This is almost as bad as cowboy poetry and turtle bridges. What could $700K do? Maybe remodel a crumbling school. Open up a homeless shelter.

There really is no government waste to cut. We need higher taxes.

    Only 1 reply?

I guess excessive government waste is no longer surprising, so no real discussion is needed anymore.

Considering that NSF is funded at approximately $6.8 billion for fiscal year (FY) 2011 it's chump change. I mean, NSF is also funding a critically important study, "Bullying in the Age of Social Media". Who can possibly say these are not "vital" programs!

And just to put the $700K in perspective...Obama's "vacation" = $4mil...

Dept? What dept? Relax and enjoy...

In all your zeal in reporting wasteful spending, your link no exception, one needs to follow through. (put your thinking caps on)

Those recipients recieved that money through authorization; but save the suspense, this type of questionalable spending is prevasive throughout all levels and areas of govt, regardless of political party.

Follow the authorization trail, there has to be trail, a simple audit on that authorization, will lead to someone who needs to answer to the rationale.

We would be better off studying the first lady on the treadmill. getting her on one would be a miracle.

This is almost as bad as the money our government spent to show African males how to clean their penis's.

    This is way too much.

I saw a dude who trained guenia pigs to row a boat in a fish tank.

He used the power they created to power his laptop.

    LOL......

Reality is, some loser privilaged punk of a wealthy privilaged politician or lawyer, or broadcast media exec need a job for his kid. That's all.

    A sick shrimp doesn't perform as well as a non-sick shrimp...Really????
Common sense could figure that one out without spending a dime.

The shrimping industry in the United States generates billions of dollars per year for our country. Given recent environmental stresses in prime shrimping areas (GULF OF MEXICO, anyone?) I would think that it is a prudent investment of money to find out how these stresses are going to affect the health of the species we depend on for food.

Apparently, nobody whining about this research has bothered to spend a second figuring out what it was about. Fisheries are a $30 + billion a year industry in our nation. Investing two thousandths of a percent of that value on research that can help protect those industries is not a bad investment.

This was a great study. Anybody whining about it is an idiot.

As predicable as ever, they take the lie as gospel, then (*)(*)(*)(*) and moan all over the interwebs about it. This was non-news back in August last year. there are shrimp on treadmills on youtube since 2006 FFS!

" ...Take the case of the "shrimp on a treadmill." Burnett says the senator's report linked that work to a half-million-dollar research grant. But that money actually went to a lot of different research that he and his colleagues did on this economically important seafood species.

The treadmills were just a small part of it, a way to measure how shrimp respond to changes in water quality. Burnett says the first treadmill was built by a colleague from scraps and was basically free, and the second was fancier and cost about $1,000. The senator's report was misleading, says Burnett, "and it suggests that much money was spent on seeing how long a shrimp can run on a treadmill, which was totally out of context.".. "
