Freddie Gray Protest Leads To Clashes With Baltimore Police

The Huffington Post | By Simon McCormack | Posted: 04/26/2015 12:59 am EDT
    Excerpts:

"Protesters and police clashed in Baltimore amid growing tension over the unexplained death of Freddie Gray, who died after suffering a fatal spinal injury while in police custody on April 19. While most of the thousands protesting the death of Gray were peaceful, some demonstrators began to destroy property and confront law enforcement who were out en masse to ensure that all were safe.

Late Saturday night, Baltimore police said they had made at least 15 arrests. Fox Baltimore's Larry Collins said two police officers were injured during the demonstrations, along with at least two other people according to an Associated Press report. Five, if not more police cars were damaged, CNN reported. Baltimore's mayor and police commissioner denounced those who introduced violence and destruction into the protests."

    ......

"Most of the problems were near Camden Yards, Baltimore's ballpark. Tweets from the scene show a protester smashing the back window of a police vehicle and police in riot gear chasing protesters, and on occasion engaging in scuffles with protesters. Camden Yards, where the Baltimore Orioles were playing the Boston Red Sox, was placed on lock down due to the protests surrounding the stadium.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said that sometime after 6 p.m. EDT, a more violent group of protesters advanced at officers near Camden Yards, but residents stepped in to keep the peace, according to Fox Baltimore. "Residents put themselves in between police officers and this agitated crowd and asked for calm and asked for peace," Batts said, "which was very good to see." Spectators trapped inside the ballpark were later allowed to leave."

    .......

IMO: An extraordinary thing happened with the thousands of protesters - when things started to get physical, the peaceful protesters put themselves in between the police and the agitated crow and asked for calm and peace. The usual scenario is breaking cops' cars windows, looting, rushing the police that sets off more violence, and the officers retaliating and setting off even more violence.

What is needed is a mayor, police chief, or some government person to step up and come to the site of the protest and explain to the people how it all happened and what is being done, and letting the people ask questions and vent in a more constructive way. Blacks are showing their pain in the way young blacks are treated by the police in the only way they know how, and they should be allowed to voice their pain, anger, and whatever other feelings they have concerning how blacks are treated while in police custody.

Until blacks in police custody are treated with more respect, these deaths, injuries, and law suits will continue until the police change their attitude toward the blacks showing that the police bear grudges themselves that leads to bad treatment that sometimes ends in death - and if not death, a growing hatred for the police. It becomes a war with only one side being armed for war, in which the blacks will invariably lose.

Do we have to wait until every black is hardened , cynical, and devoid of hope until we realize that a crowd of riot-dressed, armed police in military Humvees descending upon a scene releasing tear gas on the crowd is not the answer?

People blame rioters 100% for this, but police killing this man in custody are to blame for the riots too.
Rioters are criminals that use these kind of opportunities to commit crimes. Police killing American civilians will cause protests which are the opportunities rioters are waiting for. Add poverty and discrimination and you got hell.

The desire to "shut down the city" (as some have stated as their objective) is entirely incompatible with the desire to win hearts and minds. But these "protestors"--one uses the word very loosely here--are not at all interested in winning hearts and minds. Rather, they want a sort of mini-revolution.

Ahhh, what is your evidence that conclusively proves the police killed the man?

Call out the National Guard, put a dusk to dawn curfew with orders shoot to kill any rioters or looters.

Time to put a stop to these animals.

I agree with you, but then again I think it would just make the situation a lot worse on a national level. Just read that news headline "Riots in US City of Balitmore result in gunning down of hundreds." It wouldn't matter if people were rioting, the police, which many are already mad at, are shooting
    and killing people.

Think a better solution would be to advocate for gun rights and help citizens come to terms with an armed world. It's done in Iraq, one gun per family. It's clear the government cannot stop mob mentality on this level, only way to stop one mob is another mob. Not a united anti-black or anti-anything mob, but the general agreement of law-abiding citizens: "If you loot my store, if you physically attack me to threaten my life, I will shoot."

Cops need to begin confiscating EBT cards. It'll shut down real quick once a few examples like that are made.

    Confiscate their EBT cards. :roflol:

You might be right, what brought an end to the riots in L.A. (Rodney King riots) back on April 29th, 1992 was May 1st, the first of the month when the welfare checks and food stamps came out for the rioters, looters and arsonist.

What's today's date ? April 27th. Four more days to go.

Most blacks are already hardened, cynical, and devoid of hope. You see that is actually the real problem here. This is nothing more than a society experiencing a chain reaction of having mostly white, wealthy, powerful control over a country and its opportunities for minorities. Minorities have known this for decades. The police department is really just one entity in our society that is being used to keep the minority population institutionalized in their own neighborhoods. There are many other forms of control being used, but a police department acting almost like a military style organization against the people, is the first line of defense from preventing minorities from getting ahead. By the way, this is all by design. We have a predominantly black population that has essentially been institutionalized in their own country either in housing projects or prisons, and that is as far as society wants to see them go. THAT IS REALLY THE PROBLEM. Blaming the police is the smokescreen that is used instead of addressing the "REAL" problem, which has never been addressed. And that is a problem of inclusion. Minorities understand this perfectly. The white, rich, power machine is preventing opportunity to open itself up to the majority black population. Again, that is the "REAL" problem here. Until that is addressed, nothing is going to change. And quite frankly, even though we all know this, the white, rich, power machine knows this, they will still not lift a finger to correct the problem. Like I said before, since minorities were slaves and brought to this country, until today, while they are still slaves in another way, this has been the strategy, totally by design, from day one.

This is the kind of stuff that the Ferguson rioters were doing in the middle of the night. These guys are going to make Ferguson look like a peaceful protest.

    1. Respect? Why in hell should criminals be the first ones to get respect? What about respect for the people they hurt? What about respect for the community they infest? What about respect for the law? What about respect for the people who have to step in and clean up their criminality? Why don't you go lecture them about respect?

    2. Its growing because liberal overlords know they can mentally abuse the Black population with this campaign of manipulation and herd them like human cattle to the voting booths.

    3. I guess this sheds some light on why when liberals talk about gun grabbing they never mention guns owned by criminals, you don't even think they have them.

    4. Well your damn right about that. If you get the race war you're helping to start you'll lose it. That's a fact you can bet on.

If your right I would expect the police to respond in kind. There was an old premise that every president wanted their own war. Obama now has his.

Obama flys all over hell. He should fly to Baltimore and confront the rioters!!! Where is Jackson and Al Sharpton???

Any whites watching the evening news will become more racist. Riots like this only serve to create more racism.

I assume all these fine upstanding black citizens took a vacation day from work today in order to riot?

Want to put an end to this (*)(*)(*)(*) once and for all? Threaten to stop sending welfare checks.

This is war against the police. How's that going?

There's going to be an economic price as people and businesses that survive are going to be moving away from these hot zones.
