British Muslims protest in London against Charlie Hebdo cartoons

LONDON (Reuters) - At least 1,000 British Muslims protested in central London on Sunday against what they called "insulting depictions" of the Prophet Mohammad by French newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

The crowds gathered near Prime Minister David Cameron's office in London's Whitehall government district carrying placards with slogans such as "Stand Up For the Prophet."

The event comes weeks after 17 people were killed in three days of violence last month in France that began when two Islamist gunmen burst into Charlie Hebdo's Paris offices, opening fire in revenge for its publication of satirical images of Mohammad.

Sunday's protest organizers condemned the Paris attacks, but said the magazine should not publish cartoons of the prophet.

Imams delivered speeches and the crowds paused to pray before handing in an online petition to Cameron's office signed by over 100,000 Muslims.

The petition, organized by a group called Muslim Action Forum, denounced those who had produced cartoons of the prophet, calling them "an affront to the norms of civilized society".

A leaflet circulated by the event's organizers said depictions of Mohammad by Charlie Hebdo and others was "a stark reminder" that freedom of speech was "regularly utilized to insult personalities that others consider sacred".

A group of around 10 far-right protesters looked on but the protest passed off peacefully.

Taking advantage of the right to free speech in Britain to protest against free speech.

    Muslims don't do irony.

If certain people got their way, there wouldn't be freedom of speech or expression...

They are free to express their opinions. Just so long as they don't t try and tell us to amend the licensing laws.

Charlie Hebdo had the right to publish those cartoons, Muslims who feel angered by it have the right to protest about it. Period. Free speech has to be absolute across the board, we should repeal all anti "hate speech" laws otherwise we're being hypocrites.

One can only protest so much though before one needs to take action. Charlie he do protagonists were warned and they continued with their offensive and racially charged publications. Racially charged in the sense that it targeted Muslims explicitly. The publication was even know to fire those who dared insult Jewish ppl yet it allowed the derogatory depictions of Arabs. It is the same as the Dutch and their derogatory depictions on Africans in their traditional takes on let's take the mickeys out of those we are bombing

So let them. You can say that you disagree with what another person says, and still believe in free speech. Anyone can swear, but if you call your girlfriend some bad names, she's going to leave you. Your right to speech means you have to tolerate theirs, but it doesn't mean you can't say anything back.

They have the right to protest but it is ironic that they use free speech to try and shut down free speech.

punishment? murder is not punishment, but the act of extremist thugs who will go to Hell.

if there is a God, he did not sanction these murders, but he did sanction the killing OF the murderers by the police.

It would depend on the contents of the petition. If it was for the government to do so, then yes. If not, then no freedom of speech irony.

Your line of reasoning is faulty. The only responsibility that comes with any right is the responsibility that it does not damage other rights. There is no right to be protected from offensive language. You argue that it is OK to 'take action' even if it results in the damage of others rights so it is OK to oppress rights.

if one is truly secure in their faith, they don't feel the need to lash out with violence when someone insults their faith.

everyone has the right to say stupid things.

no one has the right to kill someone because their feelings were hurt.

Freedom of Speech includes saying stupid, mean, and offensive things.

anyone who would kill someone, for saying something that offended their beliefs, is a childish murdering fool who deserves Hell.

Charlie Hebdo insults Jews all the time.

in fact, Charlie Hebdo shows depictions of God, which is a violation of Jewish law.

but you don't see Jews committing massacres, now do you?

something about Islam, makes these folks very insecure about their beliefs, so they feel to lash out with violence.

its not about religion being made fun of. It's about derogatory images being published of Arabs as well as blacks in European traditions and when you have been told it is offensive yet you still do it then cry when something happens, it's like the bully crying and going to the headmaster when the kid knocks him out
