U.S. to seek new Keystone route, delaying approval

The Obama administration plans to announce on Thursday it will explore a new route for a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline, delaying a final approval beyond the 2012 U.S. election, sources briefed on the matter said.

The decision would be a victory for environmentalists, many of whom oppose the pipeline, and a setback for TransCanada Corp, whose $7 billion Keystone XL project is seen as the most important North American oil pipeline plan for decades.

One source familiar with the matter said that studying a new route for the pipeline would likely take 12-18 months, putting a final decision after President Barack Obama's bid for re-election on November 6, 2012.

If the administration explores a new route, "it's a huge victory, and it would probably be the biggest environmental gift that President Barack Obama has given us," said Tony Iallonardo, a spokesman at the National Wildlife Federation.

Some of Obama's liberal supporters have strongly opposed the project and delaying a decision could allow Obama to avoid antagonizing environmentalists disillusioned with his progress on climate change. However, it could also open up a line of attack from Republicans who could argue that a delay will slow job growth.

Obama is playing to his base, while Obamanomics continues to ravage the nation. America needs drill, baby, drill not pander, baby, pander.

I fear campaign ad overload, where the GOP has such a wide variety of specific topics documented with which to illustrate what a monumental failure Obama has been, and that there just isn't enough airtime available to show it all ! :)

The incompetent must be put out, just like the trash.

The reason he's punting is because he cannot afford to alienate the radical environmetnal base prior to the election.

He wants to approve this pipeline. He has to approve this pipeline otherwise his entire 'creating jobs' spiel gets exposed as the lie that it really is. He can't argue against something that is guaranteed to create private sector jobs and with the lame "Well if we do it, we won't get off fossil fuels" argument.

That (*)(*)(*)(*) may fly at the local Sierra Club but it won't fly in a national election.

So he'll punt and approve it later when the shrill screams of the offended environmentalists can be ignored.

It's so obvious why he's not going to address this before the election and anyone with a brain can figure it out. I have to wonder how the left will be able to answer this one.

This is a toughy - which base do you appease or (*)(*)(*)(*) off? I guess he figures the environmentalists are more important to his re-election than those who are unemployed and might benefit from this.

And he's right to figure that... I'm sure he's not looking at a lot of votes from the unemployed in those particular states that the pipeline would cross. Most of those are red states, I believe.

Bingo. The people he is pissing off with this decision would not have voted for him anyway. This was a smart political move on his part. Too bad 20,000 + people won't get to work now, though.

But yes, Obama is for the poor, middle-class workers

Obama is only hurting himself since he won't have all those jobs created to brag about next year.

As the Democratic base becomes more and more radical every year, it will become more and more difficult for a Democratic president to get elected. They are moving so far from the mainstream that the Democratic president has to make these kinds of decisions because each faction of the Democrat party has its own agenda and demands different things from its candidates. Eventually the coalition that holds them all together will have to fray because at some point their candidates won't be able to please every member of the base.

This is where Cons have a good advantage, our ideology is singular and unified around a common goal. The Dems have wildly differing goals and needs and many of them are at odds with each other within the party.

Just one example, the immigrant lobby is incompatible with the union lobby because the immigrants lower wages and put union members out of work. Sure, you can try and unionize the immigrants but that is impossible when every year a new non-unionized workforce cross the border from Mexico.

Unfortunately Democrats are also successfully expanding the number of people who pay no taxes and expect a handout from the government.

We are almost at the tipping point of dictatorship by lazy deadbeat Obama voters.
