Obama sees 'make or break' time for middle class

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. (AP) -- President Barack Obama delivered a sweeping indictment of economic inequality in the U.S. on Tuesday as he summoned the memory of President Theodore Roosevelt and pledged to fight for fairness at a "make or break moment for the middle class."

Only a month before Republican voters begin choosing a presidential nominee, Obama traveled to small-town Osawatomie, Kan., where Roosevelt delivered his "New Nationalism" address in 1910, to embrace the progressive reformer's calls for a "square deal" for regular Americans.

Obama warned of the unraveling of the American dream, and called for giving hurting middle-class workers a fair shake and restoring financial security - themes he's certain to return to throughout the 2012 campaign.

"This isn't just another political debate. This is the defining issue of our time. This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class, and all those who are fighting to get into the middle class," Obama told a crowd in the Osawatomie High School gym, where red, white and blue bunting lined the bleachers.

"Because at stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home, and secure their retirement," he said.

Taking aim at Republicans, Obama said: "Their philosophy is simple: we are better off when everyone is left to fend for themselves and play by their own rules. Well, I'm here to say they are wrong."

Obama's speech sounded the theme of inequality of income and opportunity, which the White House sees as a major force in current politics, but it was short on new ideas or specifics for pulling the country out of its economic doldrums

In a way, he is right. His re-election would break the middle class. The republic could not handle another four years of Obama.

Obama's plan is working. He's created chaos. He's managed to bury us in dept, alienate our allies, openly use tax payer money to empower unions & the socialist workers party, evil-ize financial success, all while dividing the nation like never before. Anyone who believes OWS was a spontaneous movement is clueless. It's just what Obama and his ilk had envisioned, and thanks to the DNC, colleges and unions, implement.

Has Obama ever had a positive word about the foundation principles this nation was built on? EVER? Has he ever given a speech which does not blame, accuse, slander or reprimand someone else for the state of the nation? I mean, come on! He's been president for nearly 3 years and you'd think he's running for his first term. What a POS.

Make or break? His policies already broke them.

He's right.. a democratic republic can't work without a middle class.

That's been the problem in the Bananna Republics and in Africa and parts of the Arab world.

Crony Capitalism means the death of the middle class.

Today you’ve got an emerging generation of young people who have a perspective that’s different from the one that politicians and many industry leaders have,’ James said. ‘They have a more balanced view. Just making money, in order simply to give it away, is out of date. There’s a massive generational shift occurring that will blur the distinction between doing good and doing business.’

Our social and environmental risk analysis at Santander has shown that, in the long run, companies with adequate environmental policies, well-defined labor relations and a balanced relationship with the community end up achieving more consistent financial results and establishing a more attractive brand name. It is in the company’s own interest to adopt corporate governance policies in line with the development of the country.’

Maybe he should have thought about the negative effects of crony capitalism before he jumped in bed with people like Solyndra... I notice he failed to mention such a thing in his little speech.

Can you tell me what is the difference between Bush and Obama?

P.S. please don't tell me he is illegal commie-nazi-socialist who wants to kill my grandma via his Obamacare.

Granted that was a mistake, but not as big a mistake as ENRON.. This problem isn't new.

Why do you think a company like Panasonic had 26 US operations 12 years ago and now has six?

Chris Christie gets it, but neither the Republicans or the Democrats will get off their butts and make the essential changes that are neccesary.

Look at Gingrich.. one day he says Freddie Mac and Fannie mae bosses should go to jail, the next he says that he got $30,000 a month from them but he wasn't a lobbyist.

Sorry Barack, we are too busy clinging to our guns and religion.

This was the single most divisive speech that I have heard out of a Presidents mouth in my lifetime. The jerk had enough Straw Men that we should alert the Marshall due to the fire hazard.

    He is no leader.

The clueless fraud offers nothing but more big government spending, more big government control over the private sector, higher taxes to pay for it all....and the ever present dependency pimping, class warfare narrative...'If you vote for them, Big Papa Fed won't be here to wipe your nose'....

That folks have devolved to a state where they actually buy what this scumbag is selling astonishes me.

I don't know which I hate more, him or them.

ENRON? What a pathetic attempt to deflect from the current administration and its failures. How people can't see this guy as the hypocrite he is, is utterly mind boggling.

ATM machines put travel agents out of business...LMFAO!!!

Another highlight was of course his class warfare, pitting the poorer against the rich, sighting examples of CEO pay and employee pay....forgetting I guess how much the Washington socialist cronies on both sides of the isle have made with insider trading deals, land deals, mortgage deals and how congress even beats people like Warren Buffett and George Soros when it comes to making money in the stock market. Soros's averages about 8%...congress...............12%!!!

Gee, how do you think they do that???

I take it that you have not believed any of the unemployment figures since 2006.. Am I correct?

And you probably are unaware of housing foreclosures.

Gingrich says that the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bosses should go to jail.. and that he took $30,000 a month from them for 8 years as an historic advisor.

    wake up....

Then we have this, which is all about free education for everyone...can someone say Hitler's Germany???

It starts by making education a national mission - government and businesses; parents and citizens. In this economy, a higher education is the surest route to the middle class. The unemployment rate for Americans with a college degree or more is about half the national average. Their income is twice as high as those who don’t have a high school diploma. We shouldn’t be laying off good teachers right now - we should be hiring them. We shouldn’t be expecting less of our schools - we should be demanding more. We shouldn’t be making it harder to afford college - we should be a country where everyone has the chance to go.

I thought we all had THE CHANCE to go??? When did that change.

Do you have any kids in college?

Has your home lost 40% of its value?

I am curious as to whether or not you have had a raise in the past ten years... or a promotion.

Just generic information.. I am not trying to find out who you are.

Whomever Big Fed arbitrarily lauds favor upon, turns a blind eye towards, "exempts", or decides to prosecute seems to be the reality of modern "capitalism"....

After three years of pointed failure, 1.5 trillion dollar deficits and 5 trillion more added to the debt, PLEASE tell me you're not suggesting big government, tax, spend and redistribute collectivists, and that duplicitous mother(*)(*)(*)(*)er Obama are STILL the key to alleviating the selectively applied stranglehold big government has placed our economic engine.

    Please?
