Chevy Volt fire explodes into federal investigation of electric car safety

The federal government is now investigating the safety of electric cars, and specifically, lithium-ion batteries, after a Chevy Volt caught fire three weeks after a side-impact crash test.

The wrecked Volt apparently caught fire in the parking lot of NHTSA's crash test facility in Wisconsin a full three weeks after the initial crash test. According to the exclusive Bloomberg story, the fire was large enough to burn vehicles parked in the vicinity of the car.

NHTSA is also apparently probing an incident involving a Volt catching on fire while charging. But the scope is not merely limited to General Motors. Regulators have approached all automakers, including GM, Nissan, and Ford — any that sell or have plans to sell vehicles with lithium-ion batteries — with questions about the batteries' fire risk, four people familiar with the inquiry said to Bloomberg.

We've reached out to NHTSA and GM for comment.

Good! I have similar concerns. I would like to see less inflammability in what are considered road-worthy vehicles.

What a surprise! You didn't read the rest of your own article, and therefore relayed a skewed message.

Yep. It was an isolated incident. So like most of your criticisms of the President, its irrational and based on propaganda rather than fact.

It is hardly news that Li-Ion batteries can ignite!

But gasoline cars can "fire up" too!

Thanks, you saved me the trouble of presenting a balanced view myself. Last week's horrific motorway pile-up showed just how violent petrol fires are.

Just one reason I like diesel engines. Toss a match into a bucket of diesel fuel...and it will go out!

Now that we've heard the typical deflections, is it possible to return to the issue of the batteries catching fire and what should be done about it? We get it, other materials are flammable. Thanks, deflectors.

Looks like an Obamamobile could burn your house down and kill your family, if you put it in the garage.

You know this car was developed before Obama. Don, your constant blaming everything on Obama that has nothing to do with him just looks silly.

LOL @ the eco-weenie zeolots defending their holy grail with "gasoline burns too" arguments....

Get in a fender bender with your Volt while leaving the OFM (organic food market).

Park the *now simmering* Volt in the garage.

Take the other car...the Prius... to the scheduled weekend of camping fun at the Hemp Festival.....

and return to the charred remains of your high tech, solar/geothermal/windmill powered home....

    :)

Considering only about eleven Volts have been sold, I doubt it. :)

Do you have a smoke detector in your garage? Could you hear it from the other side of the house?

Wait, you are a Brit, so you probably don't have a master bedroom, great room, two car garage, and kitchen/dinning room like a middle-class American.

I thought it was a key part of Obama's failed green energy plan with Gov't Motors?

Yeah it could. If you got into a major accident and decided to do nothing about it for weeks.

You should really read the whole article before trying to sound more intelligent than someone else.

Poor Bigoil...like the horse and buggy & harness people at the turn of the 20th Century, they spread rumor after rumor how the new method of getting around was "dangerous".

They were right of course but it didn't stop a thing. Progress marched forward. New innovations were created for the automobile making it safer and still turning the backs on old Trigger and the family buggy. It turns out people needed to get around faster then. Today people want to get around spending less at the pump. Necessity is the mother of invention.

The only solution is for BigOil to drop their prices at the pump. Poor Bigoil...they're on the way out.

There is no evidence yet that charging electric ObamaMobiles at home represents a fire hazard but it is a definite possibility.

I suppose if the government shot all the horses in a effort to force citizens to buy a car when the cars were not adequately developed yet then that generation would have objected too.

Stupidity is the same in any age.

I would bet serious money that was an improperly-installed charger and/or under-spec'd wiring.

No, we have dining rooms. I have no idea what 'dinning' is. I don't own a car so have no need for a garage. I also have a seperate kitchen and dining room. I have no idea what a 'great room' is. I guess that's an American affectation like 'powder room'. (We don't go in for prissy similes; a toilet is a toilet, and a bathroom has a bath in it).
I live alone and thus have no need of more than the two bedrooms I have. I forgot; I also built a small house in my garden for guests.

It's a pity that your socialist country has so limited you.

Limited me to what? On the contrary we don't feel the need for grotesquely gratuitous displays of 'I've got', nor the pressures of trying to keep up with the Jones' latest ride-on lawn mower.

My country has had a conservative government since May 2010. Do try to keep up.

Meh, nothing is perfect. Seems better placement of the battery to give more "cushion" in the event of a crash might fix it.

I've seen first hand, somones Volvo turn into a flaming comet...and noones claiming Volvos are unsafe.

Man cannot make perfection in anything.
