Unlike Christians in Iraq. Muslims are far less likely to be killed by Insurgents, why was this man given refugee status? Why does the US allow these people in who are prone to kill Americans on home and foreign soil?

Time to revamp the refugee rules to ensure no new barbarians enter the US.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An Iraqi living in Kentucky pleaded guilty on Friday to charges that he tried to kill U.S. soldiers in Iraq, aided al Qaeda operatives there and taught how to make roadside bombs, the Justice Department said.

Waad Ramadan Alwan, 30, pleaded guilty to a 23-count indictment in a federal court in Kentucky - a case that drew harsh criticism from Republicans in the U.S. Congress who argued that such terrorism suspects should be tried in military courts at the American military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Obama administration rebuffed such demands, countering that federal courts also can handle major terrorism cases.

"The successful investigation, arrest, interrogation and prosecution of Mr. Alwan demonstrates the effectiveness of our intelligence and law enforcement authorities in bringing terrorists to justice," Lisa Monaco, the head of the Justice Department's national security division, said in a statement.

Alwan was accused of taking part in roadside bomb attacks on U.S. troops between 2003 and 2006, linked in one such instance by fingerprints obtained by U.S. forces from a device that did not detonate.

The FBI started investigating him in September 2009 and nearly a year later began using a confidential source to talk with him about his activities in Iraq, which allegedly included using improvised explosive devices, known as IEDs, and sniper rifles to target U.S. troops.

During conversations with the source, Alwan said he worked at a power plant but often hid roadside bombs, according to court papers filed earlier this year. He also allegedly boasted of attacking Hummers and Bradley fighting vehicles.

He and a second Iraqi, Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, also were charged for allegedly trying to provide support and weapons to an al Qaeda affiliate in Iraq in a sting operation subsequently run by U.S. authorities.

Hammadi has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The two Iraqis entered the United States in 2009 after receiving refugee status. They were arrested in May in their hometown of Bowling Green, Kentucky.

New IED bomb record set in Afghanistan...

IED attacks in Afghanistan set record
25 Jan.`12 - Attacks with makeshift bombs hit a record high of more than 16,000 in Afghanistan in the past year, and the increasing harm they cause to Afghan civilians indicates insurgents may lack strong leadership, military officials say.

The number of improvised explosive devices that were cleared or detonated rose to 16,554 from 15,225, an increase of 9%, according to data obtained by USA TODAY. In 2009, total IED "events," as they are known, came to 9,304. Insurgent reliance on IEDs as their No. 1 weapon meant a rise in concussions and severe wounds to U.S. servicemembers who have been operating on foot to root out Taliban fighters in remote areas. Civilians were increasingly becoming the main victims. The number of Afghans killed or wounded by IEDs jumped 10% in 2011, compared with 2010, according to figures released by the military command in Kabul. The bombs account for 60% of all civilian casualties, which totaled more than 4,000 killed or wounded in 2011. Insurgents caused more than 85% of those casualties.

The International Stability Assistance Force, which oversees coalition military operations, attributed the spike in civilian casualties to the increasing lack of control insurgent leaders have on their forces. "Despite orders from Mullah Omar to quit harming civilians, we saw increased use of IEDs harming Afghan adults and children," Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, an ISAF spokesman said, referring to Mohammed Omar, the leader of the Taliban. "If insurgencies are about winning the support or at least the acquiescence of the local population, this is a concerning trend for the Taliban," said Seth Jones, an expert on Afghanistan at the RAND Corp., a think tank.

The leaky border with Pakistan remains a problem, according to the Pentagon's Joint IED Defeat Organization, or JIEDDO, the Pentagon's lead agency for combating makeshift bombs. Pakistan is the source for 80% of the fertilizer-based homemade bombs in Afghanistan, JIEDDO says. Those bombs cause 90% of U.S. casualties. Jones said IEDs will continue to plague the coalition and civilians. "This is likely due to the ability of insurgents to import IED materials, including triggering devices and ammonium nitrate, from Pakistan," he said. Sen. Robert Casey, D-Pa., has pushed Pakistani officials to stem the flow of bombmaking materials. There has been progress, including the formation of counter-IED teams in Pakistan. But Casey said Wednesday he was "not satisfied" enough was being done to secure the border.

November 30, 2015 -- After visiting Syrian refugees in Jordan, presidential candidate Ben Carson said Sunday that President Obamas plan to bring them into the United States was just a band aid solution, and suggested that the U.S. should do more to help Jordan with its on-going humanitarian efforts instead. If we bring 10,000 or 25,000 of them to the United States, that's not solving a problem, Carson told Face the Nation host John Dickerson. That's a little band-aid that makes a few people say, Hey, we're good guys. That's not what we want to do.

Carson told Dickerson that Syrian refugees told him that their primary interest was to go back to Syria rather than coming to the United States. Dr. Carson, I want to ask you. You visited a Syrian refugee camp. What did you learn there? Dickerson asked. Well, first of all, Carson responded, I was very impressed by the outpouring of humanitarian effort on behalf of the Jordanians. This has been going on for many decades. But they have really reached out to the Syrians in a very big way. And I had an opportunity to talk with many of the Syrians. And that was very eye-opening, asking them, what is their desire, what is their main desire? And their main desire is to be repatriated in their homeland.

Carson also reported that the refugees told him the U.S. could provide assistance by supporting existing relief efforts in Jordan. And I said, what kinds of things could a nation like United States do to help? And there was a pretty uniform answer on that, Carson said. And that was, they can support the efforts of the Jordanians. The Jordanians have done a yeoman's job in terms of putting up these camps, but the reason that the camps are not full is because they are not supported by the international community. It seems like everybody in the international community is spending more time saying, how can we bring refugees here, rather than how can we support a facility that is already in place that the refugees are finding perfectly fine when it's adequately funded? Carson explained.

Dickerson then asked him, So, your assessment visiting there is that Jordan could take all the refugees; it's just a matter of getting more financial resources? I think Jordan could take a lot more of the refugees than they're taking right now, Carson replied. I don't see any reason, quite frankly, that some of the other nations in the area shouldn't also be asked to do it, so that you don't have to go through a big cultural change with them. And in terms of money, you know, when I looked at the refugee camps in Jordan, there's about a $3 billion shortfall annually. That's how much money we spent last year on Halloween candy. Is it something that can be done? So, make the link between Halloween and the refugees for me. Are you talking about a national fundraising drive or? Dickerson asked. I talked about in terms of the amount of money that it would take to fund the shortfall, Carson explained. Our country has done a great job in terms of providing support. There's no question about that. But I believe that the entire international community could easily make up that $3 billion shortfall. My point in comparing it to Halloween candy is to say that this is not a big deal.

The Paris terror attacks, which killed 130 people and were claimed by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS/ISIL), brought fresh scrutiny onto the issue of refugees from the Syrian conflict, amid concerns the terrorist group was seeking to infiltrate Western countries through refugee settlement programs. The Refugee Processing Center admission figures since the attacks in Paris continue a trend evident since the start of the current fiscal year, on October 1. President Obama plans to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees in the U.S. during fiscal year 2016.

Since FY2016 began two months ago, 423 Syrian refugees have been admitted into the U.S., of whom 418 (98.8 percent) were Sunni Muslims. The remaining five (1.2 percent) were Christians three Catholic, one Orthodox and one simply described as Christian. One hundred and eleven of them (26 percent) are men aged between 14 and 50.

February 03, 2016 A senior Obama administration official told lawmakers on Capitol Hill Wednesday that accepting Syrian refugees into the United States actually increases U.S. security.

In a clash with House Republicans at a Wednesday hearing over accepting Iraqi and Syrian refugees, U.S. Citizenship and Immigrations Services Director Leon Rodriguez delivered a strong defense of the Syrian Resettlement program. Rodriguez said he believes it boosts U.S national security to offer shelter to victims of Islamic State terror because it destroys the groups narrative that the West is against Islam. Several Republican members of the House Homeland Security Committee had expressed security concerns, saying their states do not want to admit refugees from war zones in the Middle East who have not been vetted.

Republican Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul cited recent arrests and the mass shooting in San Bernardino in December: Just last month, the FBI arrested two Iraqis in the United States on terror-related charges. Both were inspired by ISIS, one had traveled to Syria, and both had entered our country as refugees. In December, two ISIS fanatics in San Bernardino launched a heinous attack that left 14 dead and 22 wounded. One of these terrorists came into the United States already radicalized on a fiancé visa.

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security explained that refugees admitted into the U.S. from Iraq and Syria face a thorough screening process that takes an average of 18-24 months. The officials said about 2,000 Syrians have been admitted to the U.S. since the brutal conflict in Syria began. Thirty Syrians were denied acceptance outright and several hundred are on hold pending further investigation.

December 26, 2016 The push to restrict refugee resettlements and immigration in the U.S. that figured so prominently in Donald Trump's election is now headed to states that are preparing to convene their legislative sessions early next year, immigration advocates said.

In Montana, which took in just nine refugee families from January to early December, about a dozen bill requests related to refugees, immigration and terrorism have been filed ahead of next month's session. The measures include requiring resettlement agencies to carry insurance that would defray the cost of prosecuting refugees who commit violent crimes and allowing towns and cities to request a moratorium on resettlements in their communities.

Refugee rights advocates say those measures are a sign of what is to come as the anti-refugee rhetoric that featured prominently in the presidential election spills over to statehouses and local governments. "It's pretty widely known that this is going to be a hard year for those of us who are seeking to protect the rights of refugees and immigrants,'' said S.K. Rossi, advocacy and policy director for the ACLU of Montana. The president-elect campaigned on building a border wall with Mexico to stop illegal immigration, deporting immigrants who are in the nation illegally and halting the resettlement of refugees to strengthen the federal program that vets them.

Some down-ticket conservative candidates took Trump's cue and integrated the anti-refugee platform into their campaigns. Montana Rep. Ryan Zinke, for example, spoke multiple times about the possibility of child terrorists slipping into the U.S. Empowered by the issue's prominence, anti-immigrant groups have state and local governments in their sights as targets to push restrictive measures in addition to whatever changes may happen at the federal level, said Michele McKenzie, deputy director of the Minneapolis organization The Advocates for Human Rights.

That would lead to further manipulation of the deeply visceral fear of newcomers to the U.S. that was exposed during the election campaigns, McKenzie said. "It absolutely does not end with the presidential election,'' McKenzie said. "It's a national strategy by a small but organized group of anti-immigration advocates and anti-refugee advocates.'' It's unclear if Trump will make good on his pledges. But his election appears to be enough for an Indiana legislative panel led by state Sen. Mike Delph, which didn't recommend any legislation after it spent eight months reviewing illegal immigration. Delph said after the election that the U.S. government's actions may make immigration less of a problem for the states.

In his speech Monday, Ambassador of Mexico to the United States Carlos Sada didn't mention Trump, who has promised to build a wall on the Mexican border and make Mexico pay for it. Instead, Sada listed the economic benefits Mexico extends to the United States, and called for a new language to start new dialogue and reach compromises. We have always been stronger, safer and more successful when we have worked together, Sada said.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry was one of 18 mayors in larger metro areas who signed a letter to Trump urging him to maintain President Barack Obama's protections from deportation for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants. With Trump's hard line on immigration during the campaign, fear remains that he could eliminate the executive move by Obama. Barry called Nashville a new gateway city that 81 people a day move to. In 2000, less than 1 percent of Nashville residents were new Americans; now, Nashville is close to 16 percent of its population being foreign born, Barry said.
