Obama has been handing them out like candy. Makes me wonder if he is compensating with volume to bury the skepticism of some of his first living recipients' acts meriting the distinction. I never agreed with the Bush policy of refusing to consider anyone who survived the encounter that was the basis for the presentation of the CMH either. Maybe a happy medium between the two standards would be best.

There was some skepticism I think on if Salvatore Giunta's actions merited the distinction (including by the recipient) and of course, there was the Dakota Meyer dispute over many of the facts related to his actions.
Many of those labeled heroes don't feel they deserve it since many of their comrades did the same or similar things without recognition. This article addresses some points you made.
