Labor is warning small businesses against displaying the Coalition's anti-carbon tax posters, saying they risk million-dollar fines if the information is found to be misleading.

The Coalition has sent the fliers to bakeries, butchers, dry cleaners and fruit shops just days before the carbon tax is due to take effect.

Labor is warning businesses to be "very, very careful" about being part of Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's campaign by displaying the posters in their shop fronts.

"Don't allow him to drag you into his cynical scare campaign because the consequences of that are very serious," Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury told Parliament.

"If you do mislead your customers, then you could face fines of up to $1.1 million."

But the Coalition has rejected suggestions their small business posters are misleading.

"The fliers do nothing more than explain the Government own modelling and policy," Opposition small business spokesman Bruce Billson said.

"This is just another example of the Gillard Government trying to intimidate small business to not pass on or talk about the impact of the carbon tax."

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has set up a hotline for members of the public to make complaints about misleading carbon tax claims.

The tactic is a further sign that both sides of politics are preparing to ramp up their campaigning efforts surrounding the tax.

On Tuesday Mr Abbott told a meeting of Coalition MPs that he and other senior party figures would be campaigning "across the country", warning people the tax would push up the cost of living and threaten jobs.

Labor is also preparing a coordinated campaign this weekend to reassure the community about the effects of the tax.

Special Minister of State Gary Gray plans to visit the South Australian city of Whyalla on Sunday - a community Mr Abbott said would be "wiped off the map" because of the carbon pricing scheme.

Mr Abbott visited an RSPCA compound in Canberra on Tuesday to point out that "thousands" of charities would be worse off under the tax despite Government reassurances.

The head of the RSPCA in the ACT, Michael Linke, estimates the cost of the carbon tax will be somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 per year for the local organisation.

"At this stage we're not expecting job losses here in Canberra," Mr Linke told reporters at Mr Abbott's media conference.

"There is absolutely no way that I'm going to compromise animal welfare, so we are going to have to shave costs in other areas."

The Government says more than $300 million is available to councils, community groups and charities to help offset the costs of the carbon tax.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard used Question Time to ridicule Mr Abbott's visit to the animal welfare charity.

"I can assure the Leader of the Opposition (that) on July 1, cats will still purr, dogs will still bark and the Australian economy will continue to get stronger," Ms Gillard told Parliament.

"Presumably tomorrow he will be out trying to scare Skippy the bush kangaroo, and the day after he'll be out trying to scare Puff the Magic Dragon, and so it will go on."

It`s rather curious that Julia Gillard would insist that no one make misleading statements about the carbon tax. Julia obviously hasn`t any mirrors in her house, which under the circumstances, is completely understandable really. This particular move on behalf of the ALP / Greens / "independants", is the most fascist act that this country has ever seen.

If the government thought the opposition flyers were misleading they would have already supressed them or would be initiating a deformation case as we type. They seem to be very vocal about these flyers and threats are being thrown around like condoms at the Mardi Gras. To me they seem worried.

I am sick and tired of both these childish parties playing kindergarten games with peoples lives. I really wish they would both disappear and give some fair dinkum people a go. Get rid of the current media while we're at it. They tell lies.

When you check out the fliers, basically all they are saying is that prices will increase due to the carbon price. This is no surprise to everyone at this stage I would have thought!.[/QUOTE]

"Treasury estimated that the average price rise for meat and seafoods in an average basket of goods would be around 10 cents a week.

Electricity represents 1% of the turnover of the business, and the electricity cost increase from the carbon price would represent about 0.1%.To pass on this cost increase the butcher would have to increase the price of a $11 packet of mince meat by approximately one cent."

I'm with ya here actually slippery, the boat people issue as well is beyond farcical, it is an absolute disgrace!

So why all the threats to small business ?

This asylum seeker issue is now becoming ridiculous. Both parties are playing games, while people are dying. It is clearly a case of small minds trying to solve an issue that requires larger thought processes. These full of themselves politicians have hit a new low. Just when we thought they could get no lower.

    Shame.

    aussiefreeride,
    your threads are sickening,
just stop the boats is one of them, maybe if we stop heading to unjustified wars we wouldn't have so many people knocking on our doors. If the West realizes that the permanent growth of the economy is not the answer, those people one day stand a chance......
Don't lie about the carbon tax: Climate change is not a lie, and we need to fight its aftermath...
Embarrasing Julia, no one is so embarrasing like Tony Abbotts, a real clown, distend to catapult Australia back into medievel times. Right wingers really suck, sorry mate....

Unjustified wars is an interesting concept, but nothing to do with the west, but I guess it makes sense if you believe the propaganda used during wartime and ignore the realities of geopolitical strategy. Not the smartest move for anyone to walk around believing wartime propaganda though.

Anyway, these threats to small business show how diseased the ALP is that their union bullying so easily slips to the surface as politically acceptable. When the leaders of the country appear so corrupt it really lowers the standards across the board as more people think its ok to get away with more bad stuff. Just look around, oh and stop blaming the oppossition party for, I was going to say everything but actually 'anything'. The ALP formed government with the Green's not the Liberals so if the ALP cannot run the country properly in their current arrangement then they are unfit as government.

Me too. Also, it is hilarious how JG is instigating jack booted tactics to supress criticism of the tax that she lied to tha Nation about.

Your statement "unjustified wars is an interesting concept" just shows how distant some people are, because unjustified wars are not a concept for some, but bitter reality.

Cats, the topics of some of the threads I put up are disturbing, but I believe we need to face the facts. As to your reference to "unjustified wars", all war is unjustifiable in the scheme of things, however, there are times when there is no moral option, but to go to war. The East / Islam would have no trouble supplying the world with bilions of refugees without anyone else`s help for thousands of years to come. We have more of a moral obligation to conserve this country as a functional place to live for future generations, than we have to right the wrongs of the world. Perhaps we shouldn`t try to help other countries to get out from under regimes of butchery and brutality, perhaps we should just stand aside and watch them rot in hell, but I am proud of the fact that we have tried to help.

That aside, when I think of the lecture that Julia Gillard gave at the ecconomic summut, my skin crawls, I cringe with embarrassment.

Good to see you again M8.

The question we should be asking our selves is,

Why doesn't the government release the modelling of the effects of the carbon tax?

And yes this Labot / Green government is turning us into a police state.

I don't think anything will satisfy your appetite. You remind me of the little boy who didn't like his vegies, so shoveled them off to his pet dog sitting under the table waiting for the crumbs.

Take your political blinkers off vig so you can see past this stupid ideology that is AGW-CO2 pollution.

Its the new world order's first global tax which distributes wealth (our wealth) through climate policy as that pig Ottmar Edenhofer blatently states.

Since when has freedom been unjust. Just because every mug who picks up a gun feels free and cries freedom doesnt mean they are actually fighting for freedom, but it is what makes the west the west.... unless you buy into the conspiracy's about oil and empire in which case; 'they can see you'

You would have to be a complete IDIOT not to realise that the toll queen and her minions have lied about the cabon tax and everything else - they are just a sodden pack of downright LIARS. Not once have they been honest and told the people that from 2012, Diesel will incur a carbon tax. Just imagine the price increase on everything will skyrocket as the businesses will pass on every increase to the consumers. Everything in this country is transported by Diesel.

Now CULLDAV I must draw your attention to this. Fuel will not attract a carbon tax until 2013 (or maybe 2014)

    BUT
    http://www.cleanenergyfuture.gov.au/transport-fuels/

So changes to fuel excise will also be increased to account for carbon tax not being implamented straight away.

Doesn`t matter, the real cost of the carbon tax on goods will be so hard to calculate, and retailers will be so afraid of prosecution if they state carbon tax imposed price rises & can`t prove their figures in court, that it`ll be impossible to tell the truth about the cost of the carbon tax. Everything will be all good providing the truth is crushed. NOT!

Yes, truth will definitely be crushed. More of a socialist action to attempt to hide from the accountability of the voter. The government have not the knowledge of what this will cost the people of Australia, yet they will attempt to surppress the information that the people need to ascertain the real cost to themselves, rather than be told by politicians, whatever they like. Howard made that very mistake, in the later years of his governance, by telling everybody 'they never had it as good', while they watch the slow decay of living standards in Australia. NOW, this carbon tax, will spell, a speed up in that decay (which actually maybe needed) while the government intends to be the only people to tell you 'how great things are going'

Of course there will be increases through indirect pressure, and later a direct cost, but the fact that Australians will continue to criticise the Fuel companies for something that is really the caused by the government is missed on most.

AND THAT IS HOW LABOR WANT IT.

Talked my mate scoop last night regarding the rumour Wayne Swan was not going to run in his seat in the next election. He said he hasn't heard anything in regards to that other than the polling in that seat is pretty bad for Swanny.

He did however say that there has been rumbling from Labors back bench in regards to the Carbon Tax. Now this is just rumour remember and from a liberal supporter, so take from it what you will. The tax did not have the majority of the support from within the party and those back benchers that were against it were quickly told to toe the line or else. They are still not happy and momentum is building, not only against Gillard but a swag of front benchers with a God complex. Scoops words, not mine.

He doubts anything will come from it this close out from an election, but they are deeply fractured party.

Wait and see. Could be a great campaign.

Someone has to make the hard decisions for all Australians. Misinformation and fear are the only weapons the liberal party and its supporters have.
Aussie is certainly entitled to express his opinion.

    My opinion is;
Howard never stopped any boats he turned em back. Rather the navy did at taxpayers expense and at the risk of the lives and the mental health and morals of the personnel and refugees involved all kept secret from the Australia people.
A carbon tax in Australia may not stop global warming. To attempt to suggest it is fruitless to even try and that Australia's efforts haven't already inspired and are being closely watched by countries the world over in hope is disgusting. To suggest that we don't lead but rather follow meekly is just typical of procrastinating do nothings.
To misinform and fear monger is malicious and self serving.
