Horrific homophobic murder of gay man in South Africa

A young gay man has been brutally tortured and killed in a horror hate murder in the Western Cape.

The Son daily Afrikaans newspaper reported that 23-year-old David Olyne from Ceres was killed over the weekend while a group of teens blithely watched on.

Senior Reporter Maahir Pretorius told Mambaonline that his investigation had led him to seven individuals between the ages of 14 and 16 and one of 18 years who apparently witnessed Olyne’s nightmarish death.

On Saturday evening, the youths from the Belle Vista neighbourhood were drinking near a local dam when they were invited by a man to watch how he was “going to kill a moffie [(*)(*)(*)].” (slang for homosexual)

They arrived on the scene where they found the victim already covered in blood and tied up with wire.

The teens were urged to watch as the alleged attacker bashed Olyne on the head with a brick and jumped on his face while shouting in Afrikaans, “voetsek” ["(*)(*)(*)(*) off"].

Throughout the ordeal, Olyne only made groaning noises, said the teenagers. The alleged killer then placed branches around the victim and set him on fire.

Shockingly, the young witnesses wandered off without telling anyone about the incident. They returned to the scene the next morning to see if Olyne was still alive.

Only then did they inform a woman about the lifeless and half-naked burnt body. She in turn called the police.

When there are still horrific attacks like this going on in the world, with a man beaten and burned to death just because the attacker thought he was gay, I think the issue of bigotry towards homosexuals is still very relevant.

This is a terrible death. This is obviously extremely rare as you had to go to Africa to find a single case of this. Did you know that there were 2,123 Christians killed for their faith in Syria alone last year? Do you feel the same way about the bigotry towards Christians?

I actually do feel the same way towards about bigotry towards Christians- I was however reporting a current event.

I think all deaths are tragic, and murders tend towards horrific, and those who are killed because of their religion, or skin color, or sexual identity deserve to be recognized.

 

There's really nothing else to say except that it is just awful.

What a horrific crime.......violence in SA is worse than here, with over 3000 Boer farmers being slaughtered in the last few years. SA will go the way of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe in the next few years. I feel sorry for the Whites that can't get out before SA descends into chaos

There are, on average, over 50 murders per hour globally with many of them being exceedingly horrific, but everyone should be outraged over this particular one because you say so?

 

I'm pretty sure that the worst mass murderer in the US, Timothy McVeigh, was straight.

I'm pretty sure that Seung-Hui Cho and Adam Lanza were straight, too. Just a hunch.

As the US becomes more gay friendly it seems the rest of the world is becoming more hostile toward gays. You would think the US would influence the world on the view of such things. No one has to agree with or accept homosexuality but this type of awful violence should be condemned by everyone.

Cho was raised as a Christian. Relevant? As relevant as trying to paint homosexuals as murderers

27 killed - December 14, 2012 - Sandy Hook Elementary School - Newtown, Connecticut. Adam Lanza, 20, guns down 20 children, ages 6 and 7, and six adults, school staff and faculty, before turning the gun on himself. Investigating police later find Nancy Lanza, Adam's mother, dead from a gunshot wound. The final count is 28 dead, including the shooter.

Adam Lanza was reported to have been raised as a Catholic.
