I'll reason here a little. Stalingrad has much more cultural and political significance than Volgograd. It would probably help as far as tourism and cultural investment go.

There was no such placeas Hitlercity. Stalingrad is a real name of a real city. People of Volgograd should decide how they want their city being named.

I'm not surprised. Putin seems to be taking a leaf out of Stalin's book - he's spending disproportionate amounts on revamping the military, he has a relentless propaganda machine and he's an authoritarian megalomaniac. I hope they're very happy in their relationship.

(laughs) Do not tell me. Tukhachevsky - hero. Very funny. Tukhachevsky incompetent military leader. During the Civil War stood extreme cruelty. Furthermore, Tukhachevsky had attempted a coup. Was shot. By a court. To his death, Stalin has no relation.

It has more propaganda value as Stalingrad. This is about whipping up the people to get them ready for a fight. Consider that Russia is training 70,000 troops around the Arctic.

Like I said, the Russians worship Stalin.

what would Russia say if Germany renamed Berlin "Hitlerberg"?

Not "Putingrad"? I thought he had a bigger ego.

Regarding Stalin, he was bloody and deadly dictator for his own people. The only reason why history doesn't treat him like Hitler ... it's that he won the war against the Nazi with the allies. This made him gain a certain "privacy" ...

First, Putin does not want to rename Volgograd by his power. He just suggests to make a referendum-if people agree, they will rename the city. I do not mind if Volgograd would be renamed. Much more history behind Stalingrad, then behind Volgograd. By the way how the renaming of the city is related to Gulag?

Nothing like renaming it to glorify war, which is basically the point. It is not who votes, but who counts the votes that matters.

Why people can not decide about the name of their city? It is not the business of anyone outside of Russia. There were no such cities as Goerinberg and Hitlerberg, so this example is not relevant here.

You are not Russian, so you do not know what name Stalingrad means to Russian people. It is not the point to glorify war. And as I mentioned before, rename or not to rename Russian cities -it is not hell the business of anyone who is not Russian- it is purely internal thing of Russian Federation.

We are talking here about Volgograd-Stalingrad, not about Ukraine. You question is out of the topic.

I think that Stalin was a strong leader of the country. If instead of him, there was Trozkii, or someone else, not sure about the outcome of the Great Patriotic War.
I respect him that he indeed took Russia on when they only had a wooden plough and he left it with nuclear weapons. Great industrial development.
But of course, I don not like him for how he valued life of people, for GULAG, etc.

So what? Stalingrad has much more cultural signifigance and recognition than Volgorad does. If they want to rename the city, I don't really care.

This is more about nationalism and drumming up support for Putin's aggression against other countries.

It´s not question about Stalinism, but about the russian heroism in one of most important battle in the history... Stalingrad is the name of the battle... so, why not? Everybody knows Austerlitz but nobody knows Slavkov u Brna, right?
