The World Spewed More Carbon Pollution Into The Air Last Year Than Ever Before

AP | By Seth Borenstein | Huffington Post | Posted: 09/21/2014 1:03 pm EDT
    Excerpts:

WASHINGTON (AP)- "Spurred chiefly by China, the United States and India, the world spewed far more carbon pollution into the air last year than ever before, scientists announced Sunday as world leaders gather to discuss how to reduce heat-trapping gases.

The world pumped an estimated 39.8 billion tons (36.1 billion metric tons)of carbon dioxide into the air last year by burning coal, oil and gas. That is 778 million tons (706 metric tons)or 2.3 percent more than the previous year.

"It's in the wrong direction," said Glen Peters, a Norwegian scientist who was part of the Global Carbon Project international team that tracks and calculates global emissions every year.

Their results were published Sunday in three articles in the peer-reviewed journals Nature Geoscience and Nature Climate Change.

The team projects that emissions of carbon dioxide, the main heat-trapping gas from human activity, are increasing by 2.5 percent this year.

The scientists forecast that emissions will continue to increase, adding that the world in about 30 years will warm by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius)from now. In 2009, world leaders called that level dangerous and pledged not to reach it.

"Time is running short," said Pierre Friedlingstein of the University of Exeter in England, one of the studies' lead authors. "The more we do nothing, the more likely we are to be hitting this wall in 2040-something."

Chris Field, a Carnegie Institution ecologist who heads a U.N. panel on global warming, called the studies "a stark and sobering picture of the steps we need to take to address the challenge of climate change."

More than 100 world leaders will meet Tuesday at the U.N. Climate Summit to discuss how to reverse the emissions trend.

The world's three biggest carbon polluting nations - China, the U.S. and India - all saw their emissions jump. No other country came close in additional emissions.

Indian emissions grew by 5.1 percent, Chinese emissions by 4.2 percent and the U.S. emissions by 2.9 percent, when the extra leap day in 2012 is accounted for.

China, the No. 1 carbon polluter, also had more than half the world's increases over 2012. China's increases are slowing because the Chinese economy isn't growing as fast as it had been, Peters said.

The U.S. had reduced its carbon emissions in four of the five previous years. Peters said it rose last year because of a recovering economy and more coal power.

Only two dozen of the about 200 countries cut their carbon emissions last year, led by mostly European countries. Spain had the biggest decrease.

The world emissions averaged to 6.3 million pounds (2.9 million kilograms)of carbon dioxide put in the air every second."

    ......

IMO: Well, The United States placed third (3)in world pollution last year thanks Big Oil, Coal, and Gas Guys!!....when you take out greed, gluttony, avarice, and stupidity you can readily see that the United States will never willingly give up their reckless pursuits no matter how many Americans die from the effects of pollution and violent weather patterns in a prelude to global warming.

Therefore it is up to our government to pass stringent laws, fines, etc to gently cajole the wayward corporations that disregard the laws they don't like, to finally stay within the laws to run their businesses. It is a well known fact that the poor suffer from global warming emissions because they lack the money to move to better climates, so they are the first people to die because of industrial pollution.

    ......

...and the seas keep rising, more violent storms, mudslides, droughts, floods, fires...all preludes to global warming.

Do you know the difference between weather and climate?

And progs are sooooooo concerned about the poor they propose jacking up their energy prices.

As for "violent weather patterns", we haven't seen a hurricane in these parts in years. What is the absence of these violent weather patterns a prelude to? More Warmer hot air? :)

And yet no warming. Gosh, this wasn't supposed to happen. Arctic sea ice is 1.2 million square kilometers below average. Antarctic Sea ice is 1.7 million above average.

Oh MY looks like a big fat lie about the U.S. emissions!

Our 2012 emissions "were 10 percent below 2005 levels." China and India may be going up but ours is coming down. Go talk to them. Better yet send the author of the OP's article to China and have 'em walk right in to the Presidential Office Building and demand to see the President, then demand he cut CO2 emissions. :roflol:

Who would like to explain why a 2 degree change is going to actually be bad?

    I will start.

    It won't.

When global warming occurs it produces climate change, the key word here being CHANGE. Not worse, not better, just changing.

This means that deserts may see more rain and very wet places may dry up. Tornado alley may move to the East Coast while our hurricanes shoot up through the Gulf more often then from the East. Places that are miserable to live in now will get decidedly better while places like Palm
Springs and San Diego will probably get worse.

So what exactly is going to be the problem?

have you even viewed information about China and its levels of pollution? It might appear that they are responsible for most of the modern day pollution.

Wait till they get the new updated info on methane. I am hoping for predictions of the end of the world withing 10 years. :D I found one of those sensors happens to be on the way to school. So every day I eat something hot and spicy like a buffalo wrap or a burrito and then after classes I stop and bend over with my ass pointed at the sensor and fart right into it.

The problem is the trillions of dollars that kind of adjustment is going to cost our economy. And it's not quite the balanced adjustment you make it out to be. If the poles melt the sea level will rise to the point where we will lose our states that are close to or below sea level. Like Florida and Louisiana. It'll be devastating to our south east and gulf coast line.

    - - - Updated - - -

That's what the scientists are saying. Or should we listen to MolonLabe2009 over the scientific community?

Until the left wing moron parade gets 100% behind Modern Nuclear Power (Pro-Tip: Base load Energy with ZERO emissions).... they can shut the hell up.

There is no other possible base load energy source viable for at least a decade.

But, instead, Liberals are closing brand new plants like STP 3&4, and fighting Vogtle, and closing San Onofre 2&3 (brand new retrofit).... Liberals just want a cause so they can take power and control. They don't want a solution.

Solar and Wind are nothing but a joke at this time with the ability to produce less than 2% of the base load required. Does anyone know why Japan's economy just took an enormous dump? Because they shut down all their nuclear plants. At the same time they increased their emissions by 1000%+.

    Idiocy.

This is pure lies and hysteria. You actually believe this propaganda? or do you just repeat it mindlessly?

The seas are not rising, there are LESS violent storms, blah... blah... blah.... you are posting absolute garbage.
