Huey P. Newton Gun Club leads open-carry rally in South Dallas

Two dozen protesters — most of them armed — from a gun club named after the founder of the original Black Panther Party peacefully marched through parts of South Dallas on Wednesday.

The open-carry rally was organized by the Huey P. Newton Gun Club to promote self-defense and community policing in response to recent police shootings, both nationally and locally.

Police monitored the black-clad demonstrators, some of whom had rifles slung over their shoulders. As they walked down MLK Boulevard and Malcolm X Boulevard in the blistering heat, many chanted “black power” and “justice for Michael Brown,” the black teenager fatally shot by police this month in suburban St. Louis. His death has touched off a string of often-violent protests in that area.

While the Dallas marchers frequently chanted Brown’s name, they said their main goal was to shed light on local shootings by police. Dallas County leaders recently announced that they are looking into ways to change how they investigate shootings involving police officers.

“We think that all black people have the right to self-defense and self-determination,” said Huey Freeman, a march organizer. “We believe that we can police ourselves and bring security to our own communities.”

Freeman said Wednesday’s marchers planned to patronize several South Dallas businesses to keep their money in the community and teach their neighbors about their “right to self-defense.”

At one point, the group stopped at Elaine’s Kitchen, and one of the organizers told those who were armed to display their weapons in a “safe, disciplined manner.”

Several car drivers passing by the area honked and waved at the protesters.

Established about three months ago, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club calls for an end to shootings by police of unarmed individuals — particularly blacks. It also asks people to consider carrying weapons “to protect themselves,” according to a news release.

“We need to arm ourselves, not to attack anybody, but in self-defense,” said Darrin X, a representative of the New Black Panther Party. “We can’t let people just come into our community, whether they are law enforcement or not, and just gun our people down and there is no accountability.”

It seems as if there's an epidemic of black people being killed by police officers. Stand Your Ground laws are benefiting whites more than blacks. Black people are afraid to call the police. Maybe open carry isn't so bad after all.

I wonder what effect an armed black population will have on gun control. If the black community open-carry with loaded semi-autos, I have a feeling that an AWB will pass the next time around.

With gun advocates praising the many white open-carry demonstrations this past year, I wonder if they'll be as supportive for black people open-carrying.

I doubt I would be welcome there, but an openly armed public has to behave better than that neighborhood historically has. Good for them.

I'd like to see them get with OCT and go on tour all over DFW. It would be a great thing for unity to get together at welcoming restaurants.

Ah, more race baiting. Why wouldn't the NRA welcome anyone interested in their second amendment rights? Gun control was originally racist to begin with.

Anything involving weapons the NRA will support; wouldn't surprise me if they'd support people owning nuclear weapons.

There is an "epidemic" of police killing unarmed citizens, regardless of race. The "epidemic" suggests the rise in numbers each decade.

If you want to Open Carry, great, just abide by the laws in your state and city.

This would make a cooperation between the New Black Panthers and Open Carry Texas a great thing. There are obviously some huge political differences between the 2 groups, but if they could work together on common ground issues things could happen locally or even statewide.

Both groups are seen as fringe extremist groups. They could promote open carry, police transparency, community welfare, and crime prevention as a team, which would unite some people from the left and right to get things done locally. The police would be invited. This would help relations between the police and both groups. The leaders could get together to plan a common agenda.

I don't see it happening, but I might support them if they did. As it is, OCT seems to be doing more harm than good for their cause and I am too pigmentally challenged and too right leaning to be accepted by NBP.

The group had the required permit and were merely exercising their rights to open carry.

Counting the police escort they had, probably the safest few blocks in the state during that march.

WOW!!! The total number of police killings, justified or otherwise is 400 per year in a country of 315,000,000. This is an epidemic?
Open carry citizens are law abiding.....I wonder what your complaint is???

We'll see if the NRA supports this all-black gun club. I'm not holding my breath.

I placed "epidemic" in quotes for a reason. While I do not believe it is an epidemic, stats do support the rise in police shootings of unarmed citizens decade to decade.

YouTube has videos that display the good and bad of Open Carry folks. Some of these OC groups just shoot themselves in the foot, pun intended.

As I said, if you are obeying the laws with regard to Open Carry in your state and city, great.

I imagine the NRA will respond to this march in the same way as they have responded to other similar OC activities of late.

The message this OC group is conveying is that they intend to take up arms against those who are killing innocent people in their communities. They have MY full support in that endeavor. I wish them every success, and hope they focus their efforts on those who are actually doing the killing in those communities. (hint: It's not the cops)

I have extended family members who have served as LEO and am grateful to the boys and girls in blue who step up and serve. I also know that every barrel ( no pun intended here) has a few bad apples that have the means to shoot first and ask questions later.

As far as Open Carry and abiding by the laws, great.

Has the "all-black" gun club asked for NRA support?

Is the NRA racist for not proactively scanning news media looking for all-black gun clubs to publicly support to prove they are not racist?

Has the NAACP supported the all-black gun club? Are they racist for not doing so?

By the way, the "all-black" gun club has a name. It's the Huey P. Newton Gun Club.

If you keep fishing, you may find something yet.

I'm not fishing. I'm just pointing out an observation.

But I'll offer a personal prediction: not only will the NRA never support an urban black gun club, but they will be less inclined to fight another federal AWB.

I have no problem with anyone including an all black gun club exercising their 2A rights. As long as they are legal and safe.
