Roll of Honour in the Australian War Memorial, Canberra - The wall has the names of every serviceman who died on active service in all of Australia's wars. It has almost 103 000 names. "Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives. You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side Here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, Who sent their sons from far away countries Wipe away your tears, Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace After having lost their lives on this land they have Become our sons as well." - Ataturk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Urtiyp-G6jY
stupid stupid stupid wars, so many lifes lost! Innocent lifes, and not only soldiers, but all those civilians, who cannot run or hide. We own those diggers big times, but we also own the other side....if we only at times say no! Haven't met s single Turk who didn't love Ataturk. A very remarkable statement he made! In hindsight, no war can be won, only lost.... Lest we forget!
Well from what i have found on the internet there hasn't been a war that wasn't sponsored by a Rockerfella, Rothchild, Morgan etc etc for a few hundred years now. Yes all that death and destruction because of some greedy bankers. Ofcourse we are told thats its freedom and democracy that we are fighting for. Still lest we forget those that gave their lives in war even if they didn't really know why and for who they where fighting for. Yes, I agree. I also feel the "blind sheep mentality" of the military is definately PAST its used by date.
Lest we forget More than anything else this one day unites two countries - Australia and New Zealand It has been said we are the only countries in the world that celebrate a major defeat I have no problem with that idea as it carries with it the knowledge that in war there is always those who will suffer. War itself should never be celebrated but the cost and suffering should and always will be remembered Lest we forget

All for the king of a foriegn Land that still Oppresses us.To all of those we have killed in their own Countries we are sorry,For these crimes againgst you we ask one thing . Do not blame our son's for they had no say ,drageoned into service through hunger ,unemploment and ignorance, let us blame together those that Truely deserve it as we remember the "War to end all WARS' as we still pile up the dead! For we remember what our children did feel as mere lads of 15 and 16 did go,into France and Flanders Fields not "HOME" they went at least this time with officers of the same accent! And still when those that that sent them away from us,asked for 'Conscritpion 'we said "NO"! Lest we forget! For some that still send our sons away ,daughters now included ! Near a century and THEY do the same thing send the 'Sons and Daughters of ANZAC 'to shed its Blood in the Wars of other Nations. Bring them home from Afghanistan !NOW!
http://www.awm.gov.au/research/people/roll_of_honour/person.asp?p=496649 Someone in my family from WW1. I have some of his stuff in a box somewhere. I haven't finished unpacking from a move last year so it could be anywhere. They look like the following. Plus there's a few campaign ribbons and stuff.
(((((((((((((((((((sigh)))))))))))))))))))) Looks like once again we also have some catching up to do in relation to recognising our indigenous people and their contribution to ANZAC day http://www.creativespirits.info/aboriginalculture/history/anzac-day-digger-march.html Let us this year have a special thought for those who went to war for a country that did not even count them as people.
I know and I cannot help but wonder at the generosity of spirit that they would and did serve. It is simply about time it was openly acknowledged and spoken of.
I have a book called The Silent Men. One of the soldiers it talks about quite a lot in the book is Aboriginal. It talks about how if anyone was racist towards him the men in his unit would beat the crap out of them.
Sadly I think there may be more than one coming on this thread to grizzle about "Why should we do anything"
My wife and I normally attend the ANZAC Day dawn service at the Australian Ambassador residence here in Vientiane. This year due to work commitments we didn't attend. I'm now feeling the guilt. Lest we forget.
If adults want to acknowledge ANZAC Day, then fair enough that‘s their prerogative, but I do have a problem with people trying in indoctrinate their young children into ANZAC Day, considering many of these really young children simply don’t have the life experience or mental capabilities to fully understand what happened or what is happening. On the news, I saw an 8 year old little girl frightened and crying. From a maturity mental perspective she obviously didn’t have the vaguest clue what was happening - shame on her parents for exposing her to such atrocities and fear at such a young age.
Children at that age are taught about Anzac Day at school. Schools even hold their own Anzac parades.
Don't have a problem with children being taught about history at school, but that's where it should end. Leave the parades about war to the adults who can comprehend what happened; we don't need to be warping then minds of young children with this.
