Or possibly the fact that Bergdahl was actually held prisoner rather than wandering around Lebanon for nine years or so? He was arrested there in 2005 by Lebanese cops.
That he was "held captive" is still under investigation. That he unlawfully walked away from his place of duty in a combat zone is not yet proven but clearly the case if those serving with him are to be believed. Split hairs all you want. There is still a great disparity here.
If the investigation is taking this long, perhaps Bergdahl is telling the truth. Surely if the evidence were as damning as the evidence against Hassoun, Bergdahl would have been charged already. Hassoun went on leave to Utah and never came back. He was arrested the following year by Lebanese cops, but Lebanon declined to extradite him. He is clearly a deserter.
