Exclusive: China warns U.S. surveillance plane

Above the South China Sea (CNN)The Chinese navy issued warnings eight times as a U.S. surveillance plane on Wednesday swooped over islands that Beijing is using to extend its zone of influence. The series of man-made islands and the massive Chinese military build-up on them have alarmed the Pentagon, which is carrying out the surveillance flights in order to make clear the U.S. does not recognize China's territorial claims. The militarized islands have also alarmed America's regional allies.

A CNN team was given exclusive access to join in the surveillance flights over the contested waters, which the Pentagon allowed for the first time in order to raise awareness about the challenge posed by the islands and the growing U.S. response. CNN was aboard the P8-A Poseidon, America's most advanced surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, and quickly learned that the Chinese are themselves displeased by the U.S. pushback.

"This is the Chinese navy ... This is the Chinese navy ... Please go away ... to avoid misunderstanding," a voice in English crackled through the radio of the aircraft in which CNN was present.

The spratly islands are claimed by at least 5 nations, China is clearly committed exerting its influence in the region. IIRC there are large oil deposits nearby.

I also think they know Obama is a weak POTUS, and that this is the time to establish a presence in the region.

I like the idea of the Chinese humiliating Obama. Anything that discredits him is ok.

Thats a pretty simplistic view-but then again I think Obama's "red lines" haven't discredited anyone but himself.

The thing about being a leader-your actions matter.

Funny you're not asking how dare the chinese build military base off the coast of the Philipine way outside of their territorial waters... But then again you're a Brit and respect for others border isn't part of your morality.

Yes. Nothing starts wars quicker than weak, vacilliating leadership. The people who cheer this kind of thing the Chinese are doing on are morons.

    Why CNN ???

    So Obama uses CNN. :roflol:

A competent President would have gone with Fox News Channel if he wanted raise the awareness what the chi-coms are up to and that Obama is on the ball on what's going on in the South China Sea. Not to be confused with golf balls.

Maybe Obama is just trying to reach out to those in his base who are still banging their heads against the wall for giving him a second chance in 2012 ?

The chi-coms are playing chess on the geopolitical chess board while Obama continues to play checkers with CNN. :roflol:

The real story here is the P-8 Poseidon, the Navy's ASW aircraft that is the replacement for the very successful P-3 Orion. You know how it works, it has to be obsolete and if it's new, it has to be better.

Obama and his supporters are the real enemy, not anyone overseas. Foreigners who humiliate Obama and his supporters are doing good work.

    Rome vs the State Qin.

the Chinese had allways a huge armed force but they allways performed badly, against Mongols, Japanese, Mandschurs... even the Viatnamese (*)(*)(*)(*)ed them in the 70s after they ousted Pol Pot who was allied with China.

A dose of reality for the keyboard warriors with and without tshirts...

" ...Earlier this month, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter asked for options for sending U.S. aircraft and ships within 12 nautical miles of the construction. In a May 13 testimony before Congress, Assistant Secretary of Defense David Shear said that the United States planned to station surveillance aircraft and long-range bombers in Australia. (He later claimed to have misspoken, after pushback from Australia.) Rear Admiral Harry Harris, Pacific Fleet Commander, plans to station three additional vessels within patrol range of the Spratly Islands — the archipelago that includes the reefs — to respond to Chinese activity there.

This approach is misguided. Neither Carter, Shear, nor PACFLEET Commander Harris appear to be taking seriously the potential for a violent response from the Chinese. The risk in pushing China too far is great, as China has demonstrated on multiple occasions, when U.S. actions led to dangerous confrontations.

American military planners’ real concern is that the Chinese will use the newly constructed islands — which certainly include a runway large enough to handle military aircraft, and may include facilities to dock military vessels — to extend the scope of their Anti-Access Area Denial (A2AD) strategy. Military installations in the South China Sea would provide platforms for land, air and sea-launched weapon systems sufficient to raise the cost of U.S. military actions in the region to prohibitive levels.... Obama does seem to like to sit on his hands to these emerging issues. They should have started a US backed Philippine land reclamation project there by now if Obama was actually interested in the job he is getting paid for.... instead they just wait till it gets to big a mess to ignore and shovel it to the next Pres.
