Unveiling the results of the six-month inquiry in Sofia on Tuesday, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said two suspects holding Australian and Canadian passports were directly linked to Hezbollah.

"We have established that the two were members of the militant wing of Hezbollah," he said.

"There is data showing the financing and connection between Hezbollah and the two suspects."

Bulgarian police have released a composite image of the suspected suicide bomber who killed five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian driver on a bus on 18 July.

The bomber, who blew up a bus in the Black Sea resort of Burgas, has not been identified yet.

Forensic experts created the image of a dark-haired man with pale skin. The bomber's head was found at the scene.

Report: Iran and Hezbollah Forming Militias in Syria
February 11, 2013 - A report published Monday by the Washington Post says Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah have been building a militia network in Syria to preserve their interests if President Bashar al-Assad's government collapses.

Citing unnamed senior U.S. and Middle Eastern officials, the report says the militia's immediate goal is to support Mr. Assad's military as it battles rebel forces in a civil war that is approaching its third year. But the officials say the long-term goal is to have a reliable presence in Syria in the event the government collapses or is forced to retreat from Damascus.

A senior Obama administration official was quoted as saying "It is important for Iran to have a force in Syria that is reliable and can be counted on." Neither Iranian nor Hezbollah officials have commented on the report. The United Nations says more than 60,000 people have died since the Syrian conflict began in March of 2011.

On Monday, activists in Syria said rebels had taken hold of the country's largest hydro-electric dam along the Euphrates River in the northern province of Raqa. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the dam is still in operation. Government and rebel accounts cannot be independently verified because Syria does not permit journalists to report freely.

The dam produces 880 megawatts of electricity, a small amount of the country's production. Syria's electricity production relies on plants powered by natural gas and fuel oil.

Still, the capture handed the rebels control over water and electricity supplies for both government-held areas and large swaths of land the opposition has captured over the past 22 months of fighting. "This is the most important dam in Syria. It is a strategic dam, and Lake Assad is one of the largest artificial lakes in the region," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. "It supplies many areas around Syria with electricity," Abdul-Rahman said, citing the provinces of Raqqa, Hassaka and Aleppo in the north as well as Deir el-Zour in the east near the Iraqi border.

What next for Hezbollah, Israel, Syria and Iran?
14 February 2013 - In a turbulent and rapidly-changing region, Hezbollah finds itself facing an unprecedented array of threats and challenges. Will it be fatally weakened if its strategic ally, the Syrian regime, collapses?

Will it get drawn into, or trigger, a devastating war with Israel if Iran, another strategic ally, is attacked over its nuclear ambitions - and even if not? Will it find itself embroiled in a confessional civil war with the Sunnis in Lebanon, especially if Syria breaks apart and the region is plunged into a process of sectarian balkanisation? On top of all those very real possibilities, the militant Shia movement also faces further international censure and isolation following Bulgaria's accusation that it was behind the bomb attack which killed five Israeli tourists at the Black Sea resort of Burgas last July.

It may also have had to tolerate a slap in the face from the Israelis on 30 January, when their jets struck what US officials insist was an arms consignment destined for Hezbollah at a military centre inside Syria. That triggered fears of a wider regional flare-up. Given the delicate, complex and explosive situation Hezbollah finds itself in, it is hardly surprising that leaders and officials have drawn in and give virtually no media interviews these days to share their views on the above questions. But many observers and analysts seem to agree that, while all those grim scenarios remain more than possible, they are by no means inevitable, and may well not happen.

'No interest' in Israeli war

In terms of another war with Israel, Hezbollah has undoubtedly been building up its arsenal since the last one in 2006, irrespective of what happens with Syria's missiles and chemical weapons stocks. While some observers believe that a "critical mass" of preparation on both sides may mean that conflict is ultimately inevitable, there is certainly no sense at the moment that either is spoiling for a fight. Despite the imbalance of power in this conventionally asymmetrical match, Western diplomats believe that, with long-range Hezbollah rockets installed in the northern part of the Bekaa Valley and shorter-range ones further south, Israel would face three to four weeks of devastating hostilities if a new war erupted. Rhetoric aside, Hezbollah also knows that if war breaks out with Israel again, it will not just be the mainly Shia towns and villages of South Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut that will pay a heavy price.

Israeli leaders have made it clear that infrastructural and state targets will also be considered fair game, especially now that Hezbollah is the major power behind the Beirut government. The huge private and public investment in reconstruction after the 2006 war would all be lost. Hezbollah is aware that that is not something to be embarked on lightly, and that its own Shia community would be hardest hit. Hezbollah has scrupulously observed the ceasefire that ended hostilities in 2006. "It has no interest in picking a war, neither do the Israelis, who see the whole regional scene unfolding to their benefit," said one Shia source. So, left to their own devices in a purely Lebanese context, there is no reason to believe that another war between Hezbollah and Israel will necessarily happen. Developments in Syria may also fall short of triggering another such war, if the 30 January air raid is anything to judge by.

If Hezbollah-destined weapons were indeed hit, the movement seems to have chosen not to regard it as a direct provocation. Diplomats say Israel was swift to assure them privately that no targets were struck inside Lebanon. But a major Israeli or American attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would make another Hezbollah-Israel clash almost, but not entirely, inevitable, given Hezbollah's undoubted status as a strategic Iranian asset. However, some Shia analysts are convinced that a US-Iranian understanding may yet emerge to head off that scenario. As for another bout of internal conflict in Lebanon, where Hezbollah clashed violently with Sunnis and Druze in 2008, there is equally little feeling that the movement is looking to pick a fight, despite deepening sectarian sentiment and political rifts over Syria. Ironically, some western diplomats have even come to see Hezbollah as a factor for stability in the Lebanese equation. "Our interests are not totally opposed," said one.

Hezbollah used to operate just fine without Syrian support (in fact they used to actively fight Syrian related groups such as Amal), and they will probably get along fine with a regime change in Syria as well. They are a major political party now and are less likely to fall quietly into the night as they were back before their conflict with Israel in 2006. My guess is that they will still be there.

Hezbollah condemned for 'attack on Syrian villages'
18 February 2013 - Syrian rebels and the opposition have accused the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah of attacking Syrian villages.

The Syrian National Council (SNC) said Hezbollah fighters attacked three villages near the Lebanese border in support of the Syrian government. Hezbollah said three Lebanese Shia were killed in the clashes. Hezbollah has consistently denied it has sent its members to fight for the Syrian regime. The UN meanwhile has said human rights abuses in Syria have got worse. In a report issued on Monday, a UN-appointed inquiry team said the conflict had become "increasingly sectarian... radicalised and militarised", according to AFP news agency. The panel said war crimes by both sides were growing, although it said abuses by rebels were not on the same scale as those committed by government forces.

UN human rights investigator Carla del Ponte said it was time the UN Security Council referred the issue of war crimes to the International Criminal Court. EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels renewed sanctions - including an arms embargo - against Syria, whilst agreeing to provide more non-lethal support to rebels "for the protection of civilians". However they did not go as far as easing the arms ban on those fighting the Syrian regime, as Britain had wanted. Last week, the UN said it estimated 70,000 people had been killed in the conflict since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began nearly two years ago.

'Unprecedented invasion'

According to the SNC and Syrian Revolution General Commission (SRGC) opposition groups, Hezbollah fighters crossed into central Syria on Saturday and attacked three villages in the Qusayr region of Homs. "The Hezbollah force moved on foot and was supported by multiple rocket launchers. The Free Syrian Army [FSA] had to call in two tanks that had been captured from the Assad army to repel the attack," SRGC spokesman Hade al-Abdallah told Reuters news agency. FSA spokesman Luay al-Miqdad called the alleged Hezbollah operation an "unprecedented invasion", according to a report in the Lebanese newspaper An Nahar. "Hezbollah's invasion is the first of its kind in terms of organisation, planning and coordination with the Syrian regime's air force," Mr Miqdad was quoted as saying. An unnamed Hezbollah spokesman was reported as confirming the three Shia deaths, but without saying whether they belong to the group.

AFP news agency quoted the spokesman as saying the dead fighters had been acting "in self-defence". At least five Syrian rebels were also killed in the clashes, unconfirmed reports said. Hezbollah is one of the biggest groups in Lebanon's governing coalition and is strongly backed by Iran, a close ally of President Assad. Mr Assad's minority Alawite sect is an off-shoot of Shia Islam. Besides the Lebanese army, Hezbollah's armed wing is by far the strongest and best equipped in the country. Lebanese officials have long accused Hezbollah's military wing, the Islamic Resistance, of fighting in Syria, while the US says Hezbollah provides training, advice, and logistical support to the Syrian military. The latest reports come days after a senior commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards was killed travelling from Syria to Lebanon.

February 18th, 2013 - The Obama administration is calling for European countries to restrict Hezbollah's ability to operate by adding the group to the European Union's terror list, citing the Lebanon-based group's involvement in the deadly attack last year in Bulgaria.

The president's national security adviser Thomas Donilon wrote in an op-ed published in the New York Times on Monday that Europe "can no longer ignore" the threat that Hezbollah poses. "European governments must respond swiftly. They must disrupt its operational networks, stop flows of financial assistance to the group, crack down on Hezbollah-linked criminal enterprises and condemn the organization's leaders for their continued pursuit of terrorism," Donilon wrote in the item headlined "Hezbollah Unmasked." One White House official told Security Clearance the op-ed was the "next step in a line of efforts" to stop Hezbollah, including "considerable work" with the EU, Israel and other countries.

Donilon said Hezbollah's ability to operate worldwide and conduct covert attacks was underscored by the Bulgarian government investigation which blamed Hezbollah for the planning and executing of an attack that killed five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian bus driver and injured dozens more in Burgas, Bulgaria last July. After the release of the investigation details, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, called on European nations "to take immediate action to crack down on Hezballah." At the time, Kerry did not specifically call on the EU to add Hezbollah to its terrorist list but the U.S. has been trying to convince the EU to take more action against Hezbollah since the attack, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said earlier this month. "I think you know that for many, many months, we've made no secret of our desire to see the EU take firmer action with regard to Hezbollah."

Nuland also said that Lady Catherine Ashton, EU's foreign minister, was "fully aware" of the State Department position. The White House also released a statement earlier this month saying, "We call on our European partners as well as other members of the international community to take proactive action to uncover (Hezbollah's) infrastructure and disrupt the group's financing schemes and operational networks."

In his op-ed, Donilon cited many other Hezbollah linked attacks, including the 1983 bombing of the United States Embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people. "Over the last decade, Hezbollah has worked assiduously to obscure its terrorist pedigree and convince the world that it is interested only in politics, providing social welfare services, and defending Lebanon. But it is an illusion to speak of Hezbollah as a responsible political actor. Hezbollah remains a terrorist organization and a destabilizing force across the Middle East."

Syrian-Hizballahs capture of Qusayr opens direct weapons route to Lebanon
May 19, 2013, Shortly after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu pledged Sunday, May 19, to maintain Israeli operations in Syria against the passage of advanced Iranian weapons to the Lebanese Hizballah, Syrian troops and their Hizballah comrades stormed Al-Qasayr, the northwestern town which commands the high road from Syrian Homs to Lebanons Hermel Mountains.

This was a major victory: Iranian arms for Hizballah can now go through from Syria to destination unobstructed. In more than two years of battling the Assad regime, this was one of the rebels most devastating losses after three weeks of bitter fighting and the last of a whole row of recent setbacks. Bashar Assad in contrast has gained huge advantages from his al Qusayr victory, as debkafiles military sources report:

1. It cuts off the Syrian rebels main supply and communications route via Lebanon through which their Arab backers Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE to send them fighters, arms and funds.
2. Rebel positions in the nearby town of Homs become increasingly vulnerable, as the Syrian army regains control of the main highway links between Damascus, Homs and Aleppo. Qusayr also links Damascus with the Mediterranean coast, where Alawites and other regime loyalists are concentrated.
3. After the rebels were pushed out of Al-Qasayr, Turkey remains their only accessible source of supplies.

However, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has made a sudden U-turn. He had promised publicly to lobby for no-fly zones in his meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House Friday, May 17, to shield rebel forces in different parts of the country from Syrian air strikes. Instead, Edrogan threw his support between the international conference sponsored by Washington and Moscow for resolving the Syrian conflict. This told the rebels that the supportive Turkish channel was closing down.
It is obvious to them that the conference can only succeed if Washington comes over to the Russian-Iranian-Hizballah side and agrees to the perpetuation of the Assad partys role in any future government. As yet, neither of the contestants has agreed to attend the conference for which no date has been set. However, Turkish backing and arms supplies through its territory are expected to shrink progressively to squeeze the rebels into accepting a formula which would be tantamount to bowing to the defeat of their uprising.

4. For Israel, the fall of al Qusayr means that while rebel supply routes are shut down, supply routes open up for the free movement of Iranian weapons from Syria straight to HIzballah strongholds in Lebanon. This would be Hizballahs reward for its military aid to Assads army. If Prime Minister Netanyahu was serious about his promise Sunday to cut off Hizballahs weapon routes from Syria, he has three primary options to choose from none of them easy, to say the least.

In part, this is a response to the growing body of evidence from investigations in Bulgaria and Cyprus that indicate Hezbollah's role in carrying out or planning attacks. But equally it reflects a growing frustration with the Lebanese Shia grouping following its decision to intervene in Syria's civil war on the side of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. There are growing concerns in Western European diplomatic circles that Hezbollah is playing with fire and that Syria's bloodshed could easily spill over into Lebanon. Indeed, there are early signs that this is already happening.

Hezbollah's embrace of Assad regime during the bitter Syrian conflict has hardened European hearts against it

The British government is pushing its European partners to designate the military wing of Hezbollah as a terrorist entity. This comes in the wake of the organisation's role in an attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria and the recent conviction of a Hezbollah operative in Cyprus. The Foreign Office minister in London, Alistair Burt, said that this was "the appropriate course of action, especially after we have confirmed that the military wing has been carrying out terrorist acts for a long time. "We have proof of this," he went on, pointing to the bomb attack on an Israeli tourist bus in Burgas airport in Bulgaria in July of last year, and the more recent conviction of a Hezbollah member in Cyprus for planning to carry out what he called "terrorist acts." Hezbollah denies involvement in the Burgas bombing.

French shift

Up to now, only Britain and the Netherlands have placed the military wing of Hezbollah on their national terrorism blacklists. Germany now seems more willing to designate Hezbollah's military arm, and this has given some impetus to the British move. The French position has also shifted. Hezbollah's growing role in the Syrian fighting has changed the calculus in Paris. France has up to now been cautious, fearing what pressure upon Hezbollah might do to stability in Lebanon, where the French, among others, have a significant number of peacekeeping troops. Quite apart from the continuing debate within the European Union about lifting the ban on arms sales to rebels in Syria, the fate of peacekeepers (Unifil in southern Lebanon and the UNDOF disengagement monitors on the Golan Heights) is also a growing concern as tensions grow in these crucial border regions.

The British move to list Hezbollah's military wing comes as the image of the Lebanese organisation - long hailed in the region as one of the principal resistance forces against Israel - is coming under strain. Hezbollah's involvement in the Syrian civil war has raised concerns about its motives in Lebanon and beyond. Its troops have had a significant impact on the fighting. US Secretary of State John Kerry noted only recently that there were thousands of Hezbollah fighters in Syria. Hezbollah seems to have thrown in its hand with President Assad, confirming the views of many of its critics that it is playing out a wider game plan inspired by Tehran. The Iran-Syria-Hezbollah axis is under clear pressure now. The risks for all parties are great. Hezbollah, for one, risks sacrificing the reputation it has built up in Lebanon to help prop up the failing Alawite regime in Syria.

30 May 2013 > An armoury belonging to the Lebanese group Hezbollah has been discovered in northern Nigeria, the West African nation's army and spy agency has said.

Three Lebanese nationals have been arrested, an army spokesman, Brig Gen Ilyasu Isa Abba, said. The cache, including rifles, anti-tank weapons and an RPG, were found in a warehouse in the city of Kano, he said. Nigeria's State Security Service said they were intended for use against "Israeli and Western interests". "This is the handwork of Hezbollah," Bassey Ettang, director of the State Security Service in Kano said. "What has just been discovered is a cell of Hezbollah and what you have seen here is a Hezbollah armoury," he told journalists in Kano on Thursday.

Brig Gen Ilyasu Isa Abba said 11 anti-tank weapons, four anti-tank mines, a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and 21 RPG missiles, 17 AK-47s, two sub-machine guns and 76 grenades had been amongst the weapons found. The Lebanese owner of the warehouse where "the weapons of mass destruction" had been stored in sawdust was out of the country, he said There is a large business Lebanese community in Kano city, the commercial hub of in northern Nigeria. Kano and north-eastern Nigeria has suffered multiple attacks in the last three years since the home-grown Islamist militant group Boko Haram launched an insurgency.

Mr Ettang added: "You can also be sure that if a group like this is existing then it may even lend support to some of the local terrorists we have on the ground." Hezbollah is a Shia military and political movement based in Lebanon considered by the US to be a terrorist organisation. Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden", says its quest is to overthrow the Nigerian government and create an Islamic state. There has been growing concern that Boko Haram could be receiving backing from al-Qaeda-linked militants in other countries.

Separately, five fighters from Chad and two from Niger were arrested among insurgents fleeing a two-week-old offensive against Islamist sect Boko Haram in the northeast, as they tried to cross the border into Chad, Nigeria's defense spokesman Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said in a statement. Authorities believe there has been a growing involvement of al-Qaida-linked foreign jihadists in Nigeria's insurgency. The secret service detained the first suspect, Mustapha Fawaz, on May 16 at his supermarket in Kano. His interrogation led to other suspects, including Abdullah Tahini, who was later arrested at Kano airport with $60,000 in undeclared cash.

Weapons Stash

The third, Talal Roda, a Nigerian and Lebanese citizen, was arrested on Sunday at the house where the weapons were found two days later. The search team uncovered an underground bunker in the master bedroom where a large quantity of assorted weapons of different types and caliber were recovered, Iweha said. All those arrested have confessed to have undergone Hezbollah terrorist training. The possibility of a link with Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram, which Nigerian forces are battling in a major offensive in the northeast, was being investigated, Iweha said at a news conference. An alliance between Salafist Sunni Muslim Boko Haram and Shi'ite Hezbollah would be unusual, and there has never previously been evidence of such a link.

Though most Nigerian Muslims are Sunni, there are several thousand Shi'ite Nigerians, a legacy of Muslim radical Ibrahim Zakzaky's preachings since the 1980s. Zakzaky still leads Nigeria's main Shi'ite movement and has campaigned for an Islamic government and stricter adherence to sharia law. Iweha declined to say if any link to Zakzaky was being investigated, and his movement is currently seen as largely peaceful. A Nigerian court sentenced an alleged member of Iran's Revolutionary Guard and a Nigerian accomplice to five years in prison this month over an illegal shipment of mortars and rockets seized in the main port of Lagos in 2010.

In the wake of Monday nights alleged attack by Israel on a Hezbollah arms convoy, the organizations chief, Hassan Nasrallah, warned key military personnel of the possibility of war with the Jewish state, a Lebanese journalist with close ties to the organization said on Thursday. In his recent speech, Hassan Nasrallah warned that Hezbollahs readiness against the [Israeli] enemy has nothing to do with other battles, Ibrahim Al-Amin, editor of Lebanons Al-Akhbar daily wrote in a column. What he did not say publicly, he told his partys military personnel in closed meetings where he called them to action, saying that the resistance [Hezbollah] may be forced to wage a battle on three fronts at the same time: in Syria, inside [Lebanon], and against the [Israeli] enemy.

Israel put its troops on the northern border with Lebanon on high alert Wednesday, shortly after Hezbollah threatened retaliation for the alleged Israeli airstrike. Lebanese media reported Monday that Israeli Air Force jets struck targets near the border with Syria in the Bekaa Valley. Lebanons Daily Star reported that two trucks transferring missiles and a missile launcher were targeted in the raid as they were being transported from Syria to a Hezbollah storage facility. However, Hezbollah denied that a missile or artillery site was the target.

Israel and Hezbollah both denied the reports at the time, but a senior Israeli security official told Time magazine on Tuesday that the Jewish state was indeed behind the bombing. On Wednesday, Hezbollah acknowledged it was attacked by Israel and warned that it would strike back when and where it deemed appropriate.

In his column, Al-Amin compared Israels confirmation of the attack a day after it allegedly took place to the conduct of a man who ejaculates prematurely while engaged in sexual relations with a woman because hes too eager to kiss and tell. Thats the way Israel is, always in a hurry, he wrote. Its leaders apply the popular Israeli saying regarding the behavior of men, whereby the Israeli man reaches his sexual climax quickly only so he can run and tell his friends that he scored with a woman.

Hezbollahs Nuclear Bomb: We Can Kill Tens of Thousands of Israelis by Hitting Toxic Gas Tank
February 19, 2016 | Israels ambassador to the United Nations has called on U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to condemn a veiled threat by the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah a member of Lebanons caretaker government to kill tens of thousands of Israelis by firing missiles at a toxic gas storage tank in Israels third-largest city.

In a letter to Ban, Ambassador Danny Danon urged him to condemn publicly this threat of the mass murder of innocents, adding that the gravity of the threat was magnified by Hezbollahs ongoing militarization of southern Lebanon. Israeli and U.S. security officials say Iran and Syria have helped Hezbollah to rebuild a stockpile of up to 100,000 rockets since its 33-day war against Israel in 2006.

In a speech on Tuesday the Shiite groups leader, Hasan Nasrallah, noted that an Israeli expert has warned that a leak of poisonous gas from an ammonia tank in the port of Haifa could be extremely hazardous to large numbers of residents. The people of Haifa fear a lethal attack on the containers there are huge containers there which store ammonia, he said in the speech, as reported by Hezbollahs official Al-Ahed newspaper and television station Al-Manar, and translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute. In the 2006 war we refrained from attacking those containers, he said. They store there over 15,000 tons let me repeat, tons of this gas, which might cause the deaths of tens of thousands of people.

Recalling that the Israeli expert had likened the risk to that of a nuclear bomb, Nasrallah said, In other words, Lebanon has a nuclear bomb. This is no exaggeration, absolutely not. Then he laughed, We dont really have a nuclear bomb. Its a nuclear bomb in a sense that several missiles launched from here, together with the ammonia containers in Haifa, will lead to the same impact as a nuclear bomb. Nasrallah said the Israeli expert predicted that if a few missiles land on those containers, in an area where 800,000 people live, tens of thousands of people will be killed. The terrorist leader characterized the missile threat both as a deterrent to prevent another war, and as a means to ensure that Hezbollah wins that war if one does take place.

Nasrallah said it would take Israel days to destroy the southern suburbs of Beirut Hezbollahs stronghold but that Hezbollah could, with just a few rockets, target gas containers in Haifa and kill tens of thousands of settlers. Do not try us, Al-Ahed quoted him as saying in the speech, delivered by video link to supporters from an unknown location, as is his habit. During the 2006 war Hezbollah fired thousands of rockets into Israeli territory, some reaching as far as Hadera, around 50 miles south of the border and 30 miles beyond Haifa.
