Why are people against tax rises obsessed with "handouts to poor people?"

    Hi there.

First of all, let me clarify that I'm not a liberal or a conservative or a socialist or a tea party protestor or any of those stereotypes.

I'm just a person who's confused by what I see on the internet. (Which I'll admit isn't where I should go if I'm looking for polite conversation.)

I've noticed that when people are against tax raises, their immediate reaction is often something along the lines of "why is the government stealing more of my money and giving it to poor people?"

There's nothing wrong with being against welfare programs or anything like that, but what confuses me is how someone can assume that they know what the government is doing with their money when "giving it to poor people" is one of DOZENS of different things the government could be doing with that money. They could be increasing defense spending, increasing scientific research or programs, paying down a deficit, maintaining worn down infrastructure, hell I bet I could sit here and write down different things the government could spend money on all morning.

Why do people assume that when the government raises taxes it's to increase services to the poor?
