OUSTED EGYPT LEADER IN GLASS-ENCASED CAGE AT TRIAL
Jan 28,`14 -- Egypt's toppled President Mohammed Morsi stood inside a glass-encased metal cage Tuesday, separated from other defendants for the start of a new trial Tuesday over charges from prison breaks during the country's 2011 revolution, state television reported.

Egypt's state news agency MENA reported that Morsi flew by helicopter from Borg al-Arab prison in Alexandria. Only 19 other of the 129 defendants in the case, including the leader of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood group and other leading figures, are held by authorities. The rest, including members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Lebanon's Hezbollah, are on the run.

Egypt's state television broadcast exclusively from the courtroom. Its reporter said Morsi appeared in a separate cage from the other defendants in the case. He said defendants turned their back to the court, a form of protest of their prosecution. The case is rooted in the 2011 escape of more than 20,000 inmates from Egyptian prisons - including Morsi and other Brotherhood members, during the early days of the 18-day uprising against ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

Authorities accuse Morsi and the other defendants of plotting to "destroy the Egyptian state and its institutions," conspiring with the foreign groups who infiltrated to Egypt through Gaza and using the turmoil during the uprising to organize the prison breaks. The prosecutors said more than 800 foreign fighters entered Egypt through Gaza to take part in storming of three prisons and killed a number of police officers and inmates. A Brotherhood lawyer has said the trial appears aimed at "denigrating" Morsi and the Brotherhood.

It is Morsi's second court appearance since Egypt's popularly backed July 3 military coup. He missed a Jan. 8 hearing in another trial after security officials said bad weather grounded a helicopter meant to bring him. The hearing is at a police academy complex in eastern Cairo, where a heavy security presence stood guard Tuesday. State television showed briefly showed live footage from inside the courtroom before the trial started. Morsi is facing three other trials on different charges as well. Only one of those trials, where he is accused of inciting murder of his opponents while in office, has begun. Many of the charges he faces carry the death sentence.

Morsi Trial Suspended in Cairo, Defense Walks Out of Court
February 16, 2014

The trail of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi and 35 others was suspended Sunday, shortly after the session began.

Defense lawyers walked out of court to protest the soundproof glass cage in which Morsi and the others were placed. It is not clear if the lawyers have quit the case or when the trial will resume.

Egyptian court sentences Mohammed Morsi to 25 years in prison
June 18, 2016 An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced six people, including two Al-Jazeera employees, to death for allegedly passing documents related to national security to Qatar and the Doha-based TV network during the rule of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.

Morsi, the case's top defendant, and two of his aides were also sentenced to 25 years in prison. Morsi and his secretary, Amin el-Sirafy, received an additional 15-year sentence for a lesser crime. El-Sirafy's daughter, Karima, was also sentenced to 15 years in prison. Morsi was ousted by the military in July 2013 and has already been sentenced to death in another case. That death sentence and another two life and 20 years in prison are under appeal. All of Saturday's verdicts can be appealed. The two Al-Jazeera employees identified by the judge as news producer Alaa Omar Mohammed and news editor Ibrahim Mohammed Hilal were sentenced in absentia along with Asmaa al-Khateib, who worked for Rasd, a media network widely suspected of links to Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood was banned and declared a terrorist group after Morsi's ouster. The three other defendants sentenced to death Saturday are documentary producer Ahmed Afify, EgyptAir cabin crew member Mohammed Keilany and academic Ahmed Ismail. Egypt's relations with Qatar have been fraught with tension since the ouster of Morsi, who enjoyed the support of the tiny but wealthy Gulf state. Cairo also maintains that Al-Jazeera's news coverage of Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East is biased in favor of militant Islamic groups.

Last year, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi pardoned two imprisoned journalists from the Al-Jazeera English news network. Mohamed Fahmy, an Egyptian-born Canadian, and Egyptian Baher Mohamed were arrested in December 2013. They were sentenced last year to three years in prison for airing what a court described as "false news" and coverage biased in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood. The prosecution of the two, along with Australian Peter Greste deported in February last year drew strong international condemnations. Their long-running trial was entangled from the start with the wider political enmity between Egypt and Qatar following Morsi's ouster.

The sentence was for a conviction arising from the killings of protesters during demonstrations in 2012. It is the first of Morsi's four convictions to reach the end of the judicial process, and he cannot appeal further against it.

Twenty-year jail sentences were also confirmed against other senior figures from the then-ruling Muslim Brotherhood, including Mohamed el-Beltagy and Essam el-Erian. The men were convicted in April 2015 on charges including kidnapping, torture and the killings of protesters during unrest in 2012.

The Islamist Morsi became Egypt's first freely elected president in June 2012. An army takeover stripped Morsi of power in 2013 following mass protests against his rule. Hundreds of Islamists have since been killed and thousands arrested.

Death sentence of Egyptian ex-President Mohamed Morsi overturned
Nov. 15, 2016 -- Egypt's Court of Cassation on Monday overturned the death sentence of former President Mohamed Morsi, who now faces a new trial linked to the Arab Spring uprising that rocked the country in 2011.

The court reversed a lower court's ruling from June 2015 to sentence Morsi to death for his involvement in jailbreaks and mass protests during uprisings in 2011 that removed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Morsi was democratically elected president in 2012, then overthrown the following year by a military coup. His party, the pan-Arab Muslim Brotherhood, was outlawed, and thousands of supporters were arrested. In the ruling Tuesday, five of Morsi's co-defendants will be retried, and 21 more had their life sentences struck down.

Although Morsi was spared the death sentence by Egypt's highest court Tuesday, he remain jailed, sentenced to 45 years on other charges, including espionage on behalf of other countries. He also awaits additional trials on terrorism and other spying-related charges. In October the Court of Cassation upheld a 20-year sentence for Morsi for inciting violence.

Egypt has seen regular incidents of protest and political violence since 2011. The activist organization Human Rights Watch has referred to the current administration of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi as a "human rights crisis" in which dissenters against the government routinely have their rights violated.

Egyptian court overturns Mohammed Morsi life sentence and orders retrial
Wednesday 23rd November, 2016 - An Egyptian court has struck out a life sentence and ordered the retrial of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi on charges of conspiring with foreign militant groups, including the Palestinian Hamas which runs the Gaza Strip.

The decision by the Court of Cassation in Cairo came nearly 17 months after the initial sentence against Morsi, who hails from the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood. Last week, the same court overturned a death sentence against Morsi in a separate case, linked to a prison break during the 2011 uprising against Egypt's long-time autocrat and Morsi's predecessor, Hosni Mubarak.

The court on Tuesday also threw out life sentences for 16 other jailed Brotherhood members, including the group's spiritual leader Mohammed Badei. The court also overturned death sentences against powerful Brotherhood figure Khairyat el-Shater and 15 others, most of whom were tried in absentia. No new date has been set for the retrial. For the prison break, Morsi had received the only death sentence so far.

Last month, a court upheld a 20-year sentence for Morsi on charges arising from the killing of protesters in December 2012. It was the first final verdict against Morsi, whose rule proved divisive and who was ousted by the military in 2013 after a year in office. Since his removal, Morsi has been in solidarity confinement and has faced several court cases on different charges.

The court rulings come at a time when Egyptian authorities, after banning and declaring the Brotherhood a terrorist organisation, continue to crack down on the group's supporters and finances. On Monday, a justice ministry committee ordered the confiscation of assets of more than 45 Brotherhood leaders and supporters.
