At the same time China was invited into Pearl Harbor and has been participating in Rim of the Pacific exercises for the first time, it's also had a spy ship parked off Hawaii, U.S. Pacific Fleet confirmed Friday. The People's Liberation Army Navy auxiliary general intelligence ship has been operating within the United States' 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone around Hawaii but not within the 12-nautical-mile territorial seas, said Capt. Darryn James, spokesman for U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.

China is seeking to elevate its status as a maritime power with its participation in RIMPAC, and as such, the exercise carries symbolic as well as practical significance. Brad Glosserman, executive director of the Pacific Forum Center for Strategic and International Studies in Honolulu, said he understands China's desire to gather intelligence during RIMPAC.

But doing so and being outed for it while China is a first-time invited guest is a public relations blunder.

China sent four ships to participate in RIMPAC -- the missile destroyer Haikou, missile frigate Yueyang, supply ship Qiandaohu and hospital ship Peace Ark -- representing the largest ship contingent after the United States.

"Now we learn they chose to disrespect the 20 other international participants by sailing an intelligence-gathering ship directly into the middle of the exercise," Forbes said. "It is clear that China is not ready to be a responsible partner and that their first trip to RIMPAC should probably be their last.".....snip~

Now why would we just send an Email to the Chinese? Which they never bothered to answer. Does this sound like the best way to get China's Attention.....with an Email? What say ye?

I think US intelligence feels very smug about this. What the Chinese are seeing is where they can *hope* to be in 20~30 years, if they continue to do things right, and the whole thing holds together for that long. In the present scenario, all they can tell their leaders back at home is "we have no business promoting conflict with the US".

We already have problems with them Hacking into our Country.....sending out such a ship. They should know we would have picked up on any sophisticated equipment. Especially anything used for Spying.

Still they did run it Right outside our Territorial Waters and close up on Hawaii.

Is isn't like we do not spy on people. International waters are international waters. No harm/no foul.

Mornin' Smevins. [IMG] Yeah we already said they were legal in international waters. What was questionable is running the ship up with the Rimpac exercises.

Like we are not gathering intelligence on the other ships in the exercise. These are silly symbolic endeavors to begin with. Even mentioning the EEZ in this context is an attempt to make it look like China is doing something wrong/is exploiting a technicality. As long as their spy boat isn't fishing off the waters of Hawaii, the mention of the economic zone shouldn't even be in the article.

We learn more about them than they do about us in these dog and pony shows. We will never worry much about their capabilities, as their 'command' is always going to be political appointees connected to the 'right' Party people, and are rarely promoted on actual merit, much like their 'business partners' they provide for companies that want to take advantage of their labor racketeering and lack of environmental laws. The biggest security threat to the U.S. comes from these multi-national corporations that transfer technology to them, while the U.S. government subsidizes the research and then ships the advantages off-shore. Until those multi-nationals are reigned in, the Chinese will continue to get advances in electronics and other tech handed to them on a platter by CEO's and shareholders who only care about stuffing their pockets and could care less about the long term dangers they're supporting.

Well with Russia buzzin up the Coast and their planes......playin a lil top gun lately. You know how the MS Media likes to pick this sort of news up. Now its China that has a ship near the US. Before they were reporting what the Iranians were saying and how they were coming to check things out. Then they change their minds.

China's behavior has become increasingly more aggresive and bold. They are acting threatening towards Vietnam and Japan, while increasing ties with the increasingly anti-EU and US Russia with the signing of 200-300 billion US dollar gas bill. We have idealogical differences with China as well.

A Pentagon report has suggested China will assume an increasingly anti-US stance as they grow, and that there may become a "cold war" sort to say between the great superpowers. Their economy is expected to surpass us by 2020, and their military is increasing rapidly, and the real rate is said to be lower than what it actually is. China India, and the US by 2050 will be equals according to a similar report, with the US "first among equals" (US bias?)

We spy on China I'm sure too, but I'll let you in on a secret. One of my friends worked for the US army, as a computer technician, and he dealt with Chinese attacks on US government and military websites. Given that there's a two hour limit on how long a Chinese citizen can use a computer daily, it is very likely it is their government. Yet we keep it on the low, for our own agenda, or that of the governments.
