US sphere of influence - "shagreen". Honore de Balzac was very accurately described the effects of greedy desires.

As a US citizen, I can tell you that losing Turkey as an "ally" is for the best. I'd like to distance ourselves from ALL middle eastern nations except Israel. We need to do MORE oil business with Canada and less with the Saudi princes.

Yes Turkey has changed, gone from a secular country to a more embrancing sharia law country. Hopefully they'll feel the same way about the EU.

This is a wishful thinking. Actually, we have been friends with Turkey for 60 years and it was very helpful during cold war era. Now, everyone knows, the cold war ended and Turkey dos not need us any more. In this game, Israel is rather a drag then help. Israel holds us hostage. USA and Canada need friendly relationships with Asia to maintain peace in the world.

Turkey and the USA are members of NATO.

that means that we are obliged to protect one another, and see an attack on one as an attack on all.

Devotoglu who is now PM and was Erdogan's policy maker wrote a book called Strategic Depth, which basically says Turkey should expand into all their former Ottoman territories. It was these territorial ambitions which made people vote for Erdogan, and up until now he hasn't been able to show them anything. When he tried to grab a chunk of Syria it was hindered by Assad when he removed his troops from the area bordering Turkey and unleashed the Kurds on him.

To keep the Syrian Kurds separated from the Kurds in Turkey, Erdogan began sending in jihadists to fight them. Up until now Turkey has been helping ISIS, and the kidnapping of the people in the Turkish consulate was a ruse so that Turkey wouldn't have to comply with the sanctions and was able to buy oil from ISIL. I knew it was from the start, and later on it was stated by one of Erdogan's opposition in Parliament. He said they were all in Turkey safe and sound.

More recently I read that CNN showed a map of a future Kurdistan with a chunk of Turkey which freaked out Erdogan. Also three MIT agents (Turkish Intelligence) were killed together with the ISIL fighters in Kobani. Turkey is also upset that the US will not back them in drilling in Cypriot waters, as well as supporting them in their ambitions towards the Aegean...and we can go on and on and on. :wall:
