Congress Just Launched Its First Strike Against Women and LGBT People Under the Guise of Defending Religious Liberty. - The U.S. House of Representatives is working hard to legitimize discrimination against gay and transgender people and women. And it's using religious liberty as its smokescreen. That's why leaders in movements for LGBT equality, reproductive freedom, and freedom of religion and belief are standing shoulder-to-shoulder in a new effort to oppose any move, at the state or federal level, to use religion to discriminate, including a measure approved by a House committee last night.

A committee of the US House of Representatives decided that employees in the District of Columbia could be fired for using in vitro fertilization to start a family or for becoming pregnant while unmarried. That's right, people of D.C.: members of Congress just voted to let your boss fire you for personal decisions you make at the doctor's office — because your boss believes those decisions aren't consistent with his religious beliefs. Now, the whole House may take a vote on this discriminatory measure.

At the same time, a separate measure introduced in the House would block the Human Rights Amendment Act, another D.C. bill that would ensure that LGBT student groups at religiously affiliated schools and universities have access to the same facilities and resources as their peers. And similar measures on both bills are still pending in the Senate. Our greatest threat to American freedom and liberty is not the faux overseas extremists, but the religious right, here at home. It diametrically looks so hypocritical, if not evil, to see Christian groups so "hell bent" on integrating the religion of their so-called god, on a secular government. While this bill only effects DC, if it sticks, the religious right will spread it like a cancer, throughout the U.S.

Thank the real God (whom or whatever he/she/it is) for organizations like the ACLU who will stand up to dogmatically influenced legislation. It should be pointed out that not all Christians are like the religious right and they still believe in the patriotic values of the separation of church and state.

Yes, this statement is hyperbolic but it is my sentiment.

Funny how progressives don't produce the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing bill but rather give a regurgitated summary..

    I forgot - progressives don't read legislation.

A tired subject. Republicans have in no way launched an attack against women as liberals continually insinuate. Some, not all Republicans are against same sex marriage. I personally could care less who wants to marry who. What difference does it make in the long run? No difference. But stop the generalizations, there are many Democrats that don't support same sex marriage as their are Republicans and their reasons for doing so are mainly related to Religion.
