Homeland Security Is Monitoring The Drudge Report, The New York Times

It's unclear exactly why, but the Department of Homeland has been operating a "Social Networking/Media Capability" program to monitor the top blogs, forums and social networks online for at least the past 18 months. Based on a privacy compliance review from last November recently obtained by Reuters, the purpose of the project is to "collect information used in providing situational awareness and establishing a common operating picture." Whatever that means. Either way, the list of sites reported by Reuters reveals in a Wednesday afternoon exclusive is pretty intriguing:
    Social Networks

    Facebook
    Twitter
    Myspace

    Blogs

    The Drudge Report
    The Huffington Post
The New York Times's Lede blog
    Wired's Threat Level
    Wired's Danger Room
ABC News' investigative blog The Blotter
"blogs that cover bird flu … news and activity along U.S. borders … drug trafficking and cybercrime"

    Multimedia

    Hulu
    YouTube
    Flickr

In conclusion, the Department of Homeland Security is just like you. We've seen no reports of The Atlantic Wire being on the list. But if we are, hello Department of Homeland Security employees -- thanks for reading!

Hey, Big Sis, look for the missing ATF guns, illegal aliens, and Muslim terrorists please. Let the Democrat National Committee worry about Drudge.

Reason 342 to fire Obama and his minions in November.

This is what we have to look forward to, along with the government having access to all our medical records.

    Remember "ATTTTAAAAACCCCCKKKKKK WWWAAAATTTCCCCHHHH"

This is the ultimate attack watch coming to a city near you.

Say goodbye to all freedom and liberty and welcome tyranny.

No problem. The list doesn't even cover everything that's being monitored. Pretty much anything that links to or from any listed site listed can be monitored too.

    Monitered.
    Hmmm.
Means they are seeing what is being said on the most energetic mode of communication on the planet today. Seeing what the pulse of the country is.

This is tantamount to reading the letters to the editor on a massive scale.

Are people afraid of our government listening to what we are saying?

    Daft.

Do people seriously think the government hasn't been looking at blogs/political websites etc... since the BEGINNING OF THE INTERNET? (which they created in the first place)

Yes I am afraid of any government listening in on what anyone is saying. what is even more frightening is people who make a joke out of it.

Anyone who has spent some time in countries like Cuba or China will see what this is really about.

Reading letters to the editor on a massive scale....oh what poor, pitiful fools will accept. George Orwell is rolling in his grave along with Jefferson and Franklin and Adams and all the others.....

    Who's joking?

They are reading public forums. If you want to keep your opinions secret, don't post on a public forum.

I think it's great they are trying to find out what people are saying and feeling and looking at all kinds of sources to find out.

What are you afraid of? Would you not want the government to know what you are saying and advocating for on here? If not, why not?
