PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Vietnam veteran who lost his eye while serving his country was violently beaten during a random attack by a group of teens on a Philadelphia street earlier this week.

The attack happened shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 5000 block of N. 5th Street in the city’s Olney section.

“These animals are specializing on our elderly people out here and a gentleman who served our country,” Lt. George McClay said.

According to investigators, 64-year-old Edward Schaefer was walking to meet his wife at the bus stop when he was approached from behind by six males.

McClay said one of the suspects began the violent attack and the others joined in on the random beating.

The suspects then fled the scene on foot.

Schaefer was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center with fractured skull and severe injuries to his face and hand.

“I’m disgusted by this whole thing,” McClay said. “I’m surprised he survived.”

McClay said “one more shot the wrong way” and this could have been a homicide investigation.

The suspects are described as six black and Hispanic males, between the ages of 16 to 18. One suspect was wearing an orange-hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

McClay said once apprehended, the suspects could be charged with attempted murder.

The Fraternal Order of Police is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.

Anyone with information is urged to call 215-686-TIPS (8477) or 215-686-3353/54.

It is high time to crack down on violent groups of teens. The liberal proclivity to treat them like children is clearly a sick joke.

Attack an elderly man. Check. Hit him from behind. Check. Make sure you have 5 of your friends to help you. Check. Strut through the streets with your black gangsta buddies, thinking you're 'bad asses'. Check.

I will be dancing a f'n jig when one of these assault victims, or a bystander opens fire and offs some of these wastes.

Listen, clearly these misunderstood, victimized youths were just out having a little fun. Nothing wrong with that. It's their right. There really is nothing to see here.

What does the victim's veteran status have to do with these teens and the beating?

Good point, Philly is a CCW gun-free city. You could not be safer anywhere else for a nice stroll at night.

He was already handicapped while serving his country. That IMO adds insult to the injury, the young democrats that did this should be dumped into the ocean.

Have you have never read a news article, watched a news story or listened to a radio news broadcast? It is the sort of information that always gets commented on. For example, when I professional athlete or former professional athlete is arrested they always mention he is or was a professional athlete. When a priest gets arrested for diddling little boys, they always mention that he is a priest. When a tv producer is arrested for bashing his wife's head in, there is a very good chance they will mention the fact that he is a movie producer.

I agree, but I believe that he was attacked by the liberal media for shooting those poor armed robbery suspects.

Yeah, the NAACP thought the 4 innocent youths did no wrong. Unfortunately, he didn't finish the job. Could have saved a lot of time, money, and personal heartache for a bunch of people.

Unlike Marky Mark, CB would put those punks on Boot Hill in short order.

these kids aren't getting enough taxpayer money to provide for organizations that have productive extra curricular programs as they are passing time criminally

don't think arming citizens is a good idea to stop this, it is just going to leave the kids to die or the victims attacked if the kids become armed themselves

BINGO! sometimes you have to draw a pix and you did an excellent job here in explaining why the victim was identified as a veteran........

Philadelphia has had a spate of violent acts in recent weeks/months. It seems that some of our brothers of the darker people have gotten their (*)(*)(*)(*)s and grins out of beating to death, innocent members of the lighter race whose only fault was that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

i have no idea how to stop this random and gratutious violence that has become a pox for any people who wish to go into the city of brotherly love.:omg:

Not to mention, white on white killing by a non-resident to a resident of Olde City.

Again, I wish these animals would all be locked up. Let the dopesmokers out of jail and make room for the violent criminals, says I.
