Nootbaar said, “Her quote was, ‘When she first started school she wanted to be a nurse, then a veterinarian and now that she was getting closer to graduation, people would ask her, what do you want to do and she said how the hell do I know? I’ve changed my mind so many times.’”

He said in the written script she gave to the school she wrote “heck,” but in the moment she said “hell” instead.

Nootbaar said the audience laughed, she finished her speech to warm applause and didn’t know there was a problem.

That was until she went to pick up the real certificate this week.

“We went to the office and asked for the diploma and the principal said, ‘Your diploma is right here but you’re not getting it. Close the door; we have a problem,’” Nootbaar said.

He said the principal told Kaitlin she would have to write an apology letter before he would release the diploma.

A move her dad believes is illegal.

“She earned that diploma. She completed all the state curriculum. In four years she has never made a B. She got straight A’s and had a 4.0 the whole way through.”...

Kaitlin doesn’t plan on writing an apology letter because she doesn’t feel she did anything wrong.

    Her family supports that choice.

What is with this child and her parents? You screwed up and swore on stage. Write the apogoly and its done. But noooo she has to make a statement and stamp her little feet in defiance. And her moronic parents actually support that!

How about being accountable for your mistakes?

"Hell" is a curse word, okay, but I doubt the school can prevent from the girl receiving her diploma.

She DID go off-script, so yeah, maybe an apology is in order.

Now, if she had said something like "And by the way, Obama sucks!" then the entire weight of the NEA would have landed on her head!

I dont know the rules behind that but the point is this girl should be taking personal responsibility.

    That is (*)(*)(*)(*)ing hysterical.

Of all the things in this world to get torqued about, this principle is mad because someone said hell.

Wow. I am truly (*)(*)(*)(*)ing amazed at how incredibly petty some folks int his world are. I would then assume the principal walks around with his ears covered to prevent those awful words form seeping in.,

Hell is considered a bad word in elementary school.

In high school if you think its any sort of a swear word you have obviously been sheltered. More christian BS from the right. Used to be if you said words like hell or god publicly conservatives would stone you. Then progressives and logical people came in and ruined all the fun.

    She might have straight A's

But she's still a woman who wants to be a nurse

    Which is great...

But don't think that straight A's and being a nurse are relative

It's a skill thing, like nursing

But what do I know? I only work in healthcare administration as a recruiter of said positions

I suspect a polite request for an apology may well have achieved just that. The objection seems to be the principal allegedly trying to blackmail an apology out of her by threatening to withhold her diploma, which would be a gross over-reaction to the "offence". It isn't as if a forced apology means anything anyway.

If they feel the principal is abusing his authority, possibly illegally, do you think it would be right to just let him get away with it (and maybe do it again)? I'm not sure the "stamping feet in defiance" has necessarily be aimed in the right direction.

You lost it before you posted.

The point was the same as before. This girl should take personal responsibility for what she said and write the apology note.

Go ahead and run away from it again. Its expected.

We don't know its illegal. That's pure speculation.

We do know she swore and this would be over if she wrote the apology. Can you give any reason why she shouldn't?

Oh my. She said hell. :-O

Yeah she went off script, but you know what? Good on her. She's the valedictorian, she worked hard her school career to earn that position. Now the school wants to play chicken with her college education? I don't think so. That school can not legally without documents that would restrict her freedom to continue into higher education.

Her parents paid for that education, whether it be tuition or taxpayer money for public school, and she not only legitimately passed, but she was the freaking validictorion.

Pretty sure this is illegal. They should just give her the diploma.

Why should she apologize for something that's not a big deal? This is politically correct BS. I'm only 23, I was in the 8th grade within the last decade, so I remember vividly the way kids that age talk. And it's a lot worse than that, for sure, so she didn't corrupt any minds, I assure you. And adults frequently swear, so I doubt they were mortified when they heard that.

    So.....what's the issue here?

If she has met the requirements for her HS diploma, the high school can’t keep it from her. If I was her, I would them to F***k off and demand my diploma.

Why should she have to write a note saying sorry when hell isn't a swear world and when she has met the state requirements for her diploma.

Whether one believes she owes an apology or not is one thing. Judge her on whether she does, or does not, issue one.

What is wrong is for the principal to extort one from her by withholding her diploma. He can ask or suggest an apology, but that should be it.

    Regardless, the principal needs Exlax.

So four years of hard work isn't enough personal responsibility?

She had earned her diploma before she gave the speech and she should have it.
