What is the largest threat to US homeland security?

We are exposed to multiple threats, but which is the most significant?

Yes, in the USA we have criminal hoodlums such as Michael Brown... but we are also being flooded by drug dealing Latinos, Muslims plotting against us and Blacks bringing Ebola into the USA when they return from their villages.

 

AG Eric Holder stays up night worried about conservative terrorists. The DHS said conservative veterans were a terrorist threat. The police are getting machine guns and armored cars. The federal government is taking over law enforcement.

Who do you think is the greatest threat?

 

The possibility that a nuke can be smuggled into the US in shipping container. There is currently no way to stop this from happening if an enemy of the US can get a nuke.

This assumes you are talking about external threats. The biggest threat domestically is that our government is becoming totally disfunctional and I believe this is only going to get worse no matter what party is in control

 

Apathy. Lack of understanding as to how our system of government is designed to work. Short sightedness. Liberal 'spit and bubble gum' fixes. Adoration of political personalities. Allowing a ineffective status quo then fearing to change the status quo. Partisan thinking (resulting in closed minds following party lines, simply because they are party lines)

 

They can try, but it's not that easy, as you say. There are efficient systems of detection of radiations in any Western hub. They have to smuggle a new device, for example I doubt an old soviet device could pass.

 

But, how many suicide bombers could enter with an invitation from the president over our southern border?

 

Probably as many as could over our northern border and coastal shorelines. If suicide bombers want into the U.S., they'll get in one way or another. Best to fear the possibility of potential homegrown suicide bombers. I fear they may be right around the corner.

 

I selected ISIS, but that's really too narrow an answer. Islamic Fundamentalist terrorism is the greatest threat since they seem bent on destroying anything that doesn't fit their narrow world view including other Muslims. If they had WMDs, there is no doubt in my mind they'd use them.

The "high crime Latinos" and African-American threats are definitely overplayed. Anyone who thinks those are serious threats to our nation needs to stop watching "infotainment newz" and get a better grip on reality.

 

I think you are right. The work of brainstorming, not only in US, of our intelligences today is focused on external potential threats [and they are asking to anybody to help in imagining the unimaginable. But what about internal dangers?

After 9/11 and the terror attacks in London and Madrid the Western security systems have improved at a point that the possibility of a great terror attack coming from abroad is little [not to say remote].

The only two known cases of Ebola coming into the United States are medical workers(race unknown- and immaterial) exposed in Africa while fighting Ebola.

How many 'African Americans' do you think go visit 'their villages' in Africa?

That was much more of a possibility 10 years ago. Without going into details, yes there are measures in place to prevent that now, and it would be far more difficult to achieve now than it would have been 10 years ago.

Amen to that. By the end of the next 2 yrs, we won't even recognize this country. Americans will probably be streaming across the border into Mexico seeking a better quality of life.

Many here are confusing what they see on the "Newz" with the reality of living in the US. Anyone who thinks our nation is collapsing needs to step outside of their house or apartment and look around. If you see cars burning in the streets, stores being looted and bullets whizzing by, then I might agree with you, but I'm guessing 99.9% of the members of this forum who live in the US won't see any of those things. What they'll see is nice houses with nice lawns and nice cars in the driveways.

 

If you actually believe that you have been drinking too much of the government cool aid. Why do you think our government is so terrified at the thought that terrorists might get access to nuclear weapons. Terrorists don't have ICBMs but they certainly could smuggle the weapons into the United States with minimal risk. Same basic reason we are so terrified about any WMDs. We can't stop drugs or aliens why would we be able to stop WMDs or nukes.

But, who will pay for all the free stuff? If the flow of 'freebees' dries up the illegals will cease to flow in and your menial labor force will evaporate. You'll be stuck with a country where all the citizens camp out by their mailboxes waiting for a check to show up that was never mailed in the first place, watching the throngs of illegals on their march back over the border in hopes of securing a job in the thriving economy of Mexico. You'll have free medical care but no doctors to administer it, except possibly those folks that man those free clinics, providing they can stop inhaling THC long enough to concentrate on your ailments. Soon then the grass and weeds from your unattended lawns will grow over you because your gardener is in Warez where he got a cushy 9-5 job. You can abort your babies, but you'll need a lawnmower to abort that grass. Maybe then you'll wish you took that pregnancy to term 'cause you could really use the help.

It is a smaller risk than it was 10 years ago. I am not saying that it isn't possible- but the scenario that Tom Clancy painted would be much harder to achieve now then it would have been before.

No one has attacked the US since 2001, 13 years now.

I would venture that the greatest threat to homeland security is the Patriot Act, followed by Barrack Obama.

There is a whole lot of partisan fear mongering, often playing to racists and xenophobes, who want Americans to be scared.

But the reality is that each of us is in more danger of getting killed in a car accident driving to work than from any of those issues.
