The Syrian Arab Army prepares to take over the terrorist-held parts of Aleppo in a major storm that will be the sign of the Syrian victory over the international complot. The SAA, the Republican Guard and some Hezbollah-linked fighters are moving in.

Thousands of Syrians Flee Aleppo Countryside
October 20, 2015 Thousands of Syrian villagers are fleeing homes in the countryside south of Aleppo in the face of a government ground assault backed by Russian airstrikes, one of four major offensives mounted since Russias military intervention in the long-running Syrian civil war. The three other offensives are focused mainly on rural areas in the provinces of Homs, Hama and Latakia.

Three weeks into the Russian air campaign, no ground assault has been launched by government forces in major rebel-held urban areas. Militia commanders say they suspect the strategy of the government of President Bashar al-Assad is focused on stretching the rebels, seizing control of key highways and encircling larger insurgent-held towns in northern Syria. In the countryside south of Aleppo U.N. officials estimate about 35,000 villagers are on the move, escaping relentless and often indiscriminate Russian bombing raids around the villages of Khan, Tuman and al-Hader.

Villages empty

Zaidoun al-Zoabi, head of the Union of Syrian Medical Relief Organizations, estimates the numbers of fleeing villagers are higher. In an interview with the BBC, he said several villages he had visited in Aleppos countryside were empty. We saw only people who do not have even tents, any shelter, whatever. People were asking for some food, sandwiches even. There is no medical support, al-Zoabi said. He estimates the number of displaced at about 70,000 people. The shelling is so fierce. The sky was filled with jet fighters, with helicopters, and people are terribly scared. They are scared to death, he added.

Some government gains

Government forces, backed by foreign Shi'ite militiamen, remain stalled with their offensives in Hama and Homs, partly thanks to a U.S. resupply of anti-tank TOW missiles, rebels say. But the offensive in the Aleppo countryside that started Friday is seeing some early government gains. The ground offensive around Aleppo is believed to have been planned by General Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force, the elite branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, who reportedly traveled earlier this month from Latakia with Russian military commanders to al-Safira to plot the early phases of the offensive.

October 20, 2015 - Russia's airstrikes in Syria have killed nearly 400 people, nearly a third of them civilians, since the campaign began three weeks ago, activist groups said Tuesday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria, said hundreds of Russian airstrikes over the past three weeks have killed 370 people, including 243 rebel fighters from Islamic State as well as al-Qaida's Syrian affiliate, the Nusra Front, and 127 civilians. The strikes also wounded scores, making it one of the deadliest assault's since Moscow joined the conflict September 30. Russia has said it is targeting the Islamic State group and other "terrorists," but Syrian rebels and their supporters accuse Moscow of targeting moderate and Islamist rebels in a bid to bolster the Assad regime. Since the airstrikes began, Syrian troops and their allies from Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group also have launched ground offensives in northern, central and southern Syria as well as the in the suburbs of the capital, Damascus.

Supported by the airstrikes, the ground troops have been able to capture areas formerly held by insurgents. Jabal al-Akrad is close to the rebel-held northwestern province of Idlib, which has been targeted by Russian warplanes. Syria's conflict, now in its fourth year, has killed more than 250,000 people, wounded a million and displaced half the country's population.

US Envoy: Regime Actions in Aleppo Should Revolt UN; The War Only Ends When Assad Goes
May 4, 2016 U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power told the U.N. Security Council Wednesday the world body should be revolted and galvanized by the fact that a U.N. member state was responsible for the fact that Aleppo, once Syrias largest city, is burning.

The party primarily responsible for Aleppo burning is a U.N. member state. That should revolt us, she said. The party responsible is a U.N. member state indifferent, cold to the ghastly suffering of its people. That should galvanize and unite us. Power said the only way the war would end would be a political transition away from [President Bashar] Assad, and that the U.S. would work with Russia to facilitate that. More than four-and-a-half years after first calling on Assad to step down, the administration is doubling down on its view that he must go if peace is to be achieved in Syria.

Assads Russian ally continues to dispute that his departure will have that result, pointing to the examples of Libya and Iraq. Power called on the regimes supporters, especially Russia and Iran, to press it to meet its obligations to honor a negotiated truce or cessation of hostilities. The U.S. says the regime has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in the Aleppo area over the past two weeks. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights more than 270 civilians have been killed as a result. Secretary of State John Kerry said the U.S. and Russia had reached agreement on an urgent effort aimed at getting the truce in Aleppo back on track, although the regimes army said the agreement would only hold for 48 hours.

A day earlier, Kerry also reiterated the administrations determination that Assad must go. He told reporters at the State Department that August 1 was the target date for a political transition in Syria a transition based on the 2012 Geneva communique, which calls for a transitional governing body, to be formed on the basis of mutual consent between regime and rebel representatives. We said that the target date for the transition to is the 1st of August. So were now coming up to May, he said. So either something happens in these next few months or they are asking for a very different track.

Kerry said if Assad thought he could carve out a section of Syria in the Aleppo area, the war would not end. It is simply physically impossible for Assad to just carve out an area and pretend that hes somehow going to make it safe while the underlying issues are unresolved in this war, he said. And as long as Assad is there, the opposition is not going to stop fighting him, one way or the other. He said the U.S. was not alone in that assessment, adding that other parties involved in the diplomacy including Europeans, Gulf states and Turkey have all said you cant end this as long as Assad continues, because Assad cannot reunite the country. Its that simple. Kerry also warned about unspecified repercussions if Assad does not observe the agreed-upon truce. If Assad does not adhere to this, there will clearly be repercussions, and one of them may be the total destruction of the ceasefire and they go back to war, he said. There may be even other repercussions that are being discussed, but that is for the future to determine.

August 8, 2016 • Syrian regime forces and rebel factions sent hundreds of reinforcements to Aleppo on Monday as both sides braced for a crucial battle to control the country's second city.

Fighting for Syria's former economic powerhouse is intensifying after an opposition advance at the weekend broke through a three-week government siege of the city's rebel-held east, dealing a major setback to regime troops. Rebel forces on Sunday announced a bid to capture all of Aleppo city, which if successful would mark the biggest opposition victory yet in Syria's five-year civil war. But forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are putting up a fierce fight and have begun pouring reinforcements into the city.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, said some 2,000 pro-regime fighters from Syria, Iraq, Iran and Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah had arrived in Aleppo since late Sunday. "Both sides are amassing their fighters in preparation for the great battle of Aleppo," said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Britain-based Observatory.

The Monday edition of Al-Watan, a Syrian daily close to the government, reported that the army had received "the necessary military reinforcements to launch the battle to retake the areas from which it withdrew." It said a military operation by Syria's armed forces was "imminent... and inevitable." Aleppo has been roughly divided between government forces in the west and rebel groups in the east since fighting first broke out there in mid-2012.

Aug. 18, 2016 -- The United Nations suspended the work of its humanitarian aid task force in Syria amid ongoing airstrikes, including one that injured a 5-year-old boy who has become the most recent face of the country's bloody civil war.

The announcement from Staffan de Mistura, the U.N.'s special envoy for Syria, comes hours after a military strike on rebel-held Qaterji. He cut short a humanitarian aid meeting Thursday after just eight minutes, saying it made "no sense" to continue plans for aid when humanitarian workers are not allowed in the devastated areas. He said convoys have not been able to reach areas most in need. "I decided to use my privilege as chair to declare that there was no sense to have a humanitarian meeting today unless we got some action on the humanitarian side in Syria," De Mistura said. "What we are hearing and seeing is only fighting, offensives, counteroffensives, rockets, barrel bombs, mortars, hellfire cannons, napalm, chlorine, snipers, airstrikes, suicide bombers."

De Mistura again called for a 48-hour halt in gunfire to allow for deliveries of aid that includes medications, food and water. He said the task force is suspended until next week in the hopes of bringing together the United States and Russia. "I insist, on behalf of the U.N. secretary general, to have a 48-hour pause in Aleppo," he said. "That would require some heavy lifting not only by the two co-chairs [Russia and the United States] but also those who have influence on the ground."

In the most recent strike on Wednesday night, rescue workers scrambled to free the injured from a collapsed apartment building, including 5-year-old Omran Daqneesh, his three siblings and their parents. A video, shot by photojournalist Mahmoud Raglan for the Aleppo Media Center, showed Omran being carried in to an ambulance and sitting quietly, wiping his hand on his face and looking at the blood. Omran and his family were treated at a local hospital and released. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three people died in the attack. The video of Omran has since gone viral and is reminiscent of the image of 3-year-old Alan Kurdi, a Syrian boy who was found dead on a Turkish beach and became a symbol of the migrant crisis.

The Alawites are a branch of Shia Islam, and unlike other Muslims they were always tolerant of other faiths. Some believe they might have been Christians who were forced to convert. They do drink alcohol, and celebrate both Christian and Muslim feast days. Their main characteristic is that they affirm the superiority of faith over ritual.

On the 8th of May, the Qatar station Al Jazeera broadcast a debate on why it's necessary to kill and torture all Alawites. It's very interesting.

Syrian army and allies regain southern Aleppo district: monitor
Sep 08 2016 - Syria's army and its allies have regained an important Aleppo district lost to rebels last month, state media and a war monitor said on Thursday, and were pressing an offensive south of the city to further squeeze the insurgents.

If sustained, the advance in Ramousah would reverse nearly all gains rebels made in a push last month, tighten a blockade over rebel-held eastern Aleppo and ease access for the army into government-held western districts through the city's south. A second line of attack, aimed at villages south of Aleppo and supported by what a pro-government fighter called "dusk to dawn" bombardment, is intended to isolate Telat al-Eis, a hill captured by rebels in May that commands fire over the region. However, a rebel source said insurgents still held part of Ramousah and that though the army was mobilizing forces, the Jaish al-Fatah coalition of Islamist groups was still present at the southern Aleppo front.

The battle for Aleppo has become the focus both for President Bashar al-Assad, backed by Shi'ite militias from Iraq and Lebanon, Iran's Revolutionary Guards, and Russian air power, and for the Sunni rebels seeking to overthrow him. As international concern has mounted, the United Nations has renewed a call for weekly 48-hour humanitarian ceasefires to allow aid into the city, but efforts by Russia and the United States to agree terms for a truce are dragging. On Thursday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry discussed by phone potential cooperation to facilitate aid deliveries. Syria's five-year war has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced 11 million, half of Syria's pre-war population, while drawing in world and regional powers, inspiring jihadist attacks across the world and sparking an international refugee crisis.
