This started for me when gas went over $4/gal in 2008. No more trips to town for this or that. No, I make do til I can combine reasons to go somewhere.
For example, I do all my grocery shopping one night a week after I take the kids to Scouts. I never waste gas.
Now gas is almost $3.70/gal, and I don't see anyone's income keeping pace with this. Congress gets a cost of living increase....we don't.

    * How is the rising price of gas affecting YOUR family budget?

    * What impact do you think this - in combination with (still) high unemployment and rising govt spending/debt - will have on Mr. Obama's chance of re-election?

I certainly see and agree with the spirit of this post. My car gets about 25 MPG. My truck gets 17MPG. I used to drive my truck, almost exclusively, leaving the car in 'pristine' condition and used primarily for going to dinner, taking Sunday drives(remember them?) Now the truck sits in the driveway most of the week and the wear and tear goes on the car.
However, I am more fortunate than a lot of us here. Nothing I need in my small but ample community is more than 5 miles away...round trip. Big grocery needs and shopping is 15 miles one way. And, I'm retired, so I don't put on those 'to and from' miles for work. This summer I will get a scooter for my wife and myself. I can't control the price of gas...but I won't let it beat me either.

The price of fuel affects your budget and my budget more than just when you go out in your car. Everything you purchase at any goods store was transported there by use of vehicles that use fuel, which means their price went up because of rising fuel prices. So my budget has been substantially affected by this, and yes, we have had to reduce using our vehicles because of this.

Obama will probably still win because the media will be derelict in their duty to report the truth about Obama's policies and Obama will continue to spend America's future to buy votes. Who is going to vote for the guy who promises to stop stealing from future generations when the current generation couldn't care less about the future?

Indeed it does. One need only to buy groceries to see it.
How much bull will the public swallow from the media when they know in their gut things are worse, not better?
    Interesting point. We'll see.

Its actually having me rethink work from home days for my employees. Many have young families and some are 30-45 minutes away from work so if it gets worse I might have to change some of the policies around working from home.

I know. I live on sort of a 'bump'. No matter which way I go, it's downhill. No matter which way I return, it's uphill. Problem is, when I go, I usually have very little with me..when I return it's usually with something, which makes the trek even more exhausting.

This is a good thread in the sense that it recognizes the dangers of high Big Fossil Fuel prices.

It is a terrible thread in the sense that it's right-wing partisan hack propaganda in that it blames "Democrats", rather than Big Government and Big Fossil Fuel collusion in general, for high Big Fossil Fuel prices.

What about maybe driving up the hill, finding a parking spot... then taking the bike?

Not practical unless you live within 3 miles of work and the weather is nice. Get robbed?
I realize you're being flippant or sarcastic, but it's just not an option for most people.
I do hope you don't think that a bicycle is a real option.....most of the citizens of this country don't live within 3 miles their job.

Big Government is a combination of Democrats, Republicans, and Big Corporation.

But my point is that certain well-meaning (well, maybe not so well-meaning) retards will attribute the increasing prices of food and energy not on the actual objective reasons why they're increasing (which would be dependence on and lack of supply of fossil fuels, land, Big Government/Big Corporation collusion, overpopulation in China and India, etc.), but on "Democrats".

It's dangerous to be in a society where a significant population, or in the case of the U.S., most of the population, mis-attributes the causes of major problems.

Thing is, they could make small very fuel efficient vehicles that aren't quite as fast and tank-like, but EXTREMELY cost-effective and economical, if it weren't for Big Car, Big Oil and the government colluding.

But of course, "Republican" partisan hacks will attribute 100% of all these problems to "Democrats", like retarded morons. THAT is the problem here; people aren't aware of why these things are happening.

The Republicans are making this an election issue so we're bound to hear a lot of braying from the right-wing spindiots.

Herein lies the problem for many Americans. You should change your cars, in fact you should have changed them a long bloody time ago!

3 minles is NOTHING! I've many friends who cycle 15-40 km each way! So 30-80km each day.

As for shopping, there's many options available now for transporting goods by specialist bikes.

TBH - it's laziness and a sense of oil-entitlement which prevents Americans from cycling.

Oh come off it! They make and sell them in the US NOW! The issue is that Americans have a sense that they should be able to bburn as much cheap petrol as they want, only now they're paying closer to the price everyone else pays. You guys shouold have prepared ages ago, but didnt!

So what's your solution? Have everyone pay more than they feasibly can for Big Fossil Fuel, which is only as inexpensive as it is due to government subsidy?

Are you this much of an ignorant partisan hack that you call everything that you disagree with "liberal"? You obviously, based on your posts, have no clue what that word even means.

No, that's spot on about this I'm afraid. Big Government and Big Car and Big Fossil Fuel make it so that the main marketed vehicles are expensive, fancy-schmancy, gas-guzzling ones. Cars and gas are WAY more expensive than they could/should be.

You missed something...I live 'on top of the hill'. You prolly meant it to be the other way round. I think I'll leave the bike for those days on the bike trails...And use that new scooter for traversing the hills. 60 MPG ain't bad...I'll deal with the bugs in my eyes and teeth. But really, the price of things and the state of the nation, in general, do bother me....the price of gas? just ain't an issue. Considering the better mileage I get today compared to 20-30 years ago...it's almost a wash.
