Just when you thought today's colleges couldn't become even more of a joke than they already are, Georgetown University is now offering a course on Jay-Z's "lyrical prowess". Just another lame attempt to legitimize this crap and make it even more mainstream.

    Some of Jay-Z's "lyrical prowess":

And people wonder why the U.S. is falling behind.

They're private. They can teach whatever they want to. If they were a public school, there would understandably be more of an outcry.

    Whatever.

I think Jay-Z is a genius, but to each his own.

How is Jay Z's story any different than lets say the Kennedys. Shouldn't Jay Z be someone young people should emulate.

Sorry brutha, but as far as I'm concerned, this racist coon needs to back up into the trees in Africa where he belongs.

People that bash hip hop are the same ones who don't listen to it. I'm not talking about the no talent hacks, I'm talking about the rappers who can create lyrics that tell a story, lines that have multiple meanings, metaphors, double entendres, etc.

Hip Hop is modern day poetry, and an integral part of American urban culture.

Not surprised its being taught in schools.

Sorry Zero, but if you can't quote Jay-Z when he uses the N-word like (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) or (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) without the PF.com censor kicking in, then there isn't much use for the so-called "lyrical value" around here, is there?

Yes, if you bother to focus on something other than "(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)."

Oh really? In my eyes, you're a (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*). You're oppressed by the evil white man (me) because I constantly deride your idiotic statements. Now, wouldn't you feel insulted by my "racist" statements? Or would you consider my statements as "art"?

I wouldn't go that far. He's just a rapper. A really good rapper, but not someone you should necessarily emulate.

Anything you say usually offends me for various reasons, but they are artists. I can't force you to actually look at the lyrics of those who are really talented. You can hate on it all you want but you're just ignorant on the subject, as you are on so many others.

Actually rappers are poets and poetry is part of every literature curriculum. There were folks up in arms about this same thing with Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss and if you go back far enough Frost.

Sorry but this is a tempest in a teacup....

and the individual should be able to purchase it if he desires.
Hope it helps 'em get a job, or he'll be wasting a whole bunch of cabbage.

No, I just love holier-than-though types like yourself when you make hypocritical statements like the one that you just made, and vainly attempt to back them up with even more hypocrisy. How is it any more "artful" when I say (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) and when Jay-Z says (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)? Please explain this to the rest of the class.

Making things rhyme does not make you a poet.

I rarely like poetry that rhymes actually.

I stopped listening to rap after Dre's Chronic album.

Someone who is a fan, please publish the lyrics of something you find profound, or at least thought provoking. I am not going to critique, I would just like to make an informed opinion.

I ignored your statement because it was stupid. It's more artful because he's good at what he does. How about you try to make lyrics like he and others can? It's not that he says "(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)," it's much more about everything else a good rapper says. Eminem never says it and he's one of the best.

Because Jay-Z incorporates the word into some kind of relevant and musical narrative.

Art doesn't have to be consistent or logical, just expressive.

Just rhyming in itself is not that hard, it's telling a story, stringing different lines together through metaphors, multiple meanings, etc. that set one apart from the rest.
