(Reuters) - Russian law enforcement officials on Friday sought the arrest of real estate businessman Sergei Polonsky, believed to be in Israel, to face trial over fraud charges.

The country's interior ministry asked a court to put Polonsky under arrest in absentia and requested that a procedure to extradite him should begin, a statement posted on the ministry's website said on Friday.

According to an interior ministry press release in June, Polonsky was charged in absentia with fraud relating to a property firm he founded which is accused of stealing more than 5.7 billion roubles ($172 million) from people who had prepaid for flats in a residential housing complex it was building.

"The investigative department of the Interior Ministry of Russia initiated a petition before the court in respect of ... Sergei Polonsky, who is accused of committing ... fraud ... to detain him, in absentia," the statement said.

"If the court approves the investigator's request, the process will start to extradite Polonsky to Russia."

Polonsky, worth $1.2 billion before the global financial crisis, was at the center of the recent case against media magnate Alexander Lebedev, who was charged with hooliganism for throwing a punch at Polonsky on a television show. The case, brought by Russia's investigative committee, saw Lebedev avoid a jail sentence but be ordered to do 150 hours of community service.

Polonsky has a visa to stay in Israel until September 27, the statement said, citing law enforcement authorities in Israel. It added Israeli authorities had asked Russia to inform them about its intentions in respect to Polonsky.

Earlier in the year, Polonsky was detained in Cambodia accused of assault and illegal detention after an incident on a boat, according to authorities in the country at the time. He was later freed.

A statement on a Facebook account which appears to be Sergei Polonsky's press office, said that Polonsky was disappointed with the decision by the interior ministry, and that he insisted on an objective investigation. He is ready to cooperate fully with investigators, the statement said.

Polonksy's lawyer Alexander Dobrovinsky was not immediately available for comment.

Meanwhile Polonsky want to get Israeli citizenship. Well, in this case 2 passports is really better than one passport for him.

We should invite him to the US, and then offer to trade him for Snowden.

MOSCOW, August 13 (Itar-Tass) - Moscow's Tverskoi district court on Tuesday sanctioned the arrest in absentia of Russian businessman Sergei Polonsky accused of serious fraud.

The investigator lodged the petition to arrest Polonsky two weeks ago. The businessman, wanted by Interpol is currently outside Russia.

On Tuesday, investigator Oleg Silchenko stated that the businessman had been put on the international wanted list on July 25, and that Polonsky had asked the Israeli Interior Ministry to grant him citizenship in order to avoid criminal prosecution in Russia. Polonsky's lawyer Diana Tatosova said Polonsky's request to issue him an Israeli passport had nothing to do with his avoiding responsibility in Russia.

On June 14, Russian Interior Ministry investigators charged Sergei Polonsky in absentia with fraud in the project to build the Kutuzovskaya Milya residential area. More than 80 citizens were recognized as injured parties. The investigators said the Polonsky-controlled company had received some 5.7 billion rubles from investors but later suspended construction failing to meet the contract terms. The company's administration then initiated bankruptcy proceedings and liquidation.

Earlier Polonsky placed an address to the Interior Ministry's investigation department on Facebook stating that he had no intention to escape. He noted however that he had to stay in Israel. In his view, the charges within the Kutuzovskaya Milya case should be changed from fraud to "theft of money belonging to Polonsky's company by a group of persons."

Fugitive mogul Polonsky allegedly arrested in Cambodia

MOSCOW, November 11 (RAPSI) - Fugitive real estate tycoon Sergei Polonsky, according to preliminary data, has been arrested in Cambodia, lawyer Alexander Karabanov told RAPSI on Monday.

The operation to arrest began tonight. According to Karabanov, it happened because Polonsky has posted the video on Facebook where a Cambodian police official tried to extort $1 million from him.

Polonsky was charged in absentia last July as part of a criminal case involving the embezzlement of over 5.7 billion rubles (over $176 million) from the participants in an up-market cooperative residential construction project in central Moscow.
