If Obama were to do this, our country would be in great peril for our national security would be at dire risks. Right now, Russia and China are having massive buildups to their military hardware. They are developing at a rapid pace new weapons platforms that would pose a threat to our vital interests around the globe. I am not for reducing our Air Force down to the smallest level ever as well as lower the number of Naval vessels to WW1 levels in 1915 of 147 ships when we now have 436 ships. I believe by doing this, Obama would send a signal to our adversaries that our nation is weak and they would probably perceive it that way. In reality, we would definitely be weaker. This is a foolish move if it happens. These cuts was determined when the Super Committee was giving the task of coming up with a solution to reduce our spending and our deficit. Democrats walked out the other day rejecting the Republicans fair proposal putting our national security at serious risk. In a statement, John McCain said the automatic cuts "would set off a swift decline of the United States as the world's leading military power. ... This is not an outcome that we can live with, and it is certainly not one that we should impose on ourselves. The sequester is a threat to the national security interests of the United States, and it should not be allowed to occur." I agree. We should never put our status as the worlds superpower in jeopardy and should instead be on a constant buildup of technological advance weapons systems that no country can rival.

The number of U.S. ground forces would drop to levels not seen since 1940, the Navy would drop to the smallest number of ships since 1915 and the Air Force would be the smallest ever, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in warning Congress of the dire implications of deeper defense cuts.

You don't need any of that crap. Put a committee together and if a problem/threat should arise vote and nuke.
Let the meatheads come back to your home and secure the borders.Sell the military "scrap" to China.

Wait a minute we forgot that Obama and the Democrats have already used cuts to the military to fund Obama-Care. The Democrats didn't worry about the money then so why now?

I think it is time that our military generals and admirals enforce the part of their Oath of Office which states that they defend our country from all enemies "both foreign and domestic", stage a military coup, and send these enemies of the United States that currently reside in Congress and the White House off to Gitmo in handcuffs or plastic cable zip ties. Then spend the next 10 or 20 years trying to decide whether these domestic enemies of the United States from Congress and the White House should stand trial in a civilian court of law or in a military tribunal.

This reminds me of the situation in the Pacific in the 1930's.

I think the Chinese menace is subtle.

They are not going to station troops in the US or Britain and demand an opium concession like the great powers did to them in the 1800's and up to WWII.

But given an economic and military superiority over other counties the Chinese will use it.

The only country I see exhibiting that behaviour is America.

    Oh Gawd don't ask them!
They'll just go out and invent a new enemy.
Given half a friggin' chance these yahoos would declare war on China.

Why does Obama want to lay off military members? Where is the outrage?

Perhaps because they're redundant and not needed? If your office is over-staffed and costing you money why would you keep non-productive staff on the payroll?

What about their right to work? Why is Obama against giving Americans jobs?

Oh get over it. You delegitimize every single American national security position as if we should just adopt the paper tiger military of Europe and turn to appeasement policies.

You and the rest of Europe are incapable of defending yourselves properly, as was made glaringly obvious by the Libya adventure.

If our military is so big, it's because most of the world demands our protection!

Let them get another job. That's what people do when they leave the military, and it isn't the responsibility of the government to find them work. Isn't 'personal responsibility' the mantra I keep hearing from you conservatives?

The Brits are so close to the bottom now that Chinese domination might be an improvement.

But in America our intention is to remain independent.

WTF are you on about? How was Libya evidence of Europe not being able to protect itself?
Oh, and by the way, Britain is a nuclear power and we're perfectly capable of protecting ourselves.

They are no more a special case, nor are they any less vulnerable to redundancy than any civilian. Besides aren't you conservatives always complaining about bloated big government and too many civil servants? The military are employees of the government. I would have thought you'd be pleased at the news.

The idea that having nuclear weapons somehow makes you invincible from attack is asanine.

All China has to do is blockade any and all ships bound to/from the UK anywhere in the pacific and your economy would crash within weeks. That is a national security threat.

At some point in time the Chinese would not even have to do that.

They could use their economic superiority to force the rest of the world to stop doing business with the UK.

After a few weeks the Brits would be as docile as little lambs and do anything the Chinese tell them to do.
