    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/14/us/felons-finding-it-easy-to-regain-gun-rights.html

This is one example where the conservative philosophy of individual states rights has completely dropped the ball and a perfect example of why we need 1 uniform federal standard to approaching the rights of felons to get access to guns.

Dasein, it's a moot point because you believe all power resides with the elites in Washington or should. The article had precious little substantive information and is a great example of using one isolated case to try and mount a universal argument. Pitiful but it is the NYT. One wouldn't expect better, would one?

Question: Dasein, which citizens should have a right to bear arms?

I agree that it should be universal that felons cannot own or possess firearms...

Someone definitely dropped the ball here...

In Chicago, if you accidentally recorded someone, its a felony -- you shouldn't lose your rights for that. In some states, if you had sex when you were 15 and your gf is 14, it was/is a felony. You shouldn't lose your 2nd amendment rights because of certain felonies. Blanket statements suck.

I'm sure that exceptions can be made...

    Anyway, felons shouldn't have guns...

"Erik Zettergren originally lost his gun rights in 1987 because of a felony conviction for dealing marijuana."

Clearly people who are "dealing marijuana" are violent criminals.

While I'm boggled that someone with multiple felony convictions, who friends describe as violent gets his gun rights restored....the bigger part of me wonders how many felony convictions you can get and still be out of jail. Perhaps we need to stop letting them out.

In California, it is near impossible to get a Concealed Carry Permit. The ruling by the liberal judge that heard the case is that it was alright to deny the permits because.... hey... you can open carry in California. Well... last month the liberals and Jerry Brown passed a new law taking away our rights to open carry.

    Now what?

They have plenty of background checks. There is no reason why a VIOLENT FELON should be having gun rights.

Now that is really silly. I bet a million $ you don't even know the legal defintion of a felony. It is - "Any crime for which the maximum penalty is a year or more in prison".

That's an extremely low bar. Many felons never do a day in prison. Should people lose constitutional rights for a crime that minor?

No, it's the same conversation and the basis for the link in the OP. This man was dealing marijuana which is a felony and his 2nd Amendment rights were taken away. He appealed and got them back. So should felons be denied their 2nd Amendment rights in perpetuity?

Hell - martha stewart is a felon. So is pete rose. Why should they lose the right to self-protection for their minor crimes???

The media has brainwashed people into thinking felons are "like murderers and rapists". Another lie but the idiot american believes it.

You mean some people in the government have finally figured out what "Shall Not Be Infringed" means? Amazing it only took them how long? If people don't like the idea of felons having guns, fix it the right way and Amend the Constitution, while you are at it, add in that private citizens can't own Weapons of Mass Destruction and other military grade hardware. Until then, the people should not suffer limitations on their rights by activist judges when the proper method and solution are available.

You prove time & time again that you know nothing about anything...

See above... the legal definition for a felony is not as general as you seem to think it is...

    Read for yourself.
If you are convicted of a felony, you lose your right to carry firearms, plain & simple...

Now whether some things that are felonies should be considered such is another discussion...

But a felon should not be allowed to carry a weapon...

The article you quoted gave this definition of a felony - "In general, a felony is an offense for which a sentence to a term of imprisonment in excess of one year is authorized."

And that is just what i said. <<< MOD EDIT: OFF TOPIC/INSULT >>>

. . . He appealed, got them back, and then murdered someone and hid the body. Just to be clear.

To answer the question. Yes. I have no problem with that. Felons also lose their right to vote.

You commit a felony you lose certain rights -- I have no problem with that. Let them get some mace or a taser.

Anyway, if you can't follow the law, then you give up rights...

    Ask anyone in prison...

I don't think weed should be illegal, but, since it is, I leave it alone...

    It's really easy...

I prefer not to follow laws blindly. If a law is unjust, it should be changed. Unfortunately, true justice is never easy.

In general, but there are exceptions...

Anyway, if something is illegal, like weed, stay away from it, and you stay out of trouble, and avoid felony convictions...

    Very easy concept...

If you get convicted of a felony, you lose certain rights...

And I don't feel sorry for them...

Then you get the law changed...

    Or try to...

Just blatantly disregarding it is stupid...

Again you lie. Felons lose the right to vote in some states but in most states they do not.
