    Controversy Over FDNY Exam Workshop

Updated: Thursday, 01 Mar 2012, 10:48 PM EST

MYFOXNY.COM - A chaotic scene unfolded outside Middle School 72 in Jamaica, Queens, on Wednesday night as several men who wanted to attend a tutorial workshop for the upcoming FDNY entrance exam were turned away.

These men said it was because they were white. The Workshop was being hosted by the Vulcan Society, a fraternal organization of black firefighters, which apparently only let in people who got a special e-mail.

Fox 5 spoke to a few people who were turned away. They didn't want to be identified, but they said it appeared that only African-American hopefuls were admitted to the event.

A federal judge has ruled the FDNY discriminated in hiring and ordered reforms. But these candidates said they are being unfairly punished.

The Vulcan Society did not respond to requests for comment.

City officials said more workshops will be held next week and everyone is invited.

Why couldn't whites attend? What would have MLK said about turning away people based on the color of their skin?

It looks like the workshop was hosted buy a private organization and was by invite only.

It would appear those turned away were not invited.

Race based exclusion in America is perfectly okay...if you are of the right race.
Imagine a white group keeping all minorities out. The outrage would be explosive!

So, private groups can exclude gays and you are ok with it?

Yes. Private groups can do exclude whomever they like and I am fine with it.

Do you see an invite-only here?

"An on-line FDNY Tutorial and Tutorial Nights began the week of 2/6/12. They are one-time, one day only for each applicant to attend an in-person event at one of approximately 35 locations. There will be various dates."

    hahahahahahaha

You never cease to amaze TFM. Discrimination based on race is illegal public or private and I know you know that.

Enjoy your painfully transparent double standard.

    You are incorrect.

    http://law.freeadvice.com/government_law/civil_rights_law_ada/private_discriminate_religious.htm

That depends. When dealing with private individuals, the Federal civil rights statutes only reach as far as public accommodations. Thus, while it is unlawful to discriminate on the basis of race or national origin in hotels, restaurants, theaters, public transportation and public parks, the Federal civil rights laws do not make it unlawful for bona fide private clubs and religious organizations to discriminate on whatever basis they choose.

In your defense of black bigots, you are supporting all bigots, TFM. It seems to be a desperate tactic.

I've already shown you their public website saying the meetings were for applicants. You have already been proven wrong.

Not at all. Folks are free to do as they please, and if certain groups want to exclude others form their private organization they are free to do so.

they didn't want to be identified which means they were race baiting

many of New Yorks blue collar workers especially in the police and firefighting are racists and republicans in my opinion.

What does 'apparently' mean in your world? It sounds like a guess. So, I went to the heart of the matter and proved you wrong.
    It was easy, really.

The article doesn't prove that they were turned away because they were white. It merely speculates such.

Like all cases where blacks are turned away from white events, right? Or, gays being excluded from family organizations. It's all okay with the progressives. It is mere speculation, and hardly anything to get excited about. We are learning so much from the progressives today.

You are simply race baiting. It's silly and sophomoric, and doesn't help you in any way if you're really concerned about white people being discriminated against.

If the article had decisive evidence that only white people were turned away, and that no white people were allowed to attend, you might have an argument. As it stands, you apparently do not, and therefore you're just race baiting. It's pathetic, really.
