Intruder shot three times by retired cop at Warren home

    Published: Friday, December 23, 2011

Suspect released from prison two months ago

A burglary suspect was shot three times Thursday by a retired police officer who was awakened by a knock on the door of his Warren home, police said.

Less than an hour later, Warren police learned that the injured suspect — a paroled burglar — had been dropped off at a Detroit hospital by a woman who left and is wanted for questioning by police.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the 27000 block of Pleasant, near 11 Mile and Bunert roads. The homeowner, who turned 63 years old on Wednesday, ignored the knock at his front door because he expected a delivery of a package, Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green said.

The homeowner then heard pounding at a side door. When he got up, he saw the intruder had entered his home. The Warren man retreated to his bedroom, grabbed a handgun and confronted the burglar in the kitchen, police said.

“They were face to face. He was obviously concerned for his safety,” Green said.

The homeowner reported that he fired three shots, believing he had struck the man who fled the ranch-style home, police said. The intruder got into a white Buick Lacrosse that headed north on Pleasant.

“There was a small blood trail,” Deputy Police Commissioner Louis Galasso said.

Approximately one hour after the shooting, a Detroit Receiving Hospital representative told Warren police that a man with gunshot wounds was being treated there.

Police said a woman exited the white LaCrosse, went into the hospital, came out with a wheelchair and brought the man inside. He did not confess to the burglary, but made statements at the hospital to police causing investigators to conclude he was the culprit.

The wounded suspect, identified by police officials as Ronnie Dee Mixon, 26, was arraigned at his hospital bed Thursday afternoon by 37th District Judge Dawnn Gruenburg on one count of first-degree home invasion. Gruenburg set bond for Mixon, a resident of Detroit, at $200,000 cash or surety.

The gunshots went through each of the suspect’s biceps and one hand. The injuries were not considered life-threatening, but he is expected to remain hospitalized for at least a few days.

Warren police administrators did not reveal the police agency where the homeowner worked.

“He picked the wrong house in the wrong city,” Galasso said.

Police do not suspect Mixon entered the house with any weapons. Police will review the details of the incident to determine whether the homeowner’s violent response was justified or broke any laws.

“We’ll make that conclusion as part of our investigation,” Green said.

Although the homeowner reported that he thought he fired three shots, evidence technicians recovered three bullets embedded in a wall and one pulled from a door frame, police said.

Warren police believe the house was randomly targeted. Burglars who strike during daytime hours often select homes where garages are closed, no vehicles are visible and nobody answers the front door, officials said.

Mixon was paroled on Oct. 12, according the Michigan Department of Corrections records. He was sentenced in July 2009 to serve 19 months to 15 years in prison for second-degree home invasion in Wayne County, Corrections records show. He was later convicted and sentenced for two previous home invasions in Macomb County, and received the identical prison term.

There's a surprise, a parolee breaking into houses again. I say that we replace parole with a shorter term of hard labor. They can learn the skill of "doing jobs that Americans don't want to do" in prison. Then, they will have some skills, when they get out.

Here in Colorado, we have what is called the "Make My Day" law, which enables a person to protect himself in his home with the use of deadly force. In the dark, with poor visibility, it's probably best to use a 12-guage shotgun with Number 4 (or larger) ammunition. But if you can see, and shoot fairly well, you can't beat a .357 Magnum revolver and jacketed hollow-point ammunition. It often tears things up less than a shotgun, and doesn't leave quite as much, uh, "mess"....

I wouldn't chance it with a pistol in a poorly lit environment. 12 gauge is the ideal gun to have around the house.

These kind of killings go on all the time accross the USA. That is what guns are for. All they need to do is say I felt my life was threatened. shotguns realy put a stop on huge intruders at close range. Just make sure you know how to properly use one. take a look on the youtube at the failues of recoil. LOL.

12 gauge Winchester Super-X 3" magnum Number 1 unplated buckshot.

Firearm was pump shotgun with 20" cylinder bore barrel.

Block calibrated at 592 ft/sec and 9.2cm penetration.

Single shot was fired at the block, permanent cavity of 6"+ collapsed at 9" depth. Shallowest penetrating projectile was found at 11" depth and the deepest was found at 16"+. Muzzle was at 6 feet distance from the face of the block at the time of firing. Shot dispersion approximated 1" diameter at the entrance to the block and 5.5" diameter at the back of the block. All pellets exhibited moderate deformation with the average diameters equalling 0.300".

Cartridge : Federal Tactical rifled slug (Load # LE127RS)

    Firearm : Pump-action shotgun with cylinder-choked 20" smoothbore barrel

    Calibration : All Depths corrected (From 9.1cm @ 586 ft/sec)

Single shot fired to center of block from 10' distance. Shot impacted at 1321 ft/sec, penetrated to 14.4" and was recovered at 1.010" average diameter. Interestingly, the recovered bullet resembled a donut in that the center of the expanded slug had split from the main portion of the projectile. This fragment was recovered butted up against the alongside the front face of the expanded slug.

The 16x6x6 inch block, upon being struck with the projectile, flipped 1.5 feet into the air and off of the test stand. Permanent cavity was 6” in diameter, until 10.5” depth.

    NICE.

if you can handle one. I like to watch the fools who put pistol grips on them with magnum loads try to handle the recoil. LOL Almost as funny as watching idiots shoot .44 mag pistols with factory loads at the gun range. They can't his squat with it. LOL.

Right! You can get off three well-aimed shots with a .357 Mag in the time it takes to get off one .44 Mag, mostly because of the recoil.

Its nice, with all of the thousands of regular accidental shootings, gun murders and gun suicides, that one in a great while a gun protects somebody.

Winchester Silvertips in .44 Mag were developed for SWAT entry teams. With a magnaported barrel, they are quite manageable with the recoil.

Its good to make sure that your child that you are mistakenly shooting while sneaking back into the house through a window after sneaking out, does not suffer a lingering death!

Yeah this guy picked ther wrong house, because 94% of Americans who had a home invasion, in a 1996 study, and had guns for self protection, failed to discharge thier weapons.

People who protect themselves with guns better be sure they have the guts to kill someone....and everybody always likes to think they can, but when the chips are down, you find out what you're really made of

Well, maybe I would rather NOT be one of the FAR MORE NUMEROUS guys trying to make lame excuses why my wife or child is lying wounded or dead from ME mistakenly shooting them, or attending the funeral because one of the FAR MORE NUMEROUS times kids got the gun, played with it, and killed themselves or another child.

The fact that is NATIONAL news when someone actually defends themselves with a gun in their home, whereas the DAILY 110 deaths and wounding from accidental shooting and suicide are EVERY day, and don't even rate a mention.

Further, that some people think home invaders are going to regularly BANG on the door multiple times in the middle of the night to announce their presence and let you get your gun and hunt them down (the only reason this homeowner was successful) is just silliness - most will surprise homeowners very, very cleverly.

If you have a family, simply by the numbers most people are FAR safer without a readily accessible firearm in the home.

How many told the suspects to leave because they had a firearm or simply displayed it causing the suspect to flee?

Uh, what?! What's that comment got to do with anything? What the hell is the matter with some of you people? No child of mine would be sneaking out a window, and even if they did, they would sure as hell know better than to come sneaking into the house through a window. Nobody in my gene pool could be that stupid....
