"WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's jobs bill, facing a critical test in the Senate, appears likely to die at the hands of Republicans opposed to stimulus spending and a tax surcharge on millionaires."
    http://news.yahoo.com/senate-republicans-likely-kill-obama-jobs-bill-123504198.html

Since Democrats have a majority in the Senate, 53 senators, why is a failure to get 51 votes the fault of the Republicans. I realize the headline, "Senate Republicans likely to kill Obama jobs bill" is courtesy of the Obama Press Corp as represented by the Associated Press but surely they can't think Americans are too stupid to count.

"President Barack Obama’s jobs plan is at risk of getting less than 51 votes Tuesday evening in the Senate as a handful of politically vulnerable moderates hold out on the president’s signature economic proposal.

Adding to the uncertainty, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) who supports the proposal, may be a no-show due to a scheduling conflict, potentially leaving Democrats short of the symbolic simple majority on the jobs bill."

The coverage from Politico is a little more honest but it doesn't cover Rachel Maddow's Boy King sufficiently for the Associated Press.

I think Cantor announced that it was DOA over a week ago.

It didn't really matter what the details of the plan were......

You mean... it didn't really matter how many Democrats would vote against it?

It has been reported that Harry Reid does not have the votes in his own party!

The problem is that this job bill has no provisions for increasing the defense budget, banning abortion or making homosexuality illegal.

So naturally the "jobs-oriented" Republicans simply can't support it.

Exactly! Schumer came out today and said the Dems were going to break it up and do it piece by piece. How does that translate to the Republicans killing it in the Senate?

What I was saying is that the Republicans were voting as a contiguous block no matter what the content of the Obama plan was.

So that and a few independent thinking Dems is enough to kill the bill before it even arrived.

We've known this was coming for over a month......I'm not sure it qualifies as a surprise, let alone news at it's anticipation.

Evidently few here realize that the story here as Patrick presents it is not, "who will vote yea vs. nay", it's that the AP has already written the template for how the story will play in the media. And they wrote their headline as a blatant lie, but only right wing media will tell that truth.

The AP is as useful as the NYT. The story here is the AP, not the vote.

And will not allow the GOP to bring it to a quick vote, but you won't hear this in the Romney/Paul leg humpin media.

does that mean that it's possibly a bad bill as it sits whole?

Yes it did...Cantor said he wanted to take it apart and vote on parts of the bill....Obama's response....NO.

Hell, why doesn't Harry just bring it to the floor? He ought to have enough votes, no?

Face it, it's an embarrassing bill, no one wants to touch it!

Good, bury the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing waste of money that we don't have.

Bury the bill with Ted Kennedy.

The most embarrassing part is Barack flying all over the country touting the stupid bill when he hasn't even sold congress on it's merits. The man definitely thinks they'll do his bidding, no questions asked, doesn't he?

He's in for another big surprise.

Well, since pretty much everything requires a super majority to pass through the Senate these days and not all Democrats are left-leaning, I'm assuming that your statement is correct.

This is not a "Jobs Bill". It kills jobs and will necessarily raise the price of gas and oil by at least 2X. About 80% of the domestic oil in the U.S. comes from Independents who employ 4,000,000 people. This bill has a provision that will take away the tax write off for their investors that fund them. When an adventure is a bust, at least the investors get a write off. With this bill they lose that.

BIG OIL loves this provision as their write off was taken away in the 1970's. This only effects the small and mid-sized Independents. It will adversely effect 80% of the domestic oil in this country, give the BIG OIL Companies their long desired monopoly, and increase energy prices in enormous ways.

    ----

Most of the items in this bill are just more Obama / Democrat spending that will not produce jobs. It is a farce.

To support this bill is to support BIG OIL, more unemployment, and more crony capitalism (spending).

READ IT before you go taking DailyKos, ThinkProgress, and MediaMatters word for it. They are lying to you.

I thought this was supposed to be a bill created with bi-partisan support?
Looks to me as if its bi-partisan opposition :date:

I love the part where if you own a private business you are not allowed to discriminate against someone who has been on unemployment for 2yrs against the guy who's been on it for 2 months.

But, Obama really cares about private small business...what a joke!

STAY OUT OF IT! What gives the federal government the right to tell you who you can or cannot hire?
