It's an agreement that gives Hollywood and the US pharmaceutical, tobacco and other industries unlimited rights over the countries that are stupid enough to agree with it.

The essence of it is that their sovereignty to make laws limiting the activities of US companies is denied in return for who knows what? If, for example, a country wants plain-packaged cigarettes, Phillip Morris could sue for restraint of trade.

It's a typically American sovereignty play.

Fortunately, the US congress doesn't like it either. And the Japanese are being awkward.

But the basic idea is, of course, to encircle China. Who has not been invited into this absurd club.

I think it is a good thing for some and a bad thing for some. However, it is a net good overall.

I see you are a Tea Party enthusiast. I guess that would explain the "good" bit?

The TPPA is a lame attempt to inflict American rubbish values on the rest of the Pacific nations. A naked grab for power designed to set China off balance. While US farmers continue to demand and get subsidies to produce nothing, the US wants to ensure that overseas produce does not get into the American market. But that its corporates get to screw with the sovereignty of independent countries.

This is odd. I would have thought Americans would be vast in their exultation of this new incarnation of American imperialism.

Not that it bothers me. Europe is not on the Pacific rim. So we escape this particular American haemorroid.

You obviously don't know much about TPP and who is supporting it.

What difference does it make who supports the Tea Party? It's like judging the Democrats because criminals support them. It only matters when they appoint these people to office, the way the junta in Kiev did with the Nazis.

You really don't even have a clue. The TPPA was originally an agreement in 2005 between Brunei, Chile, New Zealand, and Singapore. That the US only later joined in 2011. And its a trade agreement. All its term are applied equally on all members.

Partly maybe, but the ultimate goal is to continue the ascension of corporations as tyrant rulers of the world.

Is there somewhere we can read this agreement so we know what it actually is?

The fact that you call it a "thingy" and have apparently just now found out about it should be enough for you to know that it's dangerous.

If I understand, all but the original 4 are in negotiations.

I would like to know why corporations are in on the negotiations. They aren't political representatives. Of course, I believe we all know the answer to that.

But what I'm saying is, where can people actually see the verbiage so we can know. As far as I know, even the congress (the ONLY ones authorized to actually enter treaties) don't even have a transcript.

Negotiating the future of the United States behind closed doors, hidden from not just the people but even their representatives, is an APPALLING abuse of democracy. Government for "we the people", who are out of the loop and have the least amount of say.

If you've been following the news about it, it thankfully looks by the day it's looking more and more unlikely that it's going to happen at least for the next few years. Asian countries are growing wary of the US' laughably absurd demands and some have even opted to cancel treaties which allow "investor-state tribunals" (e.g. illegal courts where national regulations are gutted by corporate lawyers), which is a huge part of TPP. The agreement belongs in the incinerator as do the people writing it.

You would think by the stereo types given to the Republican party that it would be them who is behind TPP. But you'd be wrong. Our transparent administration is deeply involved in TPP trade negotiations taking place behind closed doors.

Who said corporations are in on the negotiations? Im sure the politicians get input from the corporations since the agreements deal with international trade carried out almost exclusively by corporations.

They havent yet determined its final form. And Obamas version of transparency.

Nonsense. It simply requires protection of intellectual property rights, patents, trademarks etc. It takes away countries law making powers regarding such rights. Malaysia cant allow their Companies to manufacture fake NIKE Air Jordans even if those with the law making power wish to do so. Those with law making power would need to first withdraw from the treaty and then enact laws to allow the manufacture of fake Air Jordans. So it ony slightly delays there law making power until they withdraw from the treaty.

The Obama administration is trying to keep it hidden from the public which was never done with any of the other trade agreements and all of those were abominable, complete with the "lock in" function for neoliberal reforms. The TPP has a "lock in" function but it also includes the United States, unlike with the others.

More of a clue than you do, it seems.

The Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), which is duite different, has not even been negotiated yet. And it is not what is normally considered to be a free trade agreement.

Trade is only a minor part of the agreement. That’s just a clever branding exercise. A TPPA would be an agreement that guarantees special rights to foreign investors. If these negotiations succeed they will create a mega-treaty across 9 countries that will put a straight jacket around what policies and laws thir governments can adopt for the next century – think GM labelling, foreign investment laws, price of medicines, regulating dodgy finance firms, local content on TV …

The corporation is kept in the loops. Of course they give input like you just said. Congress doesn't get to give input nor do the people. The people via representative are who decides how far corporations go, NOT the other way around. Unless you admit this is a plutocracy over a democracy. Plus, it cherrypicks which countries get to influence and which do not, which is more direct, big government manipulation in the markets. How is that fair to their competitors, whose interests will be neglected if not attacked by the hand picked crony companies? We won't know what it consequences it will have, till after it passes. And it won't just affect business, it affects the people.

And of course, lack of transparency is featured as Obama's hallmark.

Not sure of your point. The fact that they've changed the name of the agreement over the years is irrelevant. And it only restricts their policies regarding trade with other parties to the agreement, ONLY as long as they chose to be a party to the agreement. NOT 100 years. Any party is free to withdraw from the agreement.

Congress gives its input when they vote to ratify the treaty or reject it.

Nonsense. All the terms of the agreements apply to all the parties to the agreements.
