The US is expected to eventually base 25,000 US Marines in rotation at a current Australian military base outside Darwin.

The US originally wanted to build a base but the Australian government refused.

No problem. We'll expand the current base to accomodate our Marines.

Like the day they arrive. The infusion of American dollars into the local economy and the civilian jobs created will be a big boost to Darwin's economy.

Why? The only country that has the projection power to invade us is the one being invited in.

Exactly right, Im at a loss to understand what Gillard is attempting to acheive by this.

The US want it, its got nothing to do with anything Gillard wants for Australia other then a boost to NT business, and the extra protection it might provide (whilst also becoming a bigger target). This is a case of bending over to the US, and its the ALP doing it LOL. Wheres Bob Brown and his strong anti-US sentiment!?

It won't be long before China will be knocking on your door, and they won't want to play nice.

Closer security ties to the USA for the day when China goes apestuff and tries to conquer your part of the world. But hey, you might be able to appease them. You wont' like the terms though.

Because they lack the military ability to do so. China's military is an internal suppression force, not a projection force.

Regardless, anyone with a few brain cells knows the prospect is ridiculously unlikely, despite which ww2 proved 1 australian soldier is roughly equal to 10 of any other countries. The Chinese are aware of history even if you arent.

You of course have a source that backs up your assertion that 1 Aussie is comparable to 10 soldiers from any other nation?

That must be why we're positioning 25,000 US Marines on the north coast of Australia. So that you can protect us.

Really? Then why do they have a blue water navy including an aircraft carrier and long range strategic bombers and troop carrying aircraft?

The big problem with that is their notorious reluctance to ever leave again.

Looks like we'll be basing B-52 bombers near Darwin too.

Actually that seems to be exactly what the article posted is saying.

Yeah, I'm sure China bringing 26 aircraft to Australia will be totally terrifying.

I frankly don't see the real benefit to either country, other than increased cooperation.

The question I would have is this cost neutral? If it is no more or less costly than positioning in Guam or Japan, then fine.

Another typical waste of US Taxpayer dollars. I'm sure the Australian's are quite capable of defending themselves. Just another example of Amercia sticking its nose where it doesn't belong.

A Darwin based MAGTF is not going to do much to counter Chinese Naval intimidation...compared to what it cannot already achieve today (since they forward deploy afloat already). This is purely about giving the US a rebalanced posture for Asia. It is Juliar bending over to Obama and I'm suprised the ALP did it, that Bob Brown isnt pooing himself. Im not against it, but I hate how the media reacts so differently depending on who is in power. If the Libs had done this we'd have Bob Brown tieing himself to the roof of parliement house and the media would be creating a frenzy and panic about the US making our kangaroos and native plants a target.

The real beneficiaries of this new basing arrangement will be the women of Australia who will now have improved opportunities for personal satisfaction.
