With the first one, if you really got into the "place to live" aspect and all the wants and problems around that, it might strike a chord with some of the illegals and refugees and their issues. With the second one, if the crooked sheriff actually had a heart of gold and secretly helped the heroine and won her instead of the gunslinger doing so, that would be an interesting twist. Who is that famous jailer right now that all the conservatives like? Maybe you could get some ideas from pieces on him.
