancy by making the lining of the womb inhospitable for implantation."
How is any of the OP a lie? Looks like every mentioned could happen. If you rule a fertilised egg as a person, then you must ban birth control, namely the pill, as it prevents a fertilised egg from reaching the uterus.
