As a fan of the original series I could not be more excited for the new Mad Max movie opening tomorrow. It currently has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the highest I've ever seen for a major release with the possible exception of the original Lord of the Rings movies. From the buzz I've seen so far, this looks to be a masterpiece in the action genre. Great to see George Miller not missing a step after a long 3 decades away from the series. This one looks to be most similar to the 2nd movie in the franchise, the Road Warrior, which is by far the best one (in my opinion).

I'm hoping Gibson makes an appearance somewhere in the film, but everyone is denying it so far. I'm hoping it will be an unexpected surprise. I'm not a huge fan of Tom Hardy, but looks like a good choice for this role. If anything, it will bring in the Batman kiddies and help with the box office take. I know people personally who have never seen the original series but plan on seeing this one simply because they like Tom Hardy.

What I REALLY think is cool is that the bad guy in the new movie is the same actor that played "Toecutter" in the original film, way back in 1979. A very nice touch of nostalgia, and he looks way more creepy now than he did then.

Go see it! Support R rated action movies. Enough of this superhero PG-13 kid-friendly garbage (I still like the Marvel movies, relax).

Conservatives are already calling it feminist propaganda.

Hopefully it's not. We don't need a movie about Max Rockatansky playing backseat to a butched out Charlize Theron simply to make some left-wing viewers more comfortable. Masculinity isn't a bad thing, despite what Hollywood may think.

I'm worried though, they always seem to butcher a retelling of a classic one way or another.

Anything that means more screentime for Charlize Theron is okay by me. Conservatives objecting to heroines instead of heroes is just one more way that conservatives are bollocks IMO. Women have been action heroes since Athena

Doesn't seem likely based on everything I've read so far. The same mastermind behind the original trilogy is making this one, and the same guy playing the villain. I think it's going to be good.

The feminism talk is based on reaction to the trailer. The group complaining hasn't seen the movie yet.

I would hope "Mad Max" focuses on - Max. That's how the original films were, that is how this one should be. If a strong masculine character in an action movie isn't your thing, maybe this isn't the franchise for you. I hear "G.I Jane" is good if that's what you are looking for.

I just saw it. Charlize Theron basically slaps Max around and makes him her (*)(*)(*)(*)(*).

Well I've been reading more into it and I must say, this is extremely disappointing.

If they wanted to make a movie involving a tough female character fighting back against her white male oppressors, they could have done that. Nobody would have gone and seen it. But they had to co-opt the Mad Max franchise and create a trailer that looks like the best parts of Road Warrior to trick people into coming and seeing the movie. Now I know why the trailer was very shy about revealing the main premise. A lot of old school action fans would resist the obvious left-wing preaching going on.

Will probably end up seeing it as a rental or on Netflix. Not going to support the box office on this one.

I guess it's just wrong to have a strong white male heterosexual character in today's Hollywood climate. Females and minorities have to take the lead, with whites becoming bumbling sidekicks.

At one point in the movie, they perform a late-term abortion. Not even joking.

I don't know, just can't shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen. Maybe I just don't like all the hype.

Here's a great post I read on IMDB:

I think the bolded portion sums it up nicely. Mad Max has always been a strong, independent, alpha male character in the series, so the left would gain tremendous satisfaction from turning his film franchise into a cause in social justice. We need young male viewers to view the women in the movie as the strong central characters, not Max. His character is too masculine.

"Ain't we a pair, Raggedy Man"

I dunno what movies you watched but I didn't see anything even remotely resembling female shy shrinking violets in any of them. Aunty Entity beat Max like a red headed stepchild and the only way Max survived was the only way he always does, by being Max

99 rotten tomatoes is deserved because the Max movies are just about perfect storytelling, They make no compromises as to either characterization or action. The conservative naysayers are just embarrassing themselves by injecting politics here. They're so shallow they can only understand macho stereotypes and get upset if an action movie has actual real people in the main roles. Newsflash fellas, women wear pants nowadays and some of them actually drive cars and everything. >>>MOD EDIT Flamebait Removed<<<

It appears that the movie is injecting politics. It's not really any different from Elysium and other left-wing propaganda pieces.

Extremely high ratings are usually a bad sign. A bunch of left-wing film critics praising a film because of its left-wing agenda, but I was hopeful that it was simply due to this being a really good movie, like the Lord of the Rings movies were. It's too bad.

Toecutter died in the 1st movie, so his character isn't back. The actor who played him is.

George Miller, the same guy who did the first 3 movies, but he's not in the movie. I don't think any other actors are returning unless Gibson makes a cameo (and I doubt he does, I would have seen it by now in the posts I've been reading).

I think maybe you see what you want to, and you're getting a little obsessed with politics. Try running for office, that's guaranteed to break the addiction

It probably wasn't his decision. I'm sure he would have liked to be involved in some way. He was supposed to be the star of this movie about 10 years ago but Miller didn't want to go forward due to Gibson's non-PC comments being made at the time. Maybe he still feels that way.

She's gotta be a socialist to be with Sean Penn.

You do realise that Mad Max is not a Hollywood franchise, right? It's Australian.
