Was this thread resurrected just as something to do? Nothing new here. For once, Col. K is right. Those weapons are expired. What's in those casings now can be found in any cesspool.

ISIS is not comprised of morons, they are rather intelligent.

Never underestimate your enemy, it will inevitably lead to your downfall.

"Expired" does not mean "harmless". It simply means they are not as effective, not that they are useless.

Most insecticides are based upon chemical weapons (specifically nerve agents), and have a shelf life of around 3-5 years. Tell you what, let's get some 25 year old insecitcide and spray it in your face, and see if it is no longer harmless.

Fact is, chemical agents keep their potency for decades if not centuries. The biggest problem with the dry agents is simply that they clump and do not disperse as far. For liquid agents, seperation means that they are not as effective, but by no means "safe". About the only weapon that does indeed degrade over time and can become largely (nor completely) safe are the biological agents.

But even that is not assured. Many biological agents (anthrax in particular) can go dormant in the form of spores for decades, only to resume replication once exposed to the proper conditions.

But but but the Bush haters said that mustard gas and sarin gas that was discovered in Iraq in 2003 and 2004 don't count as being a WMD's.

So why would anyone be concerned if ISIS ends up with mustard gas or sarin gas ?

The actual headline reads; Iraq tells U.N. 'terrorist groups' seized former chemical weapons depot, it's a "depot", that means "storage facility" not a manufacturing plant and it says absolutely nothing about Saddam in the article.

Moreover, why didn't the US destroy this facility and it's supposed cache of weapons when they controlled Iraq? Something smells here.

Actually, feel free to look through Wikileaks. Thousands of Top Secret documents about the discovery of such caches were released there.

And the US did not even find all of it. As late as 2009, the Iraqi Government itself was disclosing more recent bunkers as part of their joining the International Chemical Weapons Convention. And the way the Saddam government was hiding them all around the country, I would not be surprised if there were still others that were missed.

Then again, not that chemical weapons are all that difficult to make. I can make a time delay chlorine gas weapon with a 15 minute trip to the local grocery store for less then $50. Many of the more sophisticated ones require no more sophistication then it takes to make fertilizer.

Why didn't the MSM report this ?

That's right, the liberals had politicized the war in Iraq and decided not to look like asses they claimed that mustard gas and sarin gas are no longer WMD's so they don't count.

The problem is that these are stupid simple to make.

    How simple?

Take a lage 1 gallon glass jar and fill it with chlorine.
Take a 1 Quart glass jar and fill it with amonia.

Place the amonia jar inside the chlorine jar. Throw the jar against any hard object, with enough force to break both jars.

    Boom, chlorine gas weapon.

Made with knowledge I learned in Junior High School Chemistry Class.

It didn't count as WMD because it wasn't ENOUGH. Weapons of MASS destruction have to capable of destroying....uh....masses

Nobody is really concerned if ISIS gets a LITTLE mustard gas, or Sarin, but if they get a LOT, that will be problematic. However, AFAIK Sarin is not very easy to make and Mustard gas is not that effective, re the article.

I also think that any areas where they might be about to make them will be pretty much targets of the American, French and Russian Air Forces and whatever ground forces are there now, or coming later.

Old and degraded does not mean harmless.

Essentially, degraded chemical weapons are still highly concentrated chemical waste. Death from exposure would happen in hours and days instead of minutes, but you wouls still be just as dead.

Are you aware of how deadly these items are?

In the aftermath of 3002, over 5,000 weapons with both mustard and sarin were recovered. And this is not counting the 2 bunkers that were turned over by Iraq to join the CWC. And sarin is one of the deadliest chemical weapons in common use, only a few drops is enough to prove fatal.

And sarin is amazingly easy to make. In 1994 the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo was able to make sarin in homes with basic materials and equipment, with no specialized training. They were able to make almost pure sarin, which killed 21 people and injured thousands.

As for Mustard Gas, also stupidly simple. Basically mixing ethylene with sulfur monochloride, which results in a mustard gas that is rougly 75% pure. Basic distilling refines it to rougly 95% purity.

And mustard is damned effective. It is estimated that rougly 100,000 were killed or injured due to mustard gas in WWI. However, to a modern military with proper equipment and training it is actually not that deadly. That however is of no help to the civilians, who would die in horrible numbers.

And mustard gas really does not degrade. Primarily it clumps and cakes together, and it's capability to disperse is seriously degraded. Simple removing, redistilling and repackaging is all that is needed to restore this to full capability.

Oh, and the 550 tons of yellowcake. This would be stupidly simple to make into a radiological weapon.

US to Temporarily Hold Captured ISIS Leaders for Interrogation
Mar 11, 2016 | The U.S. has no intention of setting up a permanent site for the detention and interrogation of terror suspects in Iraq and will only hold them for periods loosely defined as "short term," a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad said Friday. "Fourteen to 30 days is a ballpark figure, but even that is not really completely nailed down," said Col. Steve Warren, a spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve. "There isn't a hard definition of short-term."

ISIS continues to disgust the world and push the boundaries of what it is to be a mindless barbarian. It's no surprise they have gotten hold of these weapons, much of Saddam's former army are in high positions in ISIS, many of whom were Sunni Muslims. ISIS' technological capabilities are seemingly starting to surpass that of many similar terror organisations.
