Awesome. They are only in the Kilowatt range right now, but that is more than sufficient to kill drones or even cruise missiles. I expect they will be used for short range missile defense as well.

Bonus: They cost only $1 to fire each shot.

Awesome. Upon further development, a powerful laser directed at an enemy ship's power plant and/or navigational systems could disable it with minimal loss of life.

I am surprised they are deploying them so quickly. Rail guns are not due for deployment until 2025 or so. By then we should have lasers in the megawatt range and the rail guns might be made obsolete(?).

The article talks about how this will permanently end Iran's annoying drone harassment, heh heh.

    USS Ponce.
In British English, a ponce is an effeminate man.
I have visions of a load of American sailors, mincing around, combing their hair a lot and sexing each other in their pink cabins.

What's the over/under on how long it'll take the enemy to make their ships' exterior out of mirrors?

Hopefully soon, they'll develop Mobile Suits so that I can join the army :D. I may lack physical strength, but my technical skills are bare none :D.

I was joking. This is what my text looks like when I'm joking. Yes, it does look this way all the time, but you should be able to tell the difference. That was a joke, btw. Okay, now I'm serious again. Kidding.

Many years ago, there was a terrible B movie, Spaceman and King Arthur.
The bad guys had got hold of the spaceman's laser so he borrowed Arthur's shiniest armour. The result of the reflections were epic.
I have visions of Ponce sailors, mincing to their lasers, only to have their goolies fried by return fire.
That'll save them the money for the sex change operations.

These weapons aren't and should never be about minimizing lose of enemy life. We want our enemies to fear for their lives when they even think about attacking us.

I still like the tactical neutron weapons that kill everyone on the ship and leaves the ship undamaged.

The EMPs are nice too. An EMP weapon set to detonate as it hits the hull of a ship would not only destroy the ships electronics but electrocute everyone on the ship.

Nitrogen being a big part of our atmosphere I'm surprised that the EPA isn't all over this weapon system because that thing is going to leave a trail of N2O and NO2 behind it. One being a horrible greenhouse gas and the other is a toxic air pollutant.

I was just looking at a graph of N2O and saw that CO2 has jumped by less than 60 parts per million while Methane has gone up by more than 300 PPM since 1978. We all know that Methane has a much greater greenhouse effect than CO2 but blaming Methane for global warming doesn't destroy the coal industry on limit how cool or warm people can keep their living spaces.

I keep telling people that the "future" is just over the horizon. We are about to witness the birth of a new era. Enjoy the ride, and thank a scientist while you're at it...

Why do I have the feeling that someone in the navy is going to use that to roost some marshmallows?

"scientists" have all sorts of nifty ideas, but it's the engineers that make them happen. :sun:

i wouldn't go quite that far unless you're going to try to expand the meaning to everyone that employs the scientific method in their professional life...which would leave out this one crackhead in Saginaw that keeps getting busted for breaking into the same donutshop...that's still open...during third watch's second coffee break.
